Jun 10, 2013 - Nineteenth, Twentieth, and Twenty-first Week

So the last couple of weeks have been that hardest weeks by far. Even though morning trainings have gotten easier, we go a quick run and Qi Qong in the morning rather than running and excersicing. But the overall fitness of the other classes have increased. Buckets are no longer just carrying water up stairs. We carry water up 353 stairs 6 times, then sprint up 130 stairs twice, hop up twice, hop up twice on one leg, frog jump up twice and then crawl down the stairs we just frog jumped up. Each step and hop has to be two steps, we are never...

May 19, 2013 - Sixteenth, Seventeenth, and Eighteenth Week

So turns out that our old Shifu is most likely not coming back. Our new Shifu, which is the same as the subsitute Shifu that we've been having is good but still needs to learn more about being a teacher and a Shifu, which will only come in time. So we are doing our best and trying to help him along as well. Everything has been practiaclly the same. Training getting harder, learning new forms, resting and relaxing when we can. There are now about 20 foreign students here, some coming and going, others staying. Getting ready for our...

May 17, 2013 - Back Up north

"Vacation" was over, headed back up north. The snow was long gone (luckily) and it was starting to get alot greener than it was when I left. The weekend I got back it was the birthday of 2 students at the academy. So to celebrate we went hiking, almost got bit by snakes, and went on a donkey cart ride and drank beers in the rain. Finally followed by a fat meal and beer pong. Very glad to get back to training again, my back is/was doing much better and since it was nice out we got to do the outdoor conditioning much more (stairs w/ water...

Apr 27, 2013 - Fourteenth and Fiftheenth Week

The weeks just keep getting harder and harder. Our shifu is actually away on family matters so we are being trained by the older of the kids shifu's. He is a very good shifu, talented and keeps us working hard. These past two weeks have actually been the hardest so far. We have been doing more running, stairs, partner forms over and over again. Although we don't know when our old shifu is coming back, we thought it was only going to be a week but seems longer than that. Although I am sick right now, stuffy nose and slight fever, I hope that...

Apr 13, 2013 - Twelfth and Thirteenth Week

So the last two weeks were both pretty tough, always looking for time to rest. We are training outside mostly everyday now at least for a little bit so we get to enjoy the fresh air and sun shine, but have to train harder so to some its might be a win-lose situation but I see it as a win-win situation. I completed the first spear form and started the second spear form. After which I am not sure what’s next. I still have a sword to learn and my twin battle axes (not what you think normal axes look like, they are quite different), but I also...

Apr 1, 2013 - Eleventh Week and Living Conditions

So the weeks are all starting to blend together. It's hard to even remember what I did in training last week, everything seems so familiar and similar. I did finish my three-section staff form and started on one of my spear forms. I will be learning two spear forms, the first one is very basic while the second one looks really nice, can't wait to start learning it. Last week we also started sparring again which is awesome, great training especially for stamina. One day I sparred for 45 minutes none stop, only once for switching opponents...

Mar 24, 2013 - Tenth Week

Last week was a week of sickness for me. I was out Monday, Thursday and Friday. On the two days I was available to train I started learning my three-section staff form, which is going quite well. Not hitting myself in the head anymore, unless I really mess up. However on Tuesday we had a test in front of our Shifu's, our previous test was delayed until then. I tested for all my forms: two beginning fist forms, two twin hook sword forms, the whip, and the Guan Dao form. All went well, only messed up on one of the fist forms. Overall got the...

Mar 18, 2013 - Ninth week

This past week was nothing special at all. Our Shifu was away at his father's home for a family matter so we were supervised by the kid's Shifu. Basically was normally training with a little more rest than normal but was good because half the people got sick with stomach illness and soar throats. I got a the cold, throat and nose, on Friday and had to take today off but am feeling a lot better and will be ready to continue training tomorrow where I will start to learn my three-section staff form. On Sunday we were surprised 30 minutes...

Mar 10, 2013 - Eighth Week

Nothing too exciting this week around. Continued practice with my Guan Dao (been spelling it wrong the past couple of times). Started four tricks (spins) with the three-section staff. Found out I have to get over the fear of hitting myself. I've hit myself in the back of the head about ten times in a day and in the nose about three times. Good thing I was using my Shifu's three-section staff because it is lighter so there was only pain. If I used mine which is a lot heavier I might have knocked myself out a couple of times. We also got two...

Mar 3, 2013 - Seventh Week

So the performance ended up being canceled so we just trained instead, as usual haha. Still working on my Kwan Do which I must admit is very heavy and swinging it around is getting better, but after practicing my form 10 times my shoulders, especially my right, is killing me but I keep pushing on, switching to a lighter one for a few times than back to the heavier one. All the Chinese kids are back now from their holiday so the academy is lively and noisy. They are all really fun to play with and just make you smile. It is a great time and...

Mar 3, 2013 - Day 3 Travel

Breakfast at the hotel was even better than expected. Crazy buffet style food, mix of Asian and western breakfast. Lotta German business people staying at the hotel. Took some photo's from different windows out of the hotel of Changchun, looks much less like a post apocalyptic city or video game during the day. There's even people outside on the streets. Driver and translator (Jasmine) came to pick me up from the hotel around 10 am. Jasmine begun to teach me Chinese on the way to the academy. The driver doesn't speak much English so she...

Mar 2, 2013 - Travel Day 2

Landed in Changchun/ Should have arranged for a taxi/shuttle to the hotel before arriving here. All the taxi's here can't understand the hotel I'm trying to go to and besides that seem real sketchy. Really wish I spoke Chinese right about now. Most of the Airport is shutting down at this point. Very glad I have a Global Phone as I was able to contact the hotel and have them send a taxi for me. In the meanwhile had a lovely conversation w/ 2 to 3 dudes who were following me around the airport, went and stood by a Police officer, they...
