Apr 21, 2016 - on the Road to San Gil

A early start today as it is another long drive to San Gil 370km and 12 hours to our camp site near San Gil. Some of the roads are paved but full of pot holes and then the same road is dirt filled with pot holes, so very rough riding. A few bathroom and refreshment stops, then a stop at a big supermarket to buy stuff for the next couple days food as we will be in a camping area, so will be fixing all our meals, we are divided into groups, with each groups fixing the meals for the rest of our group. We get to our camp site it is a very basic...

Apr 30, 2014 - Cartagena to San Gil, Colombia

Monday 28th April 2014 Cartagena to Agua Chica, Colombia Packed up from Cartagena this morning and left after breakfast at around 7:30am, heading south. Once we were out of the city, there was lots of delays due to roadworks. We travelled through the countryside, mainly across one of the major river valleys in Colombia where people had farmed for many thousands of years. The ancients had worked out how to “tame” the rivers when the floods came each year by digging side channels in a featherlike pattern, for the water to run off into and...

Jul 17, 2012 - San Gil

San Gil. So the bus never stops at a bus station and I see people getting off and wonder where I should get off. I ask someone if this is San Gil and if there I a bus station. I didn't quite understand their answer but I did get that it was San Gil do I went up front and asked them where I need to get off to get a taxi to town. They pull over a block ahead and I find a taxi and make it to the hostel. The hostel is nice. Very quiet. People are relaxing watching tv. Cooking dinner. Downstairs people are laying in hammocks sitting by the hot...

My Travels

Apr 8, 2011 - San Gil - Colombia

April 6, 2011 I only stayed the one night in Buca. The temp was nice but it’s just a big shitty town. Plus I have been here before and seen what needs to be seen. My next stop was a town called San Gil. It was only a 2 ½ hour drive from Buca to San Gil. At 1100m the temp in San Gil was nice and it’s beautiful little town. It really reminds me of Germany. There are a lot of really cool drives that can be done around San Gil. I stayed in San Gil for two days. The first day I arrived around 11:00 and was settled in around 12:00. I spent the...

Mar 30, 2010 - San Gil and Barichara

I am now in San Gil, 4 hours by bus from my previous location. I arrived Saturday afternoon. The weather here is much warmer since we're only at 1100 metres. It's similar to Toronto in summer. San Gil is known as the extreme sport centre of Colombia. It's also close to another cute little colonial town called Barichara. San Gil itself is not particularly beautiful, but it has a large urban natural reserve called Parque Gallineral, located by the river. The river Ponce sits at the bottom of a valley and divides the city in two. I haven't...

Jul 24, 2009 - Arrivée a San Gil

May 2, 2009 - Eine schwere Entscheidung...

SAN...

Jan 11, 2008 - Paragliding is amazing!!!

When i last wrote I was in Villa de leyva. We spent 4 nights there. The last day we went to a national park for a nice hike. The flora and fauna was really beautiful and different. It was hard because the starting elevation was like 8,000 feet and much of the trial is straight up...no switch backs. We took a local bus there and the park is on a small road with very few cars. We finished at two and would have had to wait for 2 hours for the bus, but a nice couple gave us a lift to town...lucky because it started to rain hard. We befriended a...

Jan 10, 2008 - Edventuring in San Gil

Photos are to come but I am having trouble with using my memory stick here. Touted as the adventure (or in my case Edventure) sports capital of Colombia, San Gil was a great place. From Villa de Leyva me, Rachel, and a newfound friend, a Dutchman named Bram, travelled most of the day to get there. The hostal we wanted was full so Rachel and I had to spend two nights in a normal hotel before moving to the backpacker hostal. On another tangent ... if I were to ask people to say one buzzword about each country in the world, probably the most...
