Zhuhai is a garden -style seashore tourist city, where colorful flowers bloom all year round, and trees and grass are luxuriant as far as the eye can see. The entire city was built as planned. On both sides of even roads are sweeping grasslands with flowers and a variety of trees. In 1999, Zhuhai was granted "the International Award for Best Practices in Improving the Living Environment" by United Nations Center for Human Settlement and was the only winner of this award in China. the Zhuhai fishing girl was the first large-scale seaside...Jump to full entry
Nov 24, 2010 - Happy Thanksgiving!
I know, I know... I haven't written or called for so long. I've deserted you all. I apologize. It's not I don't want to write...it's just that I wasn't ready to leave my home when I left, and writing was just too unbearable, too hard. Now, I've adjusted finally, rest at ease, however, my life is full of work, work, work. And every chance I get to write, instead becomes a perfect opportunity to sleep. I live in Beijing now. I'm working at a UNDP (United Nations Development Program) Organization called the "Tumen Secretariat". It sounds...Jump to full entry
Jun 13, 2010 - Almost 2 Months Later....
Hey All! So sorry for my long long delays in writing. I have been home for two weeks now and I am finally feeling like myself once again. The last two months of school were very busy and full of things to do and people to see and so I didn't have much time for writing, but most of all I was so homesick that if I had tried to write (which I did a few times) it would have come out as sad and depressing and whiny and not how I want you to understand China from me. But now....I can look back (after two weeks of recovery) and really reflect on...Jump to full entry
Apr 16, 2010 - 1 and a half more months
Hey All, I only have 1.5 more months to go. Yay! Then I am home. With this in mind I have kicked my Chinese study into high gear. Whoohoo! This morning I took my first day of rock climbing class. All in Chinese. I understood about 80%. I'm feeling not too bad about this. Jeeya-yo. It means keep it up, or literally fill up the tank. I've decided that people who keep really diligent blogs just have way too much time on their hands. Between mid-terms and studying and playing, it takes a lot for me to sit down and write. Let me just give you...Jump to full entry
Apr 15, 2010 - Adventure with Katrina......
I am horrible at blogging this semester. So much. I don't want to lose it in the dark hole of my brain. The brain is truly a fascinating thing, isn't it? Just reach up and touch your head for a second...I just did. It's smaller than a basketball and yet it is so full of everything. In Chinese culture there is a great respect for the interconnectedness of the body. How what you eat affects all of your organs, how your mood affects your fitness, how pain in your foot triggers tension in your heart, ect. ect. At first it all sounds like...Jump to full entry
Nov 26, 2009 - Thankfulness
Hello All, Wow, time here seems to fall away so fast. Already it is the end of November and in only about one more month from today I will be done with the first semester. Holy Moly. I haven't written for awhile because I've been busy and just haven't found the right mood or time to think about home. My professor warned me that at about this time I would start to feel the homesickness set in, but in October I didn't believe him. Well...I guess it has. ;-) Especially on this Thanksgiving, I would love to tap my shoes and magically be...Jump to full entry
Nov 16, 2009 - Mommy!!
Mommy!!!! Thank you sooo sooo much for my package!! My mom sent me a huge package with enough Christmas presents for all of my friends here in UIC plus the whole rest of the school. Hehe. :) But no worries because all of the other exchange students send their thanks because they are going to use some of it for their friends because they don't have gifts either. THANKS MOM from all the Minnesota exchange students here!!! (ESPECIALLY ME) Also, I have a sweet new jacket she sent too. You are the best ever, Mom. It feels like Christmas in my...Jump to full entry
Nov 9, 2009 - B-Day, Halloween, Surfing, Macau
Sooo much has happened once again since my last message... My friend Katrina had a birthday party BBQ by the beach last Thursday, so I will post a few pictures from that. :) I hadn't realized before these past two weeks how spread out Zhuhai is, but it is full of coast, and lots of islands, and it is super spread out. One end to the other by bus is more than 2 hours! Whoo! Big...of course...it's China. So yes'm, we had a BBQ on an island about 20 min from campus. It was delicious. I ate a whole barbecued squid, and we played on the rocks,...Jump to full entry
Nov 1, 2009 - Smelling the Roses: Doing my favorite things
Hello! Wow. Much has happened in Zhuhai since I last updated you on the comings and goings of my life. Mostly these past two weeks I have gotten into a pretty regular routine of going to class, reading for class, helping my friends with their English papers, eating eggplant, tofu, and spinach at every meal, swimming, running, and playing basketball. It's awesome. Without a job and expensive living costs stressing me out, I've really been able to enjoy the college life and smell the roses, without getting too homesick yet. Yet. :) So here...Jump to full entry
Oct 23, 2009 - Latest Happenings.
Hi All, So last time we talked I got you all caught up on Macau and everything. It has been two weeks since then, though, and a lot has been going down. First off, however, there is a very important message I need to announce. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM！！！！ My mom is the best mom in the whole-wide world. You should all be jealous. ;) So, the past two weeks...where to start, where to start? I've actually spent a good part of the last two weeks figuring out my plans for the upcoming year, and I'm really surprised by how smoothly everything has been...Jump to full entry
Sep 26, 2009 - Adventures!!
Wow. I have had the best most perfect past 48 hours. Where to start, where to start? I just got back from a day long mountain climb and I've uploaded a few of the pictures. We climbed one of the mountains close to Zhuhai. It was really fun and just my kind of thing. There is a core group of outdoor adventurers here in Zhuhai and it was so fulfilling and exciting to find people here in China who love to do something I love to do so much. So today we climbed a mountain. I'm not experienced at climbing, and I was happy because it was not too...Jump to full entry
Sep 23, 2009 - Keeping you updated...
Hey All, Things are all and all going really well here. I've been doing so much that I haven't had time to write and in fact I have class in 40 minutes so I don't have much time to write now either. Here's a highlight of the most recent events since my birthday on Friday. 1. On Sunday afternoon I went to Gongbei which is an ENORMOUS shopping center right on the border between Guangdong Province and Macau. It was really interesting. We took the bus for an hour to get there and it was packed and a girl in front of me got carsick and puked...Jump to full entry
