Feb 14, 2018 - Paddling in Tortuguero, or canoing and creepy crawly things

Barb insists that it is my turn to write, Thanks to her while I took a few days off. We have landed in some otherworldy parallel universe. How did we get here? A driver picked us up at 5:30 am (yes) and we drove to a staging area for several adventure tours. Barb and I are off to Tortuguero National Park with four Germans and two Swiss. This area is accessible only by boat as there are canals parallelling the coast with offshoots to other smaller villages. On the way to our little town we saw cayman and a variety of birds including pelican,...

Feb 13, 2018 - Tortuguero: into the rainforest

Well, it has happened again... I was just completing what I am sure was a witty and erudite commentary of the day when the computer stopped working and failed to save any of it... GRRRRR!!! Today we left La Fortuna after waking up at 5 am and were dressed, packed and out the door by 5:30 am. Why is it that I have to get up 2 hours before I need to leave the house in the morning when I am working and still feel rushed for time?... We are in Tortuguero, an area at the extreme northeast of the country on the Caribbean sea which is only...

Nov 20, 2017 - Tortuguero to Arenal

It is still raining this morning but the sky is beginning to brighten over breakfast. Sadly it is time to leave Tortuguero and head to La Fortuna, or Lucky Town, at the base of the Arsenal Volcano. Just before we leave the rain returns and we wave off the group on the boat ride today. How lucky we were with our weather! So, back by boat to the pick up point to transfer to our minibus. It is great to meet up again with our first group but sad to say farewell to our Mantuso Lodge friends. We do think however that our paths will cross again in...

Nov 19, 2017 - Tortuguero rainforest

Howler monkeys calling, birds screeching and the lap of water is our alarm call. Down to the river to see the magical sunrise, shrimps jumping to catch insects, herons lurking to catch the shrimps and poisonous Puffer Fish in the river. Our first ‘boat safari ‘ on the Tortuguero river and into the canals of the National Park. Wow, it is really hard to convey how amazing it is! Our guide has incredible eyesight spotting just a few of the over 200 species in this rainforest. Costa Rica boasts 920 species of birds, so far! We see...

Feb 24, 2016 - Day 5

We got up at 5 am. It was dark and the moon was still high in the sky. We were on the canals by 5:30. This area is a bird watcher's paradise. We rode through the Limon Canal of the Tortuguero National Park (311 sq. km coastal park) and off into smaller canals. These canals were created in 1974 to connect a series of lagoons and meandering rivers. The park extends into the Carribean Sea protecting 5200 sq. km of marine habitat. This area is the wettest in the country getting 6000 mm of rain annually. We saw so many different species of birds...

Feb 23, 2016 - Day 4

We drove north to Tortuguero. We stopped at a small town to have breakfast. We took a bus on paved roads for 3 hours. We could see the Turrialba Volcano in the distance, steaming. It is still active. Costa Rica has about 300 volcanoes. There are cameras placed near them to warn for eruptions. These active volcanoes can spew out boulders at very far distances. The last 1/2 hour of the bus ride was on a very bumpy gravel road where it ended at Pavanol. We boarded a canoe shaped boat and rode for 1 hour on the meandering Tortuguero River to...

Apr 17, 2015 - Costa Rica

After a long and tiring flight we finally arrived in Costa Rica. We decided that to avoid the San Jose crowd we would stay the first night near the Alajuela airport and take an early flight to Tortuguero the next morning. We landed in the evening, it can be quite intimidating when getting out of the airport, but after a short ride in a taxi we arrived at our hotel at about 9pm. We drop our bags and headed to the center of town looking for a place to have dinner, as it was so late it took us a bit until we finally found a small and cosy...

Feb 28, 2012 - Tortuguero

Feb. 28 Gloria treated us to great breakfast complete with rice and beans and we were on our way to Limon where we stopped at a grocery store and ATM. I love grocery stores other than my regular ones. It's great fun to wander and see what people eat. Sometimes we even pick up something weird and try it. Todays adventure was coconut water as Bari says it's good for you and some different chips. Coconut water is okay and the chips....definitely not lays. Arriving in Moin we unloaded our gear into a boat and traveled up the Moin River,...

2 heures...
