Apr 26, 2016 - Santa Marta, Colombia for 4 Nights

On the road again. It's been about 2 months since Portugal and that 14 day Cruise. Oh and the days in New York City and those 4 nights in Atlantic City. I was excited to hear my friend Mary in Colombia needed a travel companion to visit Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. So here I am, continuing my search for a better beach then any in St. Croix. Also happy to reconnect with Mary whom I visited for a week during my Panama travels. We met up at the airport in Medellin yesterday and spent a night at a nice airport hotel...

Jun 25, 2014 - Days 305 to 313 - Santa Marta and Minca - Columbia

At 9.00pm on Monday 16th June I boarded the night bus (yes, another one!) for the 16 hour trip to Santa Marta on Colombia’s northern, Caribbean, coast. This is one of the longer bus journeys but, fortunately, the bus was very quiet (no music or films!) and I managed to have a good six hours or so of fairly undisturbed sleep. Arriving at the Santa Marta bus station at around 1.00pm on Tuesday 17th June, the first thing that struck me was the heat; it was roasting hot after the relative cool of the air conditioned bus and there was not a...

Apr 23, 2014 - Tayrona National Park, Taganga, Colombia

Wednesday 23rd April 2014 Taganga, Colombia Today we travelled by private bus from the hotel to Tayrona National Park. Once we had picked up our tickets we headed to the drop off point and walked through the forest to lookouts overlooking the Caribbean Sea beaches. The walk was quite hot as the day was sunny and about 35-36C in the morning. We walked through a number of different types of forest with great rock formations that had particular significance to the indigenous inhabitants in the area. On the way we came across 2 young indigenous...

Apr 22, 2014 - Riohacha to Taganga, Colombia (Santa Marta)

Tuesday 22nd April 2014 Riohacha to Santa Marta and Taganga, Colombia We are right up in the northernmost part of Colombia and in the morning today we stopped on the side of the road and had a view of the ocean – the Caribbean Sea – it’s amazing that we have travelled right up from Ushuaia in the southernmost part of South America right up to the north of the continent in about 2 months. Many long days and interesting sights. We drove to near the town of Santa Marta and parked the truck and transferred to minibuses to head to Taganga to...

Feb 28, 2014 - Last days and back to UK 28 Feb - 3 March

Saturday 1 March. After a good night’s sleep and early wake-up I started to plan my day. I met a young couple from Lewes at breakfast and shared a taxi with them into town. I had my ticket for the Cuban Art Gallery from when came here first and that was my main objective of the day. I was happy to have gone there as the art was very interesting and varied with quite a few sculptures also on display. I stayed more than two hours and then strolled towards the Choloclate Museum for a hot chocolate. Disappointingly, they only served cold...

Feb 26, 2014 - Totumo Volcano

We had a fun morning at this volcano. It is only slightly larger than a termite mound - 60 mts tall so quite an unremarkable volcano. The villagers run the events around it as a cooperative and a way of earning a living. You climb some steps to the top and inside the crater is a pool of mud. I was prepared, already wearing my 2-piece but first of all wanted to see where you got scrubbed off afterwards as the guide had described it as 'a swamp'. Anyway, it was part of the large lagoon so Sharon and I climbed the steps and queued up for our...

Feb 17, 2014 - Salt Cathedral and hot springs

A 7 am start to beat the traffic out of Bogota, we made our way to the El Sisga Lagoon, a reservoir about 1.5 hrs from Bogota where we stopped in a restaurant for breakfast. This is the first big meal of the day for Columbians, the second being lunch and just a cup of tea or chocolate in the evening. Big bowls of soup with chunks of meat and vegetables were given to everyone except for me; my soup was a vegetable broth with about .5kg of potatoes followed by hot chocolate and cheese which you dip into the cup - unusual. The chocolate is not...

Feb 14, 2014 - Havana to Bogota

Got up quite leisurely for the first time in weeks and went to change some money for my return at the end of the month. Then had a big ‘sit-in’ at the only manicurist/pedicurist in town as my toes needed revarnishing. I was not v. Hygienic and I did wonder if I had done the right thing but she worked well and I then went back for a shower before checking out so got rid of any effects from the one small towel she used for the whole of Cuba. The taxi came punctually and I got through all the bureaucracy of Cuba quite quickly, with the...

Feb 13, 2014 - Last day

Thursday 13 Feb. 14 Last half day for the group. Another bit of walking to places we missed yesterday and, for those who had gone off on a trip, to fill in for them the places they missed. I decided to do this as it is the last half day with them. After a group lunch and final bye-byes, they set off directly to the airport. And now trying to update finally getting a poor link to internet! Off to Bogota tomorrow

Feb 12, 2014 - In Havana

Wednesday 12 Feb Wonderful Havana! Most of us opted to stay in Havana and not do an optional tour. Felix picked us up at 9 and we set out from our centrally located hotel to visit the major sights in Havana old city. He explained loads to us but also found things we may have missed like old fashioned pharmacies with ceramic jars beautifully displayed on mahogany shelves. We picked up the route I had taken yesterday and ended up in the Old Square – restored with Unesco and government funds only in 2000 – with the best coffee shop in all...

Feb 10, 2014 - To Cienfuegos

Monday 10 Jan Trinidad to Cienfuegos I was happy to leave the ‘casa’ which has not been comfortable and which I reported to the group leader as being unsatisfactory. He contacted Exodus but I’ll follow up o my return. Anyway, we had a nice morning getting to the El Combre national park and doing a short walk to a waterfall where you could swim. I would have like a longer and more challenging hike, but the weather was fine and the scenery very nice. We then drove to Cienfuego a French neoclassical town and very pretty and different, on the...

Feb 18, 2013 - Parque Tayrona
