Apr 22, 2015 - Farewell Shanghai

21 April 15 Last day in Shanghai today. We had a very pleasant walk around the Yu Garden today. It’s very picturesque, serene and crowded. A surprise around every corner. Then a stroll around the markets. The usual goods/souvenirs on offer all in a nice characterful atmosphere. We didn’t wander too far as we were scared of getting lost but we bargained hard for a few trinkets. Ended up in Starbucks with a Latte (for me to quaff) and an iced Chocolate for the Dragon Lady, I don't know who gave Hyacinth that nom de plume but she is relishing...

Apr 20, 2015 - Out and about in Shanghai

20 April 15, This morning it was off to the Shanghai Museum for a look around, marvellous building and very positive exhibition spaces. I particularly enjoyed the ceramics, some are from 600BC and are far more complex than what the Romans were making…. The Museum also boasts a nice Tea room with authentic furnishings that made a decent cup of tea so we enjoyed a pot each before walking out to the Peoples Sq. and admiring the musical fountain…. Then off for a wander around the French Quarter and it was all so, well soooo French. Back on the...

Apr 20, 2015 - Arrival in Shanghai

19 April 15. Our flight today was only one hour late, a new “best” for China Eastern Airlines. Access to the Travel Blog page seems to be blocked now, I can’t even log in but I can log onto other sites that the “State” deem suitable. I have sort of found a way around it pro tem… Anyway not a lot happened today, left the hotel at around 0900 and drove to the airport arriving at around 1000 then had to do the usual with passports and get our boarding passes. The security checking today was really rigorous, they seemed concerned with batteries...

Apr 17, 2015 - Shanghai day 2

Another bright and early start to continue our tour of Shanghai. Today our first destination was the Yuyuan Garden, a five acre urban garden designed in the classical Ming Dynasty Garden style. This is a lovely area of temples, buildings and lovely garden areas with water features built in 1559. It managed to give a tranquil feeling despite the hundreds of tourists visiting it. We exited onto a street that would be a classic “Chinatown” area in any world city. Lots of “stuff” to buy! From there we went across the river by ferry going from...

Apr 16, 2015 - Shanghai

Shanghai Day 1 We are back in the beautiful city of Shanghai. It is an architectural wonderland; a wonderful mixture of old Chinese buildings, colonial buildings and massive modern glass structures. We walked along the Bund, a wide elevated boardwalk along the river, heading for the Shanghai Museum. The Bund is lined with Colonial Buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum, not one of the nicest buildings around, is in the Peoples Square surrounded by government buildings. The beautiful artifacts are in rooms on 4 floors and...

The East Zone has been a tourist attraction since 2001 We went to the West Zone which has been opened. Since 2007. This area retains the original style. There are museums, a library, workshops and many tea shops. They have guest houses, hotels and luxury hotels called club...

Apr 9, 2015 - Shanghai

Shanghai is the largest city with a population of 24 million. I don't know how many millions of cars but the government tries to control by the cost of the license plate. It is a one time fee of about $10,000. Getting one is based on the auctioning of only 8,000 per month. We are on the 21st floor right on the river. A gorgeous view! We can see the Shanghai Tower being built from our window. It will be 127 stories, the tallest building in China. It will be a hotel and offices. The Pearl observation tower is also seen from our window. When...

Apr 8, 2015 - Fly the Friendly Skies

Spent the morning enjoying the clear blue skies of Lhasa. Visited the Tibet museum which was interesting and much of it had English translations. Some of the translations were interesting. I wish I could read Chinese so I would know what Mao wrote to the Dalai Lama. Of course most of the information was from the Chinese government point of view then the Tibetan view point. So our flight time to Shanghai was set for 15 minutes later than the original time. We played musical gates before they finally decided where we should get on the plane....
