We had a guided tour of the Santa Elena Cloud Forest for 3 hours. It is the highest cloud forest in the Monteverde area. The forest area here is covered with clouds most of the time. There are over-sized ferns, exotic orchids, and giant vines. We walked 12 kms of trails and climbed up the observation tower where we could see above the tree canopy and see the Pacific Ocean! We heard the haunting call of the 'bell bird' but we couldn't see it. The rare and elusive quetzal, a bird once revered by the pre-Columbia people's of America is found...

Mar 1, 2016 - Day 11

We had a short bus ride to Lake Arenal, which is the largest lake in Costa Rica. We boarded a boat and rode down the lake. In the background we could see Arenal Volcano. It's peak was hidden most of the time with cloud cover. We also could see Cerro Chato volcano right beside it. Lake Arenal is a long, beautiful lake surrounded by rolling hills that are partly pastured and partly forested. Rainbow-bass are fished in this lake.
