May 19, 2019 - A day in Split, Croatia

Day 23 Sunday 19th May 2019 Split, Croatia 𯇭𯇷 The ship arrived quite early in Split today. We were up at around 7:45am, then down to breakfast at around 8:30am. The weather was overcast and quite chilly so we didn’t rush over breakfast. We left the ship at around 10am to walk through the port to the town of Split, the walk took about 25 minutes. There is a very old Roman palace here from 305AD (the Palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian, who retired to this coast just across from Italy). There are now many shops, a large uninteresting...

May 18, 2019 - Danced the night away

Long bus drive to Split, but past beautiful Olive groves and grape vines. Stopped at roadside cafe en route. Heather noticed that our paper coffee cups had different faces printed on them. The teacher in her came out, and she asked everyone to stack the cups for a photo. Some folk really wondered what was in her coffee! Photo of part of collection attached! Trogir Island - beautiful village - Greek and Roman history Founded by Greeks as a trading port in 3rd century BC Beautiful Cathedral and Renaissance Cipiko Roman Palace - (Emperor...

70 Canals 2019

Dec 6, 2018 - Split is really beautiful.

Got a late start yesterday. We pretty much both hit the jet lag wall at the same time. Spent the day in the Diocletian Palace, just wandering around. Dioclese was a 4th century Roman Emperor who lived and died here and had a palace that spanned many city blocks. You can just wander through - it’s part of the city, not a museum or tourist attraction. His mausoleum is now a Catholic Calthedral. The old city has a boardwalk kind of thing facing the sea. All outdoor restaurants on one side and little pop up food and drink places on the other....

Sep 27, 2018 - We had it better under Tito

September 26-27, 2018 Split, Croatia We had it better under Tito You’ve gotta hand it to someone when they come up with a pretty good gimmick. At Pizzeria Bokamorra in Split, the gimmick is pizza in a box. Well, to be exact, the pizza menu comes in a very fancy box. The menu lists the 6 (count ‘em) pizzas available. You don’t like any of those choices? Go somewhere else. But you will find one you like, trust me. Like the Smokvizza – figs, goat cheese, pistachio & honey. The fancy box also contains the cocktails menu – there is a cocktail...

Sep 18, 2018 - Split and Prep for Bike Tour

Today was a calmer day - happily, all fun, no calamities. My uniform for breakfast was a bathing suit bottom plus a cycling jersey... because it was laundry day! I thought we’d only go to the laundromat, breakfast and back. Well, it turns out we could leave the laundry to be done, folded and wrapped for us at a very reasonable price, only 75 Kuna ($12.) Being spared that chore, we went out for a fun day and I looked ridiculous for several hours. [NO JOKES PLEASE.] We did a two-part tour of the Diocletian Palace. Our guide was very good and...

Jun 4, 2018 - Split take two

We slept in today and enjoyed left over Orahnjaca and orange juice on the balcony over looking the city in the distance. Returning the rental car was a chore and ended up taking 2.5 hours. Split’s old town is filled with squares, cobble streets and interesting old buildings. There are remains from Diocletians Palace. Diocletian was a Roman emperor for 21 years and was known for his persecution of Christians. He retired in this palace after it was built in early 300 AD. Today pieces remain among buildings from the 1300’s on. In the entrance...

Venice/Croatia

May 1, 2018 - Off to Split

The date is now Monday 30th April and we are heading to Split. The road curves around the coastline with the sea on one side and limestone mountains on the other. Limestone cliffs and aquamarine water what more could you ask for? Split is about 220kms from Dubrovnik and our first stop was at a roadside stall beside the fertile valley of Neretva. Fresh fruit, jams and liqueurs. We tasted lemon, mandarin, fig, pomegranate liqueur and different jams and sugared almonds. And it was only 10am! Our tour leader Branco says it is good Croatian...

May 1, 2018 - Boat ride to the Islands of Brac and Solta

Today is all about relaxing, swimming, eating, drinking and exploring. Not much different from previous days you think but it also involves a boat trip out to the islands of Brac and Solta which are close to Split. We anchored near Brac and had the opportunity to have a swim, from the boat. After lunch we moved onto Solta where we could explore the island and go for another swim if we liked. Or just enjoy an ice cream of course. A lovely day spent relaxing.

Oct 11, 2017 - Split

We arrived in Split on a beautiful day, sunshine 20C with 0% chance of rain in the forecast and that is exactly what we got. We took a tour away from Split which took us to the famous Blue Lake, which this year ran dry because of hot, dry spring and summer. Apparently no rain from May 19 through to end of September with temperatures around 35C to 38C throughout that period. So this year no one swam in the Blue Lake but rather used the bottom for soccer matches between rival teams, the last of which drew 2,000 fans. Pretty neat given that...

Sep 23, 2017 - Split Croatia

On the road. After an early rise and because it would have been a very long walk, or two local buses to the bus station, we had two mini vans that got us there without fuss. Except for getting luggage up those entry stairs. Lots of rugged hills. Occassional towns. Indications of remains of stone fences and small stone houses on the rocky hills. Where there were river flood plains, lots of intensive planting. Houses on the slopes, every inch of the flat areas used. Border...check out the map of croatia and its neighbour Bosnia...

Sep 10, 2017 - A Croatian Birthday for Heather

Heather started out the day with a 5 mile run! Road trip to the north to Split. A very warm day but a lovely wind off the ocean. Our first stop was our hotel. Up the steps from the street, only 6 rooms. We are lucky that we are on the first floor so we don't have to carry our luggage up another level. We have the smallest room with the biggest TV! For some reason our suitcases are getting harder to close and heavier and we have not added anything to them! We walked down to the city center located on the bay. Promenade is filled with ice...

Sep 9, 2017 - Split, Dalmatia, Croatia

From Makarska, it was a short 75 k to Split. It should have taken no more than 11/2 hours but traffic was heavy and we had lots of time to admire the countryside. It had rained through the night and 'tablecloth' clouds obscured mountaintops. Huge grey rocky spines descended from on high into the ocean. In placesrecent fires had burned all brush, low bushes and trees. There were many little villages and towns spared. In the Adriatic we could see one long island. We could see 2 towns on it. Around the corner from Split, we encountered stop...
