Nov 28, 2017 - San Jose
A pleasant 22 deg in San Jose and a morning to while away before our flight home, early this evening. A bit of rain has come in from the mountains which reminds me that Stuart slept through the incredible storm 2 nights ago!!! Time to stretch our legs before the flight. We can see the Gran d’Oro Hotel & Restaurant from our room. Happy memories of a superb meal, so we wander there for a coffee. It is decked out for Christmas with massive trees, baubles and lots of Poinsettias! Even has Silent Night, Winter Wonderland and many more tunes...Jump to full entry
Nov 18, 2017 - San Jose to Tortuguero
6.15 a.m. start and a stop for breakfast en-route! Yesterday we met most of our group. Several ladies travelling in pairs as husbands not interested in travelling. Stuart was pleased that there are 2 other husbands on the trip plus a very shy chap on his own. Very interesting to hear the different routes taken to get here - via Paris, via Amsterdam and one couple via Guatemala! All had long troublesome journeys so our hour at San Jose airport was nothing! It never ceases to amaze me that despite all the places on Earth we would wish to...Jump to full entry
Nov 17, 2017 - La Paz Waterfall Gardens & Doka Coffee Plantation
What a beautiful morning! The sun is up, the sky is blue and we are off on our first visit of the trip. Costa Rica is only 9 deg off the Equator so has 12 hours of daylight all year round, from 5.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. consequently most people start, and finish, work early. Hence the evening rush hour starts at 2.30 p.m.! Victor, our guide, is on hand and we meet the rest of the group, minus 2 just for today. First stop is the Doka Coffee Plantation. Coffee is one of the big exports of the country alongside bananas and pineapples. 95% of the...Jump to full entry
Nov 16, 2017 - San Jose - The future is Insects!
Hooray, the sun is out and we can see the mountains and even cloud forests across the rooftops! Suncream on. Off the beaten track to The Museum of Insects, on the campus of the University of Costa Rica which has 27,000 students.. Busman’s holiday for Stuart! Situated under the Faculty of Music building, of course, it is the largest insect museum in Central America. Having rung the bell we are met by Federico, a qualified Biologist working here as a technician. We wander round the beautifully put together exhibits in one medium sized room....Jump to full entry
Nov 15, 2017 - San Jose - Culture!
We awake to the bustling city sounds and discover we have a large balcony and a hot tub! Fits with the very spacious room and massive bed we have! Not necessarily the prettiest view to enjoy though. Off early on a day of ‘culture’ to discover the National Museum is open at 8.30! A beautiful entrance through a tropical butterfly garden with stunningly, exotic and huge butterflies. The museum is fascinating and housed in what was originally a coffee farm (German owned) then a military academy. Superb displays on the country’s history and...Jump to full entry

Mar 7, 2016 - The Amazing Race - Central America
It feels like so much has happened in the past 17 days. Our usual relaxed travel pace exchanged for what became the amazing race throughout Latin America. It still started with the same familiar buzz mixed with a healthy amount of anxiousness as we made our way to Sydney International Airport. I was sure by now I would be immune to the excitement and butterflies that the prospect of new adventures brings. It appears I'm not, that feeling never gets old. The short break at home made it feel as if we were starting out on our adventure all...Jump to full entry
Feb 20, 2016 - Day 1
We stayed in Toronto last night since we needed to get to the airport at 4:30 am. Even though we were there early it took us 2 hours to get through security and US customs. In the end our flight was delayed due to mechanical problems. Our 7:15 am flight finally took off at 8:30 am. We flew to Charlotte, North Carolina. We only had enough time to grab some fast food and eat it while our plane was boarding. When we arrived in San Jose, we had to disembark on the tarmac and take a bus to the terminal since there were no gates available for us....Jump to full entry
Dec 24, 2015 - Flying to Costa Rica
For the holiday season this year, Sandy and I headed to Costa Rica for an action-packed week of adventure and fun. My employer has an end-of-year holiday shut down and I didn’t want to let perfectly good vacation time go to waste. We left Raleigh early on Christmas Eve. Since the holidays are peak travel time, everything was very busy. We had to have our car valet-parked at Fast Park and Relax before heading to the airport as the parking lot was completely full. Fortunately, we made it to the airport in time and none of our flights were...Jump to full entry
Dec 14, 2015 - Where Trogons live ....
It's been a very fast two weeks but we have packed a ton in and the last days of our time here were no exception. And the final opportunities to experience all that the roads of Costa Rica could throw our way. I'm pleased to say that they tried their best but we had their number! Well, that would be stretching the truth. We actually had no real idea what the name or number of any road in Costa Rica really was at any time and even the GPS of our rent-a-Hyundai was stumped. Half the time it simply referred to our location as "unpaved road"....Jump to full entry
Nov 30, 2015 - Sleep? What an interesting concept....
Sleep? What an interesting concept.... Buenos Noches, Senors y Senoras! We have arrived in Costa Rica in good spirits and totally sleep deprived. A quick questionnaire on sleep: Q. Sleep is (choose one): a. Over-rated. You'll sleep when you're dead. b. Contra-indicated on red eye flights from Edmonton to Toronto. c. Most "fun" when seated next to a howling 1 year old named Neo (seriously - that's his name - like in The Matrix!) squirming in his mommy's arms for the 5 hours flight from Toronto to San Jose (Only Mikey gets to choose...Jump to full entry
Jan 6, 2015 - Santa Ana - San Jose
Arrived in San Jose, CR. Checked into Hotel Posada Canal Grande $39 overlooking city. Spent the day at the pool watching the clouds blow by and recouping from our overnight flight. Explored the local neighborhood shops and ate at the Oveja Negra (black sheep) $5 a small plate. Enjoyed a great fruit smoothie with basil and had a couple Imperial beers as the sun went down. Made a reservation tomorrow for our arrival in Los Chiles. Tried to decypher the bus routes for our 5 hr ride to the nicaraguan border manana.Jump to full entry
