Apr 17, 2012 - Cyprus - Limassol & Kyrenia

You don't need to be a Facebook user to view the the Cyprus album, copy and paste the link https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151501802310707.833781.746395706&type=3&l=dc363065d1 Easter Sunday We had hoped to take a bus into town, but we are told it is the start of four days public holiday, and most places will be shut. Mid-morning people are coming back into the hotel reporting that almost everything is shut. The weather is not that flash either, so it is a good day to blob out. At lunchtime the hotel puts on Easter drinks and...

Apr 6, 2012 - Girne/Kyrenia, Cyprus

Wiki Info Nicosia To ferry port...we could not get more euro so who knows what the situation in Cyprus will be for $$. We seem to always be getting more and can't afford running out of local currency. Finally on board ferry at 11:30pm and we meet 4 Norwegians, Lars - an economist, Gullik - a lawyer, Randi - art historian, and Ulf - art historian ( not work in same museum in Oslo)...travelling in E. Turkey and now - since it was quite cold there - they are able to spend last 4 days in Cyprus before flying home. Very interesting folks though...

Apr 5, 2012 - Kyrenia (Girne)

Wiki Info Kyrenia I find that I'm comparing Turks to Greeks due to their past history, but this is not fair to either. In many ways the two peoples are very similar. I have found them to be very gregarious, often joking and generally enjoying life. Last night we 'stumbled' into Hotel Ayatekla just a few blocks from where the bus dropped us off at 11:30pm! Very glad to have arrived, hopefully, a day early...we check the ferry times/tickets next. Back from a trip to Tasucu port where we bought midnight tickets to Girne, Cyprus. Walking...

Sep 25, 2006 - Kyrenia, Cyprus (Time: Alberta +9 hrs)

The truth is that we have sent the week in a country not recognized as independent by the outside world. The TRNC(Turkish Republic of Northen Cyprus) sadly found its way to existance through much violence and bloodshed in 1974. The mixed Greek and Turkish population came to blows or the same reason and motivation as most battles through history- control and location. Although the southern republic of Cyprus and the north are independent of each other, for people like Deana and I, we only need to present our passports to be allowed to cross...

Jul 8, 2004 - Only the best

Bellapais, high 20s, clear night. Well, I'm lying - I'm actually writing in the conference space of the Hotel in Nicosia - this all happened yesterday for me, and I'm playing catch up. We went to visit Eastern Mediterranean University, the largest University on the island that's located in Famagusta. It's one of the Turkish Cypriot community universities - one of five located in the north. What's up with that? We've been hearing how much better off the south is economically, and yet their one tiny university can't hold a candle to EMU,...
