Feb 16, 2014 - The bus trip

Well I decided tonight that I' going to start heading my way to Nicaragua. This isn't a bit country but it sure takes a long time to travel by bus. I decided to bus it instead of fly because it's obviously cheaper and I wanted to check out the bus. $15 from Puerto Jimenez to San Jose and flying would have cost my over a hundred. I also had to be there by 430 am. Not so bad if I wasn't up at 4 to go fishing, which we did from shore, the morning before. I had a great supper with Cory and his wife and kids and Jan and his girlfriend and son....

Feb 14, 2014 - One more weekend in PJ

Well I had typed out a long message and then a computer glitch and boom I lost it. So here we go AGAIN. I've had a good week this week and have been doing some fishing with Cory. Mostly in the morning to help him catch bait for his guests. Up at 430-5 every other day to catch bait but it's not like I have a large amount of stuff going on. I can always come back, turn on the AC and have a nap. Most people do that here anyways. One morning while on the dock after catching some bait I met Cory's guests and it turns out I knew them from Scott...

Feb 9, 2014 - Still in PJ

Well I guess I won't get up into the mountains after all. Seems the bus was actually on time, however I though it was a different time.. 6 instead of 5. Ah well Maybe next time. I've been spending my days walking the shoreline and checking things out. It's very peaceful down by the ocean and it's about the only place with a breeze. It's about 35 today and I'd guess about 90% humidity. I literally have sweat running at all times. If I walk then it pours off. Normally I'm fine but I seem to be a little but dehydrated today and have a bit of a...

Feb 4, 2014 - Settled in PJ

Hey guys it's me again. Just got back from a great breakfast of huevos rancheros and I thought id see if I could upload a video. Dang videos are too big so I guess it's just photos. I'm staying at a nice little place called the La Choza del Manglar. It's a very basic room but the grounds are incredible. Some amazing trees, plants and flowers with monkeys and Scarlet McCaws. It's incredibly humid today after yesterdays downpour and at 9 am I'm sweating like crazy. One thing about this beautiful garden is that there isn't much breeze. My...

Nov 28, 2010 - Panama to Costa Rica

So, did we make it up Volcan Baru? Oh yes. All 13.5k, uphill all the way- not surprisingly, but we hadn't expected that to be virtually all at a 45 degree incline. The trail was poor to appalling, even 4WD vehicles had a really tough time getting up it. Oh, and by the way we were carrying our packs with camping kit so that we could sleep at the top and see the sunrise. Now guess whose idea this whole mad plan was. That said, we had great weather, no rain until after we had put the tent up, and a gorgeous morning with fantastic sunrise. The...

Jan 20, 2009 - Peurto Jimenez

Puerto Jimenez The town or village of Puerto Jimenez grows on you and we thought we would share some of our favorite places and people in no particular order. The internet café right on Main Street is perfect for staying in touch with high speed service and you’ll always see it filled with foreigners “phoning home” For breakfast we liked Carolinas right in the heart of town. Great eggs, pancakes, juices, etc and also good people watching. They also sell Cuban cigars in the gift shop. Dinner is a quandary as they are several good places. A...

Jan 13, 2009 - Falls at Matapalo

Today is our last full day on the OSA and in Puerto Jimenez. We’re off to the area of Matapalo to see wildlife and the 100ft water falls. The journey is about an 18km drive down that rock road we previously took to Backwash Bay. It’s another beautiful, but hot and muggy day hovering and 90 degrees. I should say that most of the time there is a breeze. Forty five minutes later we are parking at the beach, but until after we photographed a Green Kingfisher on a branch over one of the many creeks we crossed. Jon and I walk about ¼ mile before...

Jan 11, 2009 - Kayaking the Red Mangroves

This afternoon was spent kayaking the Red Mangroves just outside of Puerto Jimenez. Our guide was a young college graduate, Laura from Costa Rica. The seven of us started out at a sandy beach and headed West into the mangroves up a narrow inlet. The further in, the darker it got as the canopy grew. After about 45 mins, we doubled back towards a sand dune to the Gulf. About half way, Laura called out to one of the kayaks to look out due to a boa hanging in a tree directly over them. As it turned out it was a 5ft Rainbow Boa Constrictor...

Jan 10, 2009 - Gringo Cowboys

January 9,2009 Gringo Cowboys Today is another gorgeous day. We off to the Rio Nuevo Lodge on the Rio Nuveo River north of town to do some horse back riding. The ride up takes a serious 4x4 as we cross the river several times with deep ruts. Our guide is Jario Arce, a young semi pro soccer player. Our wrangler is Elias. The cook is Flora. As we near the top of the mountain with spectacular vistas, Jario makes us dismount to observe Leaf Cutter Ants. It’ something out of National Geographic. (photos)They have trails everywhere with ants...

Feb 28, 2008 - Puerto Jimenez at last.

Long ride today, lots of gravel roads, some highway riding (we dodged a donkey, a goat and several wild dogs). CR is pretty wiped, last night when he went to bed I heard him scream that were no sheets on his bed, pure mattress for the poor guy. We have landed in Puerto Jimenez and had a great ride, but I am sure we will be moving on tommorrow. No pictures for now this computer is a dog. Puerto Jimenez was not quite what we were expecting when we arrived there are some great national parks, and some fishing down here, but that will throw us...

Apr 27, 2007 - Cruising Golfo Dulce

We had a lazy day today. We ordered breakfast in our cabin and had enjoyed it on our balcony watching the sea slip past. We went to a lecture on travel photography which did not provide much fresh information, but was well presented and showed some beautiful photographs. Interestingly this was another Canadian. All three of the lecturers we have heard have been from Canada. We walked round the promenade deck several times to keep in reasonable shape and counteract the good food. We went back to our room and I downloaded yesterday's movies...

Jun 15, 2006 - Costa Rica: Puerto Jiminez

Hotel: Pizza Rock cabinas-7.00-a brass bed with mosquito nets and a nice window which framed a beautiful flock of Scarlet Macaws flying by! But, later...a lower room was musty and hot. I arrived from Golfito at 1 pm after a 1 1/2 hour boat ride across the Gulfo Dulce. Beautiful mountains of jungle coming right down to the waters edge surrounds the bay. In the right season, the dry season, our winter, the humback wahles come into the gulf to breed and the wahle watching is supposed to be great. Dolphins are also plentiful but none...
