Oct 11, 2015 - Hong Kong - A city of contrasts

Hong Kong -- The name evokes shoguns, shipping routes and Marco Polo to me as a child. Today's city never stops, it is a blaze of neon lights and concrete, high rises out of architecture magazines set amidst jumbled rows of dilapidated low rises and corners crammed with shops selling every conceivable widget/gadget you've imagined! From exclusive Prada or Dior stores gleaming in the sun to elderly women sqatting on street corners slicing vegetables. On streets life goes on side by side, for the struggling or successful block by block, mile...

Pete checked in from Hong Kong and everything is going just fine. Today is Turnaround Day on the ship but he expected to be able to leave the ship for a while to stretch his legs and get something to eat. He posted a couple of pictures from activities on the ship over the past couple days.

Today was Turnaround Day on the ship so a new group of cruisers arrived. Pete had the usual schedule of drills, rehearsals, welcome aboard shows, and parades. Everything is going well. A few crew members have bought saxophones for themselves and Pete is giving them private lessons so that is something new and different. He is enjoying the lessons very much.

Oct 2, 2015 - Impressions of Hong Kong: The Bling is Blinding

Back in the mid-80s I read the series of novels by James Clavell that were historical fiction about the rise of Hong Kong beginning with the British Portuguese traders, through the Opium Wars of the mid 1800s and continuing into present times. Collectively called Asian Saga – Shogun, Tai-Pan, Gai-Jin and two others Those books stuck with me and I got some kind of fascination with Hong Kong and how the British figured out how to drug everyone in coastal China with opium sales to finance the Western world’s demand for tea. And the seafaring...

The ship was in Hong Kong for Turn Around Day and Pete visited Hong Kong Disneyland with a group of friends. They had a great time getting off the ship and visiting the Hong Kong version of the "Happiest Place on Earth!" Many of the attractions are exactly like their counterparts in Florida or California. He had an interesting story to share about the ship's departure from the port in Hong Kong, while under the command of an interim Captain, who was serving as Captain for the first time. Just as they were pulling out of the port, a...

Pete had a good visit in Hong Kong. Today was a Turn Around Day so a new group of cruisers arrived on the ship. He posted several pictures from Hong Kong but a number of them appear to have been taken on the ship, either before or after they were in port. There seems to be a "panda" theme going on in their recent celebrations!

Today was Turnaround Day on the ship so a new group of passengers will be coming aboard. During the day, however, Pete was able to visit Hong Kong Disneyland, where they were celebrating the park's 10th anniversary! He also sent some pictures from what appears to be a party on the ship that might have had a "Pirates" theme and it looks like some of the girls picked up pirate swords at Disney as props for the party! All in all, things are going well for Peter. As of today he has traveled 41,850 miles since he left Indianapolis 9 weeks ago.

Sep 17, 2015 - Stop over in Hong Kong

The day had come - 16 September 2015. After only two weeks planning and organising I am at the International airport in Cairns heading to Hong Kong. All the necessary arrangements in place for me to be away for an extended time. Flying from Cairns to Hong Kong direct and an Overnight stop in HK and a 11 hour flight to Vancouver. I had been to Hong Kong about 40 years ago when Joules and I were on our way home from our 2 year working holiday in Britain. What a different place it is now. I suspect that the population may have doubled...

Today was Turnaround Day on the ship so Peter had his regular responsibilities, including playing a "Welcome Aboard" show and participating in a parade. He did have an opportunity to leave the ship for awhile and the picture he posted looks like the inside of a mall. His usual habit is to get something to eat and stretch his legs a little bit and it seems like he was able to do that today!

Aug 27, 2015 - Bonkers For Honkers

Hong Kong was a breath of fresh air after 3 weeks on the mainland. Well maybe not literally as she has a few air quality issues of her own but it was great being able to trade censored internet that wasn’t always reliable with ridiculously fast internet; hawking and spitting for signs cautioning against such a filthy practice; signage in only Mandarin to signage in Cantonese and English; no queues, pushing and shoving to orderly queues, please and thank you’s. We were beside ourselves. It was great getting our travel confidence back too....
