Jun 27, 2017 - Jingshan Park

First thing today - to get my glasses fixed. We walked to the eye hospital and found a spectacles shop in the vicinity. They fixed my glasses - yay! We walked on to Wangfujing Street and it was amazing. No resemblance whatsoever to the Wangfujing Street of 1991. Now it is an ultra modern, pedestrian only, ancy-fancy shopping area. First shop we went into was a book store. 8 floors of books. People sitting in the aisles, on the floor, reading books - lots of people - everywhere - for 8 floors! The next shop we went into - next door - was...

Jun 26, 2017 - The Great Wall of China and the bus crash

We were picked up in the hotel lobby at 6.40am. We drove around town picking up our other passengers. First stop of the tour - a jade factory. We bought a carved jade ball that we had admired on our trip here in 1991, but had not been able to afford then. It was a long wait. Then we drove to the Ming Tombs. The drive there was through beautiful mountains - jagged mountains tops, steep slopes coved in trees. The tomb we went to was the Ding Ling Tomb (seriously that was its name). It was a 35 minute walk up a steep hill from the bus. Then...

Jun 25, 2017 - Loose in Beijing

Huge selection of food at breakfast today. I went Asian - bowl of noodles, fresh fruit, then steamed pork buns. Gordon went Western - waffles, banana bread, pain-au-chocolate, Danish pastries and coffee. We walked down to Tiananmen Square - about two and a half kilometres away. There was a lot of security to go here. Security to even go near the area. Then you go underground and have to choose where you want to go. Eg Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Mao’s Mausoleum, National Museum, and about 3 other options. We chose the National...

Jun 24, 2017 - Beijing at last

We arrived safely and our driver was waiting for us. Today was about recovering from jet lag and finding our bearings in Beijing. The morning was spent getting into our room. We spent the whole afternoon finding our way to Ritan Park....

Jun 23, 2017 - Flight to Beijing

Flight was fairly straightforward. With one hilarious exception. This is what happened : During dinner, I accidentally dropped my PLASTIC fork. The seats were so tight that I could not reach down to pick it up. So I asked for another fork. That is when the amazing part happened. They said they would bring another one when they had finished giving out the meals. Fair enough. I asked again later. They said they would bring another one when they had finished packing up after dinner. Curious. They then tried to take my meal. I said I couldn't...

May 16, 2017 - Last Day of touring in China

Our first trip on this beautiful, hot, sunny morning was to the Jingshan Chinese Herbal Institute - oh yes, this would be Shopping Trip No. 7, that was heralded by our Local Guide on the bus as being an incredibly interesting Chinese Traditional Medicine Institute. Our group was led into the obligatory cloistered room and the door closed behind us - again! When the door next opened, a small army of employees came in bearing buckets with warm herbal foot soaks, and each of us took off our shoes and put our feet in individual tubs then we...

May 12, 2017 - The Great Wall of China

Today's special excursions were to 'Shopping Tours Nos. 5 and 6 and - oh yes, that's right - to visit the fabled Great Wall of China. Shopping Tour No. 5 was to "visit one of the largest Jade Exhibitions in Asia" which we did en route to the Great Wall. Not so much an exhibition, more your standard sales room. Our Local Guide gave us the now-expected long discourse on jade while travelling there on our bus, its origins, etc., then we were released into the Jade Salesroom - oops, sorry.... 'Exhibition' where we were stalked by dozens of...

May 11, 2017 - Beijing or Bust!

(Warm Prompt (hot tip): tap/click on photos to enlarge) Oh grooooaaaann! I feel like we only got in to our hotel, the Ramada Beijing NOrth, after 1:30am - oh yeah, that's right, we did - and here we are, all bright eyed and bushy-tailed (and if you believe that.........!) ready to go touristing again. Our group was on two different flights from Chongqing to Beijing last night and, unfortunately, our flight was the one that left Chongqing a little later so it was getting pretty late by the time we got squared away and into our rooms at the...

Feb 15, 2017 - Beijing - last day

Let me give you a bit of an advice. If you ever come to Beijing...skip the zoo. This was probably one of the worst zoo we've seen. And believe me,we have seen hundreds. I was blown away from the fact they had pandas - but why wouldn't they have? It's China ☺️-. They were absolutely fantastic and very cute!! 𯐼𯐼𯐼 But as we walked more, we had to realise, the cages/boxes/enclosures are too small and way too dirty to keep animals there. I mean, they all had space to walk around but nothing like it would be in Europe. I was absolutely...

Feb 14, 2017 - Beijing - around the centre

Good day everyone, I decided, I'm not writing about today as we really didn't do too much apart from walking around the city really. However, I also decided to give some information about Beijing, China, the people, prices, etc. In case someone wants to come here. I will also add the lovely scorpion and bug photos from the market. Where she'll I start? Let's write about the people a bit. My very first meeting with the local Chinese people was a really indecisive moment. On the plane they were really pushy, a bit loud and how they...

Feb 13, 2017 - Beijing - The Great Wall of China

Good afternoon from Beijing. Today wasn't an easy day. We woke up at 6am, got ready by 6.40 for our pick up. They first took us to an other hostel where we had our breakfast - scrambled egg, bacon, sausage, toasts and hash brown. The bacon wasn't really bacon and the sausage wasn't exactly looking good but it was tasty and that's what mattered. As it was only two of us we were a bit surprised if we are going to have a private tour but as the bus arrived, we had 21 of us to see the Great Wall today. Our travel buddies were from the...

Feb 12, 2017 - Beijing 1st day - Forbidden city

Hello, I'm back again, this time I finally got to Beijing. I hopped on a plane 2days ago at 3.30am as you all know. I got off at 3pm Beijing time (which is 8 hours ahead of UK time). I thought I'll be adventurous and instead of taking the taxi, I will take the public transport. That was an idea I have already checked out while I was in Dubai so Inhad all details what to catch and how to get there. I didn't calculate though that I got off at terminal 3 and the express train which was my first transportation was at terminal 3. I thought, ok I...
