Mar 9, 2020 - Day 37

I got up at 5:00am and did most of the packing since my flight back to Bogota today is at 1:30pm. At 5:30am the breakfast was served. At 6:00am I left in a taxi with the young men. After about 20 minutes we arrived a rural area. Another man joined us. I was told he is the staff at their private reserve and will be my guide. I asked the young man about the garbage problem I saw everywhere in this area. His explanation is that the Wayuu traditionally throw garbage where they please. Because years ago, it was all organic, there was no problem....

Feb 16, 2020 - Day 16

I waited at the usual bus station to go to Parque la Florida for 30 minutes without any bus. It is a bit strange. Normally there is a bus every 10 to 15 min. I started to think maybe today is Sunday the bus schedule is different. I hailed a taxi. The driver told me that it is true that the bus has much reduced service on Sundays. After I got to the park, the first thing was to use the bathroom. There were lots of people already in the park. When I got out, I noticed that the lens hood was missing. It is a big object and I did not hear...

Feb 15, 2020 - Day 15

It was very cloudy when I got up at 7:00am. Walked around the lodge a bit but hardly saw any birds at all. Went back for breakfast at 8:00am. At 9:00am walked the trail we did yesterday but all those birds were gone. I did see some new species we did not see yesterday: Brown-caped Vireo, Andean Siskin, and a flycatcher that is similar to Social Flycatcher. At lunch I saw the lodge manager and asked him about his teaching last night. He laughed and said he was teaching English, not Spanish. The students are the lodge staffs. Today is...

Feb 14, 2020 - Day 14

Went to dining hall for breakfast at 6:45am. The cook was ready. She brought blackberry juice, hot coco, scrambled eggs, arepa (corn pancake) with fresh cheese and yogurt with granola. It was a big breakfast. By 7:30am the guide called the lodge and told them they were locked outside. Somewhere the office did not notify the park to unlock the gate for them at 6:00am. They will arrive shortly. By 8:00am two young men showed up. The ornithologist Danilo is in late 20th and his friend Philip is about his age. Danilo is what I expected from a...

Feb 13, 2020 - Day 13

These 3 days I was in Parque Chicaque. It was done totally by public transportation. First, I took a TransMilenio bus to a station, then transferred to another one to reach an outside town. Then, according to instruction from the park, I need to wait for the taxi that I made reservation with at a specific location by the bus station. I did not know how long it was going to take me there, left early and arrived 1 hour early. The taxi driver is a young woman who showed up on time at 9:00am. She drove me about 25 minutes to the park entrance....

Feb 12, 2020 - Day 12

I got up as usual at 6:00am once there is light. I have totally got used to the local time zone now. When I got to Museum Chico at 7:15am, it is not open until 8:00am. I found another park nearby with some trees. To my disappointment the only birds I could find are Eared Dove, Great Thrush and a couple of Violet-eared Hummingbirds. Nothing else at all. The Great Thrush was numerous and everywhere. They have taken the place of our crows in the city. Giving Colombia has the most bird species in the world It is concerning to me that Bogota has...

Feb 11, 2020 - Day 11

I am glad that I did not take the offer by Uriel. I took bus to Parque Ecological Matarredonda for only C$20,000 ($6) and it is just as fast on a paved road. The long-distance bus is a small van with 10 passengers maximum. When I got to the park at 9:30am, the staff just opened the door. She told me it is very safe there. I hit on the trail to a small lake. There was nobody. The only sound I could hear was the rustling of the leaves in the wind and occasional bird chirp. Paramo is a biosystem that is above forest line but below permanent...

Feb 10, 2020 - Day 10

It was sunny and would be a good dry day. Got on the bus to Parque la Florida. On Sunday when I took the same bus it was so crowded but today it was not nearly as crowded. I wondered why. I thought it should be another way around. Still, there are a lot for me to learn about Colombian society. At the first pond I immediately found 3 Spot-flanked Gallinules, 2 lessor Yellowlegs, 1 Solitary Sandpiper and 1 Spotted Sandpiper and 4 Blue-winged Teals. Going along I found more Spot-flanked Gallinules in other small ponds. They are quite...

Feb 9, 2020 - Day 9

Today I did not go either Museo National or the Panamo because there is a street fair only on Sundays at a town near Bogota called Usaquen. This is my only chance to visit it. In the morning I took a bus and a taxi to a wetland called Humedal Cordoba. Bogota has 10 large wetlands and this one is recommended on TripAdvisor. I did not see many birds but Greater and Lessor Yellowlegs, Solitary Sandpiper, Bare-faced Ibis, Kingbirds, Summer Tanager and an American Coot plus a few others. The trail is inside some forest and along the wetland. I...

Feb 8, 2020 - Day 8

Got up at 6:00am and caught a bus to Parque la Florida. The bus stop is 4km away from the park entrance. There is no taxi around. I thought I would just walk along the bike path. When I started, I saw a tricycle that seemed like a taxi. It existed in China more than 20 years ago. I hailed one and he took me to the park entrance for about $3 and gave me his phone number. I took a photo of him with the tricycle. It has a name: bicycle Taxi. The park has lots of soccer fields. Many kids and adults were playing in the field already. I heard the...

Feb 7, 2020 - Day 7

Today is my last day at Spanish school. I will tough it out no matter how rude Maria is. Again, somehow she is my teacher for the first 2.5 hours alone. She started by going through some homework she left yesterday. I did it almost all correctly since I already studied these grammars at home. Then, she started drill me on different tenses. I learn these grammars best by myself using an online application. I did not say anything to her but just followed along. At the end of the class I informed her that I do not intend to come to school next...

Feb 6, 2020 - Day 6

Maria was my teacher for the first 2.5 hours. She is a mid-sized very stern woman who reminds me of the head of a monastery for nuns. She is perhaps around 55 years old and has personality of a traditional German woman: very stern, strict and does not like any option that differs from hers. I heard her yelling to other two young teachers. They both seem at least a bit intimidated by her. I asked her about giving back my change for the tuition that I over paid. She obviously forgot about it and told me that it will be given back to me soon....
