Oct 8, 2009 - 24 RMB

A dad with a little girl dreams of easy solutions for hair care. After washing/blow drying and combing Hannaiyah's a few times, I knew without a doubt I appreciated anyone with a gift for doing hair to help me. Coming to China our big worry was there would be shop to go to and Neema and I would have to find the joy for at home hair care. Well to our major surprise Neema came across a place where they accepted the challenge and we quickly signed up for multiple visits. For 24RMB or 3 U.S. dollars we can get our hair completed done. It's the...

Sep 30, 2009 - RoadTrip Weekends

Roadtrip weekend. We were determined to get to the water caves this weekend after missing during the Senyang trip so we made it our first stop during our 2 day trip. Benxi water caves are navigatable by boat and journey takes about 1 hour as you go through the caves and back to the opening. Inside rock have formed so many different shapes that resemble animals and nature. China has a way of fabricating things so we at first started to have doubts this was real but after riding for 40 minutes through the cave we realized this was bigger than...

Sep 15, 2009 - Shenyang

We ventured out for our first overnight trip 4 hours away in a city name Shenyang. It is the captial of the province we currently live in. The city triple the size of Dalian about 15 million people and the pollution was very heavy. Hannaiyah was super excited to stay in a 4 star hotel and we wisked around to various sites. First stop was the Imperial Palace which was built in the 1400's before the much bigger Bejing Imperial palace. Walking through the alley ways a many walls within walls I saw firsthand how this could be a city within a...

Sep 6, 2009 - Typical Shopping Trip

As I arrived home today I saw my little 10 year old walking with our recyclable shopping bag down the path towards the car. The exchange went like this "Where are you headed to", I asked "I'm going to the open market to buy groceries. Mr. Yu Yong will drive me there", she replied "Do you have enough money", I asked "Yes, I think I have enough, Mom gave me the shopping list", she said. And with that she strolled to the car and headed out on her way. I was smiling from ear to ear seeing my girl show confidence to take her first solo shopping...

Sep 3, 2009 - Family has Arrived!

I found myself daydreaming throughout the summer about the sounds Hannaiyah’s voice would make in her pink bedroom. I had to pinch myself when I finally got to see her sleep in her bed. She likes to leave her curtain open and the window cracked so she can hear the sounds from the amusement park and see the ocean and city view she has. Neema gave her seal of approval to the new space and the transformation of the house into a home has begun. We have kept a fast pace this first week sort of by design. The little one starts school next week...

Aug 22, 2009 - English in China

Who would have thought in China I would find a beach bar playing reggae and me posing next to a Bob Marley picture. I have a local dive bar walking distance to my house where I sit, relax and enjoy the music. A number of the Intel employees chose the Xing Hai Square area as home and the last few weeks we have decided to get together during our weekends. I have met a few people inside and outside of work and the common bond has been English. Brooklyn Bar is a local pizzeria that serves New York style pizza and cheesecake. About 90% of the...

Aug 9, 2009 - Island Weekend

Friday some of my friends gathered at Arturo and Marie’s house for a spaghetti dinner. They are from Arizona and we have spent time bonding since I have been here. It always is a treat to get a non-Chinese tasting meal every once in a while and the dinner did not disappoint. I woke up at 4am to head off on a camping trip to Gupai Island. My mental image going was of a deserted island that Intel was chartering a boat to, not sure why I thought that. I ended up getting quite a unique and memorable experience and was happy about every...

Aug 2, 2009 - 30th Birthday

Turning 30 caused me to reflect on my 20's but not to much. I decided to relax and do some things that would make me happy on my big day. So I will give the blow by blow account of the day. I started planning the day before by going to buy a fishing pole. I need one for a camping trip I am taking next week but I thought I should wake up early on my 30th and enjoy the full day. I can walk to the ocean from my house so I decided to start my morning by walking to the pier and do some fishing. The old men by the sea greeted me with a nod as I...

Jul 28, 2009 - Korea

I got in the mindset of Korea during the week by eating Korean food in restaurants and on the streets. I plunged into the world of street vendors this week and my stomach survived just fine. To me the fruits and foods are the same quality and about half the costs from the stores and restaurants. I ate grilled squid on a stick which I will try again many times and this great stir fried potatoe dish. I would describe the scene as mini-restaurants on the street with people standing instead of sitting while they eat. For me I get to see the...
