May 28, 2020 - Plaza San Sebastian Lunch

I have been walking for exercise in front of my house using my cane. Then in the last two weeks I've managed to meet friends in the park for food and drink. Today we went to Plaza San Sebastian and ordered food from the sushi place. Owner Raymond Huntley delivered our lunch to our bench in the park. Rebecca brought a bottle of vino from home and 2 cups. Friday we'll meet at Fabiano's where we can sit outside and reconnect with the Friday happy hour crowd. Osaka Ramen Coronel Talbot #8-26 Parque San Sebastian...

May 22, 2020 - The Living Room Flood

This morning as workers were doing roof repairs above my apartment, their power washing caused the living room ceiling to flood. The rug, loveseat and ottoman, white drapes and lampshade, and a recessed ceiling fixture were dripping with black water from years of dirt on the roof. What a mess. I had a cleaning service come to pick up the damaged furnishings and hope things will be back to normal next week.

May 19, 2020 - Visit to Parque de La Madre

Today I met Jennie and Martha for lunch. I took a taxi to Parque de La Madre to meet Jennie who was waiting with cold cans of Pilsener. We tried to sit under the Jefferson Perez statue but ended up getting shagged out of the park by the police since it is off-limits during the quarantine. We ordered Indian food from Paradise Restaurant and Francis our waiter offered us seats on the patio while we waited for our carryout orders. Sitting in a park and dining outdoors seems to be the new way to meet friends and avoid close quarters.

May 18, 2020 - First Day Out

I walked a total of 3 blocks today with Martha Mays. It is so strange to be on the street for the first time after my recuperation and see every person wearing a mask. Vendors walk around selling cloth masks. All of the taxis are equipped with dividers separating the passengers in the backseat with the drivers in masks and gloves. I'm sorry to report that there are also many beggars on the street asking for money. It was a short and tiring walk around the block.

Apr 10, 2020 - Lockdown Cuenca One Month Later

Cuenca has a daily curfew with no one allowed on the streets from 2 PM to 5 AM. Wearing a mask is mandatory when outdoors. The city is a ghost town with few vehicles on the road. Only designated license plate numbers are allowed on various days of the week with no cars allowed on the road on Sundays. My days are filled with reading, knitting, watching Netflix, and defrosting meals from all the generous frozen dishes that friends have brought for me. In addition, three days a week the physical therapist, Angelica Maria Mangano, is here...

Apr 3, 2020 - Happy 73rd Birthday

We're still on coronavirus quarantine with a 2 PM curfew in Cuenca. Bruce Nyenhuis, also celebrating his April 3rd birthday, visited today with his wife Sharon. I roped Bruce into helping me with a skein of yarn. Now I can knit while I'm housebound. This has been a mild, not wild 73rd birthday. Birthday Limerick: Regina's birthday was spent in quarantine. To celebrate she wasn't too keen. When asked what she wanted, She answered, "No comment, Or anything but Covid-19."

Mar 25, 2020 - Progress Report

I'm well taken care of as I recuperate. Friends spend the night and make sure I can get to the facilities on my walker. An old cow bell from my mother's farm in Southern Indiana has come in handy. If no one wakes up when I call them in the night, I just ring that bell. With the lockdown and curfew during the corona virus pandemic, I'm content to be housebound with books and visitors to keep me company. Spoiler Alert: graphic photos

Mar 10, 2020 - Here We Go Again Left Hip Replacement

I went to see my orthopedist Dr. Santiago Romo a while ago for a 6-month checkup. My right hip has healed well but the doctor saw a suspicious line in the socket of the left hip. A CT scan showed that the socket was fractured. This of course led to scheduling surgery to repair the fracture and replace the left prosthesis which is over 12 years old. Today is the day. I'm back in the same hospital room at Clinica de Fracturas. An acetabular fracture is a break in the socket portion of the "ball-and-socket" hip joint. These hip socket...

Feb 25, 2020 - Carnaval at Common Grounds

I started the day before Ash Wednesday with a visit to CEDAP Museum for the Carnaval exhibit. There were masks and costumes representing Mardi Gras traditions in Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. The holiday seems to be celebrated in similar ways in each country. Fat Tuesday marks the last day before the solemn lenten season begins in anticipation of Easter 40 days later. The Oldies But Goodies Dance this month was held at Common Grounds Restaurant to celebrate Fat Tuesday. We used whatever costumes we could put together along with Mardi Gras...

Feb 15, 2020 - Valentine's Day Benefit

Tonight was the annual fundraiser for Frank Angelo, the son of our favorite waiter Frank Gonzalez. We have been raising money for the last couple of years to ensure that Frank Angelo gets the best medical treatment available. Tonight's dance performance by TRUPE from the University of Cuenca entertained a large crowd and introduced my young friends Franchesca and Fiorella to modern dance. It was a very contempoary show to be sure.

Feb 14, 2020 - Cuenca Dining Club

Every month Janet Engelhard and Stephen Reiss host a tasting event with a different menu. Tonight Stephen prepared food from Suriname. Along with sparkling cava, we enjoyed a different cuisine and met new friends. www.wikitravel.org: Suriname, formerly the colony of Dutch Guiana, is a country in northern South America. It has a North Atlantic Ocean coastline in the north and is surrounded by French Guiana to the east, Brazil to the south and Guyana to the west. It is the smallest independent country on the South American continent. The...

Feb 9, 2020 - Ace of Hearts Magic by Juan Estrella

I invited Fiorella and Franchesca to a magic show to benefit Hearts of Gold, a local charity. Juan Estrella, a very capable magician, amazed us with tricks using ropes, cards, and undetectable feats of sleight of hand. Hearts of Gold partners with small nonprofit organizations and their community leaders in the Azuay province of Ecuador that serve marginalized populations. The organization states that their mission is to strengthen the capacity of community organizations through education, mentorship, and mobilization. We support, inspire,...
