I got up when the alarm rang this morning, feeling like something that the cat would not even both with, let alone drag home!! Not enough sleep for sure, and feeling pretty stressed out. Blue Sky did not arrive on time, and without his phone, I could not call the Consulate to get things under way. I could only make a local call from my landline, so that was no good to me. I did manage to call Nicole, to see if she could bring me my Foreign Expert Certificate, so that I could take it to Guangzhou with me. I felt that I needed as much...Jump to full entry
May 14, 2011 - Guangzhou-Not What I Expected
"They're gonna help you." Jack had told me when I asked him to call China and make a reservation for the first two nights. He also wrote down the Guangzhou hostel's name, address and directions in Mandarin. Jack is my colleague at work and lived in China until he was eleven. Lucky. He seemed bemused at my terror over communication. I almost didn't come to China at all because I was apprehensive about the language difficulties I might experience. It hasn't been as bad as I'd thought but I'm not getting overconfident. The worst might be yet...Jump to full entry
Heading to Guangzhou this afternoon. We will leave at 3pm, so I will need to be at the bus station before then. I had a message from Alison, who will be speaking in the competition tomorrow, and I will meet her at the back gate at 2.15. At least going away just for the night, means not much to pack, although there always seems to be more than I expect. But by the time I add a book, my knitting, spare clothes, and toiletry items, it adds up. Alison and I got a bus down town, and first, before heading to the bus station, I went into the Pearl...Jump to full entry
Mar 21, 2011 - Bus to Guangzhou, for a visit and overnight stay.
Off to Guangzhou today, so an early start was called for. The alarm rang at 6.30, and we left here just before 8am. Our bus was leaving for Guangzhou at 8.40, and we arrived in plenty of time. On arrival at Guangzhou bus station, we walked over to the train station precinct, and seeing the crowds, decided to go and have some lunch at KFC first, and we walked right over outside the station area, to try and avoid noise and crowds. We had just walked in, when Mary, a girl who works here, and sometimes rides with me to the new campus, walked...Jump to full entry
Feb 1, 2011 - Guangzhou
After a mild taste of China with Hong Kong, we hit the mainland. Guangzhou is a really modern city in China, we're talking around 20 million people living and working here, the place is in perpetual construction, the result is ultra modern high rises all over! We stayed with an old friend of Charlie's - Vincent and his wife for almost a week and they were fantastic hosts! A huge Thank You and Merci to them both!! Vincent speaks Cantonese and Emily speaksMandarin so we got a real insight into the culture which was amazing! It was of course...Jump to full entry
Jan 31, 2011 - From Davao, back to China, via Manila.
I had the alarm set for 8am, and I got up, made coffee and finished my packing. I went downstairs to have a final check of emails, just before 9am. Sofie and Jun were there just before 9.30, so we loaded in the luggage, and drove out to the airport. It was only about a twenty minute drive, although Sofie laughed at Jun, when he nearly turned off on a road that goes to where the airport used to be!! Only passengers can enter the terminal, so I said goodbye to Sofie and Jun outside, then headed in to find the check in counter. I had to wait...Jump to full entry
Nov 11, 2010 - I'm Not An Amimal!
China has a staring problem. Everywhere I go people stare. Old people, young people, people with elephantitus even stare. Well I get the impression they would if I had seen someone with elephantitus. Last night a group of us went out for dinner in a major entertainment district and I had people take photos of me when they thought I wasn’t looking. A German couple I was with were stopped so that a local girl could get a picture taken with them. But it’s a small price to pay… The train journey across the border couldn’t have been better. All...Jump to full entry
Oct 15, 2010 - Back to Guangzhou, for speaking competition.
I did not sleep well last night, so am feeling like a washed out rag this morning. The class was very small, with only eight girls turning up. It seems that many of them have colds, and they blame the changing weather. I wonder when girls who are studying nursing will accept that colds are caused by bacteria, not necessarily by weather conditions. We did have quite an enlightening conversation though. Not many of the girls had managed to find information about health support in China, but three found some stuff to share. Linda did not find...Jump to full entry
Oct 10, 2010 - Off to Guangzhou by train with Bill.
This morning, when I got up Bill had already gone. He wanted to go out to the new campus to welcome a relative. His uncle's young sister-in-law is arriving today, to do the same nursing course as Bill did. And she is hoping to get into the international nursing programme. Of course, this will depend on her English score, on the college entrance exams. Bill called me at lunch time, to let me know that he would be eating lunch out at the new campus, so that was very thoughtful of him. He is a very kind and considerate person. I got some...Jump to full entry
Oct 8, 2010 - Mainland China
A quick update from mainland China. We just finished 400km of riding over the last four days and are loving China so far. The roads are wide and in perfect shape and the traffic is light (once we leave the larger towns). The riding has been relatively flat with small hills here and there so we are covering the same distance in 7hrs that took us up to 10hrs to complete in India. We arrive at our destination with much more energy than we did in India which is good because it can take an hour to communicate that you want a room. The MO is to...Jump to full entry
Jun 4, 2010 - So long for now, Barb and Andy. Safe travelling.
Barb has been doing the writing for my journal, so now she is off home, and the job falls back to me. But thanks for a job well done, Barb. Up at just after 8am this morning. When I got up, Barb had half of their bedding on the line, and the other lot in the machine, even though I told her that I would deal with it after they were gone. She is a good friend, that is for sure. They had everything ready to go, and Rony was to arrive by 9.15, to help get the luggage down the steps. He was here at 8.55, and neither Barb nor I were dressed, but...Jump to full entry
