Jul 4, 2008 - White Water Rafting

Up at 7:00 and walk to breakfast again. Alice and Veronica swim in the pool – nice view! Then off to the van. White Water rafting on the Rio Toro. We drive up the mountains through some interesting areas then arrive at a construction site. We’re given a safety lecture and issues helmets, life vests, and paddles. Veronica was quite scared and was crying a bit before we started. The river itself was fairly calm when we arrived then picked up quite a bit as the dam up river released water. Quite the trip! Most of the time we would paddle a bit...

Jul 3, 2008 - Horses and waterfalls

Get up and – no hot water. Walk to a nearby hotel for our included breakfast (with beans and rice) then back to the hotel to meet our bus. We’re off on a waterfall adventure. Go horseback riding for about an hour, then we walk about a mile to the river and waterfall. I forgot to bring swim suits so Alice was pissed. She gets in the water anyway – quite swift. Lots of people swimming where the waterfall hits, but many in the river as well. I get a bit wet too. Then back to the horses and ride back to the stable, then the van into town for...

Jul 2, 2008 - Volcano!

Up at 7:30 and breakfast (with black beans and rice). Veronica and Alice still not talking. Mess around on the beach a bit before we have to leave. We board the boat and head back to Moin. We see a sloth on the way but no monkeys. We start joking that the only monkey we’ll see is the little toy hanging from the van’s rear view mirror. Veronica was sick on the trip (car sick?). Another open air lunch (with beans and rice) at an "Inguana farm" - a place where they feed the local lizards so they hang around for tourists to take pictures of....

Apr 23, 2008 - Finally a hot bath

Off to La Fortuna today, for a look at yet another volcano (the fourth most active in the world) and a couple of side trips around the Arenal National Park. Did a great journey from Monteverde to La Fortuna by jeep-boat-jeep, across the artifical Arenal Lake. Sadly, Volcan Arenal was covered in cloud, as it has been for the past couple of weeks according to everyone I´ve spoken to who has been here recently. The group I was travelling with included an Australian couple, Brendan and Ang, and no-one else on the journey said a word apart from...

Apr 9, 2008 - Arenal / La Fortuna

It was a long day today. It started with a 1.5 hour van ride through the mountain passes leaving Monteverde, then a 3 hour horseback trip around Laguna Arenal (with Arenal Volcano as a backdrop), followed by a 1/2 hour boat ride across the laguna, and another 1/2 hr van ride into La Fortuna. After a leisurely 1 hour break for a late lunch, it was off to our night hike around the Arenal volcano where we spotted more toucans (we had seen some earlier on our horseback ride). The topper was watching the volcano erupt after dark... while...

Feb 27, 2008 - Eco Termal Hot Springs

I checked in to Gringo Pete's Hostel in La Fortuna this morning. I have a teeny room with private bath and there is a nice community area indoor and outdoor for the backpackers. Usually there are only young kids from around the world in hostels but today there are 2 couples of about my age here. The owner is Pete from Washington State who has lived here in Costa Rica for 6 years. He is very knowledgeable about tours and the Arenal area in general. He seems very proud of his hostel. This afternoon I went to Eco Termal hot springs. There...

Feb 14, 2008 - Costa Rica: La Fortuna

We spent two nights in La Fortuna, a small town in the mountains in north central Costa Rica, famous for Volcano Arenal, which is still active, and its offer of outdoor activities. Most of us went to the Baldi Hot Springs the first evening, a Las Vegas-style thermal bath with natural hot water. The water slide was deadly but we couldn't stop laughing the spins and flips and shakes our people went through when sliding down. The next day I signed up for a river tour in the Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge, where we saw caymans, lizards,...

K&S Costa Rica 2008

Jan 18, 2008 - SECOND HALF- ARTICLE: San Jose and La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Our plan was to be fully relaxed and caught up after our time at home, but those days moved past us in a hurry and instead we were scrambling to figure out on the plane flight to Costa Rica what exactly we would be doing there. Luckily (or unluckily depending on how you look at it) our flight was far from direct. We were first sent to Houston, where we had a layover of seven hours before continuing on to San Jose, Costa Rica. The good part for us was that we had ample time to hatch a plan. There was a lot to see in Costa Rica and we only...
