Jan 15, 2015 - A Day of Many Footsteps

Thursday 15 January Weather: Cloudy 8° Steps: 19,953 Yuyuan Gardens was the first stop on our half day tour with Nancy. The gardens were finished in 1577 during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan for his elderly parents. The garden has six main areas over five acres with rocky areas designed to represent mountains and tranquil pond areas. We walked into each area taking photos and learning about the history from Nancy. Some of the buildings were fancy and designed to take in the best of the views. The gardens were very busy and there were a...

Jan 14, 2015 - Arrival in Shanghai

Wednesday 14 January Weather: Rain 9° Steps: 7,230 We arrived into Shanghai on a grey, drizzly day. We met our guide Nancy and driver Joe, then were soon on the hour long journey to our hotel. Our art deco hotel was well appointed with the biggest bed we had ever slept in - almost as big as our whole hotel room in Frankfurt!. We went out for a walk to get some cash - what a mission. We had to go to two different banks and wait in a fairly long queue. but we needed cash for a taxi later so had no choice. After that we went for a walk along...

Nov 19, 2014 - Shanghai

It's been a couple of years since the last time I was in Shanghai and I was keen to see how high the new Shanghai Tower is now. Last time I was here it was level with my room on the 95th Floor of the Jin Mao Tower. It now towers over both the JM and the Shanghai World Finance Centre. I think it's now at full height but not quite completely finished. Had to get picked up for at 6am for a drive to a suplier in Hangzhou then got stuck in the Shanghai traffic for over an hour on the way back making for a 12 hour day. Stayed on the Peoples...

Oct 17, 2014 - Shanghai na 1 maand

Dag allemaal.

Oct 12, 2014 - Shanghai, China, part 1

Shanghai Part 1: Oct 12 to 18, Josh's entry We started our stay in Shanghai with a three a.m. arrival to Jeanne and Craig's house. Both Jeanne and Craig worked at JPA with Dad and we became pretty close friends with them over the course of our stay. Jeanne kindly met us downstairs and led us up to her nice but small apartment. We were exhausted and we immediately crashed in our designated beds which meant Adrienne and I were on the couch. The apartment was a small two bedroom one bathroom, but we made it work. We spent the next morning...

Oct 5, 2014 - Day 9 Friday

Much better sleep here. Beds softer and comfier. Brekky here at the Traders is the best as well. Much more Western on offer. Still stuck to Western. Lol. And cold juices here. Yuummmm. Off to Summer Palace first. The Summer Palace was so beautiful and massive. It also had long walkways between each palace structure with beautiful paintings. We had a short tour of couple palaces and heard stories of the 'Dragon Lady' who was the evil decision maker behind the Emporer and her times as emporess. There was a lake in the middle of all and we...

Oct 5, 2014 - Day 10 Saturday

Great sleep again. Awesome brekky again too. Then off to Great Wall of China. It took longer than expected through traffic and only had 1hr there after 1.5hrs driving. But, can I say, superb and a wonderful experience. We walked up the hill a bit then took a cable car to the top and walked along two Watchtowers (13 & 14). Cable car awesome and wall just magnificent views. Not as good as from Great Wall though. There's enough material to build a wall around the world 1m high and 5m wide. No wonder it is a wonder of the world. Lea and I did...

Oct 5, 2014 - Day 12/13 Monday/Tuesday

Last day and flying home. Got woken this morning to Lea not feeling well and needed to go to doc from the fall. Her head was sore and hurting with a cut. Was frantic and confusing to all but org'd with teachers that I would take her to docs and we would meet them all Beijing airport for flight to Shanghai and then home. We had time so wasn't too bad. A bit panicky and tour leader didn't help much and teachers more unhappy that it was the day going home and stuff, but ya can't help bad luck. The doc next to hotel wouldn't treat foreigners...
