Jan 5, 2017 - Colombia – Hacienda Venecia

Slept right through until 7am, so peaceful last night! We met everyone again at breakfast and said our farewells to Russell & Wendy and John & Denise. We have asked if we can listen in once again to some of the coffee tour as there was so much information to absorb. We listened for 1/2 hour or so and then took a walk over to the hostel and further into the farm. What a gorgeous area! We arrived back to the Guesthouse in time for lunch, which again was delicious and then relaxed on the deck. The afternoon brought a soft steady rain so Fero...

Jan 4, 2017 - Colombia – Hacienda Venecia

Buenos Dias! We awoke to birds singing, and the smell of freshly washed air after last night’s rain. So lovely not to wake up to an alarm. Breakfast was hearty with eggs, toast, cereal, juice and, of course, as much coffee (Hacienda Venecia coffee!) as you wish. Today we are attending the coffee tour to learn more about this incredible crop. Following today’s journal, I will share the information we learned on coffee. The first hour was instructional and spent learning where coffee originated, how it is harvested, different characteristics...

Jan 3, 2017 - Colombia – Bogota to Manizales & Hacienda Venecia

We awoke minutes before the alarm at 6:00am. Today we fly to Manizales and from there, on to Manizales for our three day stay on a working coffee farm, Hacienda Venecia. This is one of the areas I have been waiting to experience, El Cafetero, the coffee zone. Victor is early to pick us up and as we are ready we head to the airport. Our flight isn’t until 10:20am, however the hotel suggested we leave at 7:30am, as one never knows what rush hour traffic will be like. We made it in good time by 8:00am, checked in and sat ourselves down to...

Jun 25, 2012 - Coffee - good coffee

Three nights at Hacienda Venecia a coffee plantation near Manizales OMG so beautiful so quiet and the coffee made by the staff on a simple machine even I could drink black the flavour was magnificent. Apparently Colombia exports all of its good coffee it's easier to get good Colombian coffee in Adelaide than it is in Colombia - but the hacienda keeps enough to please its clients. The grounds are as you will see in the photos - the drive down to the hacienda on the other hand was really interesting - a very narrow dirt road with a number of...

Sep 29, 2009 - Manizales and the Eje Cafetera

WoooHoo! Coffee time!A not so quick trip from Cali got us to Manizales in about 8 hours. When we got there we weren´t really prepared or anything. We got the cab driver to take us to the only hostel listed in the Lonely Planet guide book. Which turned out to be full...so we had them inform us where the new one was located two blocks away. Our general lack of organization lead us to inquire at the hostel about how to take a tour at a nearby coffee plantation. How can you come to Colombia without seeing where the best coffee in the world come...

Jul 22, 2007 - Manizales

Manizales is a town situated up in the mountains in the Zona Cafetera region in Columbia. Some people use it as a base to explore some of the surrounding towns. We found it a little dirty, and as a couple of the locals pointed out, unsafe at night. At one point, when we were in search of some cake for our 15th wedding anniversary, a young girl caught up with us to tell us not to walk in that area at night. She actually walked with us for about 4 blocks to find a pastry shop, then advised us to get a cab for the return to the hotel. Also,...
