Aug 1, 2016 - Around Bogota

OK, I've fallen in love with the Colombian pop cycles--paletas. They come in all kinds of flavors. A lot of them have fruit in them. And they are not like the kind you buy at the grocery store or make out of kool-aid. Really yummy. My suitcase finally arrived last night. The clothes I had worn on the plane were heavy and dripping with sweat. So happy to be in new, lighter clothes...albeit still dripping with sweat. After my morning paleta--coconut--B and I got a hop on, hop off bus tour. The first stop was at the Castella de San Felipe,...

Jul 31, 2016 - Old Town

After breakfast, I put on the same clothes I've been wearing since Friday evening and headed out to explore Cartagena. I talked to a guy about taking us on a tour, but Basilio didn't really want to. But, the guy followed us around, chatting us up. I was pretty content taking pictures of this colonial Spanish city. The guide gave Basilio a map of the city, and we started following a self-guided walk around the Old Town. We didn't really make too much progress as I kept wanting to stop to look around a little shop, or take a picture, or get...

Jul 30, 2016 - The Long, Long Journey to Cartagena

Basilio and I were scheduled on the red-eye to Miami, then to Bogota, and finally to Cartagena. My friend Lisa picked us up at 8:30 p.m. It seemed way too early to leave for a midnight flight, but I have grown more and more anxious about trips out of LAX since I moved out to the desert. LA freeways are clearing by that time of night, so we hit little traffic...until we got past the 405. When you reach the 105/405 intersection, you are basically at the LAX airport, so we thought we'd arrived. Suddenly traffic slowed to a drunken crawl. We...

Apr 19, 2016 - On the road to Mompox

After long walk we are back on the truck heading to Mompox it is a full day drive 370 km and takes about 11 hours traveling on some very rough and winding roads. A few bathroom stops and a lunch along the way, on a part of the road we were able to open the roof top seat at the back of the truck and every one got a chance to ride in it. Along the way we did a short stop to play a bit of soccer with some local kids. We had a couple minor injuries two of our players ( Jarno and Lee)torn open some places on their feet so had to do bandages so...

Today it off to the mud volcano about 50km northeast of Cartagena, on the banks of the Cienaga del Totumo. a large lake, but at this time of the year it is mostly dry. The mud is to have therapeutic properties and it quite an experience. Jun 27, 2014 - Days 313 to 315 - Cartagena, Colombia

After a four hour (air conditioned…yippee!) bus journey, I arrived in Cartagena at 2.00pm on Wednesday 25th June and had a pleasant surprise; it was not as hot as I had feared. That said, it was still above 30oC, so warm enough! I found the hostel after being charged an excessive taxi fare (again!) and checked in to find that the dorms had a/c at night…what a result after fans only in Santa Marta. I strolled out to have a look-see and find some food in the late afternoon; eating my set menu of soup and chicken, I suddenly heard someone call...

Apr 27, 2014 - Taganga to Cartagena, Colombia

Thursday 24th April 2014 Taganga, Colombia It’s a rest day today. Up late and had breakfast then updated the blog and chatted to other people in the group, sat around the pool for most of the day, went for a brief walk in the afternoon, then had a rest later in the day, then out for dinner with some others to a really nice restaurant. We had a couple of cocktails and a very good meal then home to bed at around 11:30pm. It was a hot day today, very dry about 36°C. They badly need rain in this town. It hasn’t rained here for seven months and...
