Jan 18, 2004 - 13 hours in Hong Kong

Got to Hong Kong about 8:00 am local time after a little more than 16 hours on the plane. Pretty tired and pretty gross but, since I want to acclimatize to Australian time as soon as possible I tried to stay awake. Went to the city for a few today and walked around. Haven't been stared at quite like that ever as far as I can tell. Interesting to be 5'9" and taller than 90% of the population. Unfortunately, it was Sunday morning (not exactly a peak tourist time) and I couldn't find any restaurants who would take anthing but cash. So, I...

Colin's World Tour

Nov 30, 2003 - Hong Kong

We arrived in Hong Kong by bus unsure of what to expect. We had all heard innumerable stories of Hong Kong's lights and hustle, but our impressions of Hong Kong were definitely changed during our stay in China's most commercialized City. The strange duality that is the relationship between Hong Kong Province (very capitalist; ceded to China in 1997) and the People's Republic of China (quasi-communist) is actually quite staggering. After being in the depths of China, the difference between the two areas is like night and day. For three...

World Trip 03/04

Nov 25, 2003 - We arrive in Hong Kong

As fans of theme parks you would expect us to be able to cope with a bus trip from an airport to a hotel. Not today! The flight from London was very smooth (Garry), long and hot (Clare). We were surprised to find that British Airways had done the decent thing and put small screens on seat backs, which made the journey more pleasant. A good choice of films, Notting Hill, Calendar Girls, Charlies Angels and American Pie the Wedding kept us entertained. Hong Kong Airport is excellent, 15 minutes after getting off the plane we were through...

Nov 15, 2003 - Arrive Hong Kong

Our primary purpose in coming here was to see old friends since we were going to be "close". These are friendships started in the late 1960's when I traveled there and to Taiwan on work assignments. Later, when we lived in Malaysia, we would visit with these folks on our way through. Again in 1990's, when I worked a project in Suzhou, China over a period of three years, I would go through Hong Kong to get there in order to visit these same people.

Aug 10, 1976 - Hong Kong

Went into town on the bus this morning and went straight to ANZ. Got some money transferred to Tokyo and the rest of my account to London - so no more worries? Then to Cathay Pacific to book seats tomorrow - that's ok. The rest of that morning we spent looking around the shops and had lunch in one of the department stores. Back to the hotel to pick up the cameras, then back into town and caught the tram up to Victoria Peak. Magnificent view but unfortunately it was very hazy. Nevertheless we took a few feet of film with our new movie...

Aug 9, 1976 - Hong Kong

Had breakfast in our room and then caught the bus into Central to see if Ian's money had come through. Forgot his passport so made 4 trips on the double decker. We saw a bit of Hong Kong on the way -had lunch in a little Chines restaurant. Ended up spending a bit of money today. We bought ourselves a movie camers, a wide-angle lens for Ian's camera, some filters and a calculator. Very pleased with our purchases. Stayed up late again watching TV. There are about 5 channels here but not all are in English.

Aug 8, 1976 - Hong Kong

Fantastic city to land in after dark. The plane landed on a runway in the middle of the harbour and all you can see are lights from all the high-rise buildings surrounding. Plaza Hotel is a fabulous hotel - pretty pricey too. We're up on the 21st floor so we have quite a good view. We have a colour TV in our room too, so decided to have a rest for the day. Even ordered dinner in our room. Despite the price the food wasn't of high standard. Didn't get to bed till late - sat up watching TV.
