May 20, 2009 - Another quiz night

So I was supposed to work on the Outreach program today, but was unable to because my supervisors were busy picking up new volunteers. I went by my Hospital and picked up my phone from my co-worker (which I'm pretty sure was either his or his brother's old phone because it had a bunch on numbers in it...not complaining though because it works great and has a long battery life) I later went to a seamstress to get some awesome shorts and a bag made for about 5 cedi. At around 6:30 my roommate and i left the house because the power was out,...

May 19, 2009 - A day of just sitting around...

So I didn't do much today. Went to work and saw a few patients. I realized that the patient list is so small, the therapist knows them all by name. He doesn't even ask them what their name is when he pulls out their cards! I asked the massage therapist where I could get a cheap phone, and he told me his brother would sell me one for 35 cedi, so I told him I'd bring him the money the next day. After work I went home, had lunch, and read in my room for a little while with my roommate Amary. At around 3pm a few of the volunteers from a nearby...

May 18, 2009 - Another day at the internet cafe (that rhymes)

So I'm here at the internet cafe, and the power is out at my place once again. I went to work today from 8 to 12ish which was pretty good. Had a few patients in the morning, most of them were stroke victims who lost motion in half of their body...sad but they're improving. I find that the treatment here is very primitive, and if they would just incorporate a few new techniques they would get faster results. I might try and teach them a few of the things I've learned when I volunteered back at Shands. Anyways, it's another hot day and it...

May 17, 2009 - Boti Falls

Today I woke up in the morning and went to Boti falls. It's this little place that has a beautiful water fall. I'm trying to upload pictures, but it's very slow... T.I.A Anyways, I came home expecting to have power again, but to my surprise (not), the power was still out. I was hoping to call cristina for her b-day and was very angry when I couldn't. Almost as angry as I was sleeping in the ridiculous heat without a fan... Luckily i woke up at about 2:30 am in a puddle of sweat and noticed the power was back! I managed to turn my fan on and...

May 16, 2009 - Accra

So today I went with a bunch of Volunteers to Accra, the capital of Ghana. It's alot more crowded and hectic, I'm actually very glad I didn't get placed there. Where I live is ALOT more peaceful. Anyways, we went to the Accra mall... I know I'm supposed to be avoiding places like this, but some volunteers needed to get some stuff, and we were actually sucked into watching the movie Angels and Demons! haha crazy So after the movie this really nice lady decided to walk us to the tro stations and actually paid for all of our rides! It was...

May 15, 2009 - My day in the internet cafe!

So it's today for me... I'm here at the internet cafe called Bella Vista. It's a cedi per hour of use. I went to work at 8 and actually had a few patients. Their clinic is very basic. Diagnose the issue, heat it up with something (usually infrared) and then massage it. They also do a few exercises in what they would call a gym (it has like 3 machines...) On an exciting note, I was told there was a cuban doctor here, so I went to meet him. He works at the same hospital just in a different department. He seemed really cool, his name was...

May 14, 2009 - First day volunteering

So i was picked up and taken to my placement. I work at the memorial hospital which I can walk to. I met Aben and charles the physical therapist. It was really realllllly slow on thursday because the power was out... which apparently happens all the time. When i got home I ate lunch and went to Koforidua again with my roomates and other volunteers. Thursdays is the bead market, so i bought some beads. (lame I know..) I got home feeling disgusting with all the sweat a dirt, so I took a bucket shower. Yeah they actually have plumbing but...

May 13, 2009 - My first day in Africa

So I arrived in Africa safe and sound. Upon my arrival I was greeted by Nyame, a guy that works for Projects Abroad. He went with me to the office in Accra and I was later picked up by Henry. Henry works near where I will be living, and he took me to Mampong via Taxi and Tro Tro. The tros are pretty much comparable to the crappy taxi Cristina, Gaby, Papa, and I took in Tortola. It's actually very green here... but its really hot. After dropping my stuff off at my house, Henry took me to exchange money in Koforidua and showed me where the...
