Feb 12, 2014 - Poas Volcano

We began the day driving thru San Jose with all of the morning traffic. With that we were really not able to see or photograph much. We did see the statue of Juan Santamaria, a national hero, who was able to save the country in the 1850's. William Walker, a native of Tennessee, had overtaken Nicaragua and decided to do the same in Costa Rica. Men were asked to stop the take over and Juan Santamaria was one of many who stepped forward. It was decided that burning down the encampment was the best way and after one failure that resulted in a...

Feb 7, 2014 - Volcanos, bus rides, and coffee

Today begins the Caravan Tours bus journey. Essentially for the next week we will be on the road traveling with a group of 44 fellow Costa Rican explorers. All of these explorers have in common an interest in seeing the natural flora and fauna that Costa Rico is noted. What we are learning is that traveling with 44 people of various ages, energy levels, degrees of mobility, appetites, and tolerances for others will be part of our Costa Rican experience. Tonight at dinner our turtle expedition group was beginning to compare notes on some of...

Feb 4, 2011 - Hasta la Vista!

Holla... Another day, our last day in Paradise! I woke up to the smell of coffee in our room. Mr. Roque had already started the coffee maker and I believed I had died and gone to heaven. What a place this is!!!! You open your eyes and stare directly at the rain forrest, unbelievable. I decided to drink my cup on the balcony and opened my laptop to see if I found anyone online. My Uncle was online, he called my dad who said he'd be home in an hour or so. I talked to him for a while, then my sister Melanie came on line, I talked to her for a...

Feb 3, 2011 - La "Paz" Peacelodge Resort

Pura Vida!!!!! To follow up from my previous entry: The taxi took us back to the "Toucan" where we waited for our "transport" Hector walked around and found a bakery, got us each a ham and cheese sandwhich and got back just when our ride arrived. We loaded up into another minivan driven by Carlos. We picked up a few passengers and we were on our way to the Peace Lodge where I had made a reservation for our last two days. The place was recommended by Jeff whose wife Tina also teaches at 24 hr fitness. According to Jeff this place is...

Aug 4, 2008 - Volcano Poas, Costa Rica

This National Park is a quick day trip out of San Jose. We had to wake early to catch view of the crater as after about 10am the fog rolls in and you can't even tell there is a crater below you...you see nothing! The pictures don't really do this crater justice. It spits steam smelling of eggs (sulfur) at all hours and is apparently Costa Rica's most active volcano. Wouldn't wanna be around here if it were to blow again!

Jul 5, 2007 - Peace Lodge

If you jump in a car from either Arenal or San Jose & head towards the Poas Volcano (no buses can go here), swing a right at Agua Saltenas, the road climbs & climbs once more back into the clouds. It's not a wide road nor a safe one, we saw a nasty crash on the way up, but eventually you break out at the top & enter a very magical place. La Paz Waterfall Gardens. This is the creme de la creme of luxary, but please don't tell anyone. Why? because this place is unique! Perched high up in the cloud forest is a private reserve with a good...
