Mar 10, 2019 - Volcanoes of the Lakes District

We based ourselves in Villarrica at Hostel Don Juan for two nights and explored some of the lakes and volcanoes that are in this area. Walking along the black beach we bumped into a Canadian couple we'd met in Puerto Varas while staying at the same hotel and decided to head to a bar for drinks and to swap stories. When we were all in Puerto Varas it was cold and raining and here the weather is very warm with tops of 29 degrees. They are older than us and have been travelling by bus. Well Volcano Villarrica (known as Devil's House to the...

Jan 23, 2009 - Villarrica

Jan 27, 2008 - Talca to Lake Tinquilco

hi, we're back into a town again after being up in the mountains and lakes district. Well we went out for a lovely Mexican dinner in Talca but I woke up the next morning feeling quite ill, so after a lengthy stay in the banos (toilet) and because we'd planned to move on anyway (plus there was no hot water at the hostel) we got a taxi to the bus station and went to Chillan. We were trying to get to see a rodeo but after trying to find out through the tourist places and also visiting a town where we were told there was going to be a rodeo, we...

Apr 25, 2006 - Ein rauchender Vulkan

Apr 14, 2006 - Pucon and Volcanoe Villarica

Yesterday we had the best day of our trip so far, we climber Volcano Villarica. We had waited around for two days because the rain had made it impossible for us to attempt it but we awoke early on Friday morning happy to hear no pattering on the window panes! We had met two Irish girls Karry and Nessa who were staying in the same guest house and we all left Pucon, the little town where we are based, at 7 in the morning, ready and raring to go, and the tour company drove us to the base. Here we had to decide whether to save our legs for an...

Mar 25, 2006 - Across the Andes

I would love to have stayed in San Martin de los Andes for a few days but we were off this morning to drive across the Andes. On the Argentine side is a new highway as we climbed toward the snowcapped peaks. They dont seem real, maybe a backdrop for the annual school photos. We just kept climbing and climbing. Just before we cross the border into Chile we enter Lanin National Park = part in Chile and part in Argentina. Just to let you know this keyboard is a bit unfathomable so you may see some strange symbols. We passed from the highway to...

Feb 2, 2006 - Pucon, Chile

Over the Andes into Chile. Our attempt to climb a live volcano at dawn was thwarted by the early morning weather, so we contented ourselves with bathing in hot pools by the river, sailing a Laser on the lake and grooving to Chilean band Rock Hudson at a lakeside concert. Then it was an overnight bus ride to Santiago and then home to New Zealand.

Jan 11, 2006 - Pucon, Chile (revisited)

I arrived back into Pucon around mid-day on Wednesday, and met up with the boys at a hostel. It tuns out there was to be one more of us. John, Carmin's friend from college had also recently arrived in South America and was joining us for the Patagonia stretch. I hadn't known, but what a great addition. The day was again pretty laid back and filled with nothing. Some of us went out for a short hike, but as I was sick and my leg was severely hurting I decided to just rest in the hostel, and walk around town a bit. At night we graced the...

Dec 24, 2005 - Days 51-55: Christmas in the Chilean Lake District

Happy holidays to all of you. We wish you a great new year! We spent our Christmas week in the Chilean Lake District, some 800 km (500 miles) south of Santiago. From Santiago to Temuco, we took an overnight train equipped with luxurious looking seats that turned out most uncomfortable. We then picked up a rental car and drove across beautiful farmland, heading for Pucon, a picturesque town in the northern part of the Lake District. Entering the Lake District, we expected to see lots of lakes but we were pleasantly surprised that the...
