Feb 14, 2017 - Beijing - around the centre

Good day everyone, I decided, I'm not writing about today as we really didn't do too much apart from walking around the city really. However, I also decided to give some information about Beijing, China, the people, prices, etc. In case someone wants to come here. I will also add the lovely scorpion and bug photos from the market. Where she'll I start? Let's write about the people a bit. My very first meeting with the local Chinese people was a really indecisive moment. On the plane they were really pushy, a bit loud and how they...

Feb 13, 2017 - Beijing - The Great Wall of China

Good afternoon from Beijing. Today wasn't an easy day. We woke up at 6am, got ready by 6.40 for our pick up. They first took us to an other hostel where we had our breakfast - scrambled egg, bacon, sausage, toasts and hash brown. The bacon wasn't really bacon and the sausage wasn't exactly looking good but it was tasty and that's what mattered. As it was only two of us we were a bit surprised if we are going to have a private tour but as the bus arrived, we had 21 of us to see the Great Wall today. Our travel buddies were from the...

Feb 12, 2017 - Beijing 1st day - Forbidden city

Hello, I'm back again, this time I finally got to Beijing. I hopped on a plane 2days ago at 3.30am as you all know. I got off at 3pm Beijing time (which is 8 hours ahead of UK time). I thought I'll be adventurous and instead of taking the taxi, I will take the public transport. That was an idea I have already checked out while I was in Dubai so Inhad all details what to catch and how to get there. I didn't calculate though that I got off at terminal 3 and the express train which was my first transportation was at terminal 3. I thought, ok I...

Oct 31, 2016 - Beijing - Great Wall

We got off to a great start with an early breakfast and set off to the Badaling section of the Great Wall of China at Juyong Pass. After fighting a little traffic it was smooth sailing as we were going out of the city against traffic. The trip out to the Great Wall was to take a little over an hour but since we were making great time and the temperatures were still a little chilly, we decided to sneak in an indoor activity before attempting to conquer the Wall. On the way, we took a little time to appreciate the intricacies of the quality...

Oct 30, 2016 - Beijing - City

After enjoying the amenities and hospitality of the Loong Palace Hotel including it's extensive breakfast menu which we thoroughly enjoyed, we assembled in the (cold!) lobby of the hotel to meet our new guide, Velma. She had warned us that we would be doing a lot of walking today so to wear our most comfortable walking shoes. She did not disappoint! Our first stop of the day was to see the famed Tiananmen Square, a large city square in the centre of Beijing, China, named after the Tiananmen ("Gate of Heavenly Peace") located to its north,...

Oct 29, 2016 - Shanghai - Beijing

After an early breakfast followed by an 8:00am checkout, we boarded our luxury bus for the last time leaving at least 2 hours for traffic for our trip to the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station that was about 45km away in the western suburbs of Shanghai and beside an international airport of the same name. We were scheduled to catch the 10:00am train that would take us about 5hrs to make the 1300km trip at an average speed of 275km/h with 3 stops along the way. High-speed rail service in China was introduced on April 18, 2007 and has become...

Oct 24, 2016 - A trek to remember....Part 2

I’m on a train! Obviously…. As that’s where most of my journal entries are written…. But this train is a bit different… I’m on a Chinese bullet train – a sad but true fact that I am disproportionately excited about this. I’m on my way from Pingyao to Xi’An for my next adventure… before I go into Pingyao I need to catch up from where I left off! Thursday 20th October – Monday 24th October: Thursday was the first day we really experienced the ‘touristy’ side of the Great Wall as we headed up to Jinshanling… We woke a little later than normal...

Oct 19, 2016 - A trek to remember....Part 1

It’s now Monday after my week with my trek group and I have a lot to catch up on in the journal! Last time I wrote I had got to the point where we had crossed the border into China and headed to bed before the final stretch into Beijing. Saturday 15th October – Tuesday 18th October: We were woken with a knock at the door at 4.30am to prepare to alight from the train when it arrived in Beijing at 5.45am. After a bit of faffing to get ourselves up and organised we had a fair amount of time to kill but enjoyed a minute to reflect on the...

May 30, 2016 - Beijing for a while

Arrive at the airport around 6:30 then go through immigration control - which was easy as we were only transit passengers. Then into security which was a bit tougher but it went quickly. We were all searched and patted down but got through without being arrested. We went to look for a bite but very limited restaurants available. We stopped in a place and got some toast - order two cokes but they only had one available. Not the best breakfast. Then off and at 8:30 still no gate announced for our flight so we crashed in some empty seats. We...

May 14, 2016 - Off we go!

Up at 7:30 and get the car packed. David McGee is dropped off by Wanda and we pack his stuff, then he remembers he forgot some things so we had to drop by his house anyway. We headed out and had a breakfast (of sorts) at Hardee’s then drove to the Comfort Inn near the airport, parked the car, then immediately got into the hotel shuttle and got to the airport in plenty of time! We checked in our bags and sad goodbye to David as his flight was much later. Off to the gate and sat around a while, then ate lunch at a fancy airport restaurant...
