Aug 12, 2017 - Suzhou and Tongli water town

Our journey to Suzhou was only around 25 minutes thanks to the bullet train. However given we had to queue for 30 minutes for the tickets itself and then wait another hour for the train, it was still quite a long journey. We checked into our cute little boutique hotel and settled down for the evening. The next day we decided to go to a small town outside of Suzhou called Tongli. It's quite famous for being a 1000 year old water town. The town itself was beautiful with cute little waterways for streets and lots of ancient houses which you...

May 3, 2017 - Suzhou - Our 'Shopping Trip' Begins

April 19th What a LONG day today was – again! We really ought to have got in some training for it! Not sleeping well, so when 05:30 comes around it's something of a relief to get up. (Tip for travellers: I purchased some Vietnamese 3-in-1 packets of coffee called 'Vinacafe' before leaving Canada and it is SO much better than the Nescafe and Cow Dust we find in most hotel rooms and no, I don't get a kick-back from the coffee makers for the plug!) So a brief explanation of our 'Shopping Trip'. We had failed to notice within the...

Oct 24, 2016 - Shanghai - Suzhou

We checked out of the hotel at 9am and headed out on our first official visit of the tour to the State Shanghai Museum. On the way we crossed over the Wusong river which runs into the Huang Po across which the new Shanghai city was built. The museum, located in the landscaped park of the Peoples Square across from the Government Building on Renmin Avenue is built in the shape of an ancient bronze cooking vessel called a 'ding'. The building with a round top and a square base, symbolizing the ancient Chinese perception of the world as "round...

Oct 28, 2015 - Back To The UK

Lovely sunrise for our last morning. Cases packed & down to the foyer before breakfast. On the coach for the last time & out to the airport for our 12.30 am flight back to Amsterdam. Time at the airport to say goodbye to Raymond who had done such a great job organising & looking after our group before checking in & suffering the queues at Immigration & Security. Only an old fashioned Jumbo plane this time for the ten & a half hour flight to Schipol. Then a three hour wait before the final leg back to Heathrow where we were glad to see Bill...

Oct 27, 2015 - Suzhou & Back To Shanghai

It really was a lovely hotel with the softest bath robes I've ever had. I even got to ride one of their two Segway machines around the spedtacular hotel foyer. A pity we only spent less than twelve hours their before hitting the road back to Shanghai. It is the only hotel I have seen with a tennis court & a putting green on the roof of their restaurant building. Back on the coach again & off to visit one of Suzhous famous gardens on the way. Not sure which one we went to but it certainly was a lovely place to wander around, very typical of...

Apr 29, 2014 - Suzhou to Shanghai

28th and 29th April Yesterday disappeared with the transfer from Guilin to Shanghai. Our flight was delayed at Guilin and our arrival at Pudong airport was at a distant gate. We didn't leave the airport until about 3:30. We drove by coach directly to Suzhou which is about two hours from the centre of Shanghai. Shouzou is a canal city and is famous for a number of UNESCO world heritage cultural gardens. This morning started with a boat ride on the canals within the old city of Suzhou. A number of original houses have been renovated. From the...

Oct 27, 2013 - Suzhou

Day 11: Sunday, October 26th We arrived in Suzhou (pronounced Sue Choe) on Saturday evening, went straight to dinner and then to our hotel. For once we got to bed at a reasonable hour. There was no point in unpacking anything because our bags were going back on the bus first thing in the morning. Our day in Suzhou was to be short but very sweet. Sunday morning after an early breakfast we were dropped off at one of the more famous of the 9 classical gardens in Suzhou. Called the Lingering Garden, it has been recognized as a World Heritage...

Jan 3, 2013 - New Year Number 1

New Years Eve was spent playing games with great friends and our wonderful boys. A really nice finish to an amazing year. The next afternoon we headed into a hotel in central London right near the Tower bridge. David and Emma joining us the next morning for a day on the double decker buses seeing all of the sites, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Shakespeares globe, St Paul’s and Westminster Abbey. Again the history and beauty was striking. The time had come to head for home the next morning, Ben threw up in the taxi on the way to the airport...

Dec 31, 2012 - 4 Days in Paris

We made our way on the Paris metro to our hotel. We had booked one near the Eiffel Tower that said that some rooms had views of the tower. We weren’t expecting much but were amazed to open the curtains in our room to a perfect view of one of the worlds most famous landmarks. We walked down to it that afternoon and planned our ascent for the morning. As night fell the tower came alight and each hour on the hour it sparkles, we just sat in the windows watching and laughing as Matty repeatedly pointed out that the “Awful” Tower is in this...

Dec 27, 2012 - An English Christmas

Our time with Emma, David and Flynn was fantastic. After such a big year we were very happy to settle in Alcester and village way of life. The weather was cold and at times wet, the boys were happy all playing together so we kept it pretty simple. We spent a nice afternoon walking around Stratford upon Avon, the home of Shakespeare. The highlight of the pre Christmas time was a Saturday afternoon pub crawl through the main street of Alcester, beautiful old pubs and quality English Ales, very different beer to home and China – each one more...
