Dec 4, 2007 - Back in La Fortuna

Ok not much to say other than I came back to La Fortuna after the Las Pumas trip because I had time to and it helps with tomorrows trip to Tortugeuro on the carribean side of Costa Rica, by avoiding San Jose which is just a busy city. I've down well avoiding so far in Central America. Anyway all the good stuff like stories and photos are in the other entry for today titled "Las Pumas".

Nov 28, 2007 - Border crossing

Well lets just say I arose early this morning after my afternoon lap lasted 13 hours or so. Must have been the sleep deprivation on the ferry. I caught the express boat back to San Carlos, I had no idea it was the express boat until 1. It went really fast 2. It didn't stop for no one or drop anyone off. 3. They charged me more. It did give me time to grab some gallopinto and eggs for breakfast. Gallopinto isn't too bad but i've had it for a few meals now in this part of Nicaragua. Variety is the spice of life and I ain't getting my...

Nov 23, 2007 - Hiking Cerro Chato, La Fortuna

We started the day with a sumptuous breakfast the hotel's volcano side restaurant. Then we went on a morning hike through the rain forest with a guide. We came to know about the volcano's glory days. We also sighted many species of humming birds, which were way faster than I had imagined. We went to a cascade and then returned to the hotel in a tractor drawn carriage. The hotel receptionist encouraged us to climb Cerro Chato, a dormant volcano nearby, whose crater had turned into a lake. We were very excited by the idea, packed some...

Nov 8, 2007 - Playing in LaFortuna

LaFortuna offers a wide variety of ways to play. We had choices of mountain biking, white water rafting, canyoning, bungee jumping, horseback riding, night hikes at the volcano to view lava, windsurfing and kite boarding on Lake Arenal, hikes to swim in the locally famous La Fortuna waterfall, and more. Since the canyoning was simply rappelling down waterfalls, and I've been rappelling before, I decided to pass on that. I also didn't need to do another rafting trip, and I felt a little too tired for a strenuous hike. I was looking forward...

Nov 7, 2007 - La Fortuna / Arenal Volcano

Hola Everyone! This morning we completed our trek down from Rara Avis to Horquetas, changed into drier clothes, and piled in the van for our trip to the La Forunta/Arenal Volcano area. The bus ride was uneventful, and we were all looking forward to checking into our hotel in La Fortuna for a hot shower and dry clothes. La Fortuna is the gateway town for exploring Volcán Arenal and the associated national park. In addition, the area is crawling with tour companies offering any number of adventure activities you would care to try. Read more...

Jul 22, 2007 - La Fortuna and Volcan Arenal

Day 2: Minibus through windy mountains roads to La Fortuna, a stop at a wildlife refuge, a rainforest hike, viewing a live volcano, and enjoying the natural hot springs in the area Everything is great (thank goodness I'm out of San Jose, the necessary evil of Costa Rica!) The people are all very nice and the scenery is BEAUTIFUL! Costa Rica is not in any way an underdeveloped country - at least what I have seen. It's very safe (in the tourist areas) and there is little extreme poverty. Most people seem to be middle class; I haven't noticed...

Apr 26, 2007 - La Fortuna: Lava, lava...run for your lives!!!

La Fortuna Next stop was La Fortuna, a small but totally tourist centric town nestled in between Lake Arenal and Volcan Arenal. I took the jeep-horse-boat-jeep travel option from Monteverde which included a guide horse trek with Jose aka The Mullet (see pic). Not having ridden before was a bit scary to be on a huge horse when it started galloping because it hated being behind Tamara's horse, I didn't really fancy getting more stitches after only having then out the day before. Was all cool though and I'm sure I set a dashing profile of a...
