Mar 21, 2020 - March 21, 2020 - Guardalavaca to Toronto

It was a sad day to leave our little apartment and say goodbye to all of our friends (without the traditional hugging and kiss on the cheek). And a little nerve wracking to wonder if we would be exposed to the virus on our flights, as they were all guaranteed to be full capacity. We left Guardalavaca at 10am for the Holguin airport and were well ahead of the charter buses from the all-inclusive. We had booked our seats and got in line early so we were checked in and through immigration & security quickly - took us forever last year! We were...

Feb 15, 2020 - Feb 15, 2020 - Toronto to Holguin

We arrived at the Holguin airport on time at 1:30 and by 2:30pm we were through customs with bikes in our possession. Lily & Miguel (our apartment owners) were waiting for us with a huge taxi. My bike box fit, however we had to dismantle the boa with Fero’s bike. All had arrived safely & soundly. I must say, it is always nice to be greeted in a foreign country by friends! Within minutes of coming through we were loaded in the taxi and on our way to Guardalavaca. We stopped at several veggie & fruit stands enroute and Lily & Miguel...

Jan 14, 2020 - Frozen departure

January 14 We woke to a radio programme asking listeners to take a picture of the temperature displayed in their car, but only if it were below -30. I think the winner was one showing -43.5. Needless to say, we were not relishing the prospect of the trip out to the airport, but that was overshadowed by the prospect of Toronto being just below freezing and Florida being in the mid to high 20s. We did the last minute things around the house, turned off the water, set the thermostat to hold the same temperature 24 hours a day, unplug the water...

Oct 17, 2019 - My 5 Recommendations for your next trip to Toronto

To kick off my first contribution, I’m giving my 5 must see recommendations for your next trip to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Skating at Nathan Philips Square Toronto takes a lot of heat from us for its cold winters; rightly so. However, visiting Toronto in the winter is actually an amazing experience, and also a beautiful time to see the city. On my last trip I stayed at the Sheraton, just a block from Nathan Philips Square. A friend of mine brought me a spare pair of skates and we spent the better part of an evening enjoying coffee and the...

Sep 4, 2019 - Toronto

September 4, Toronto, Ontario High of 72 Drove to Rough Hill Train Station, (Go Train) and had a 30-minute ride into Toronto about 9:30. Boarded the City Sightseeing Bus (a hop on, hop off). First stop was CN Tower, Canadian National Railroad Tower built to be a tourist attraction and it worked. Went to the observation floor which was 114 stories high. Took pictures and felt our balance was “off” and thought we could feel a little movement. The next floor down was the glass floor which was even more disturbing to our sense of balance. Got...

Aug 28, 2019 - New York to Canada (All Narrative + Toronto Map Holder)

We left Rochester, New York (and suburbs), but not before my Aunt “arranged/pressured” my cousins into throwing us a going away steak BBQ. I definitely have the best aunt/cousins and I love them all dearly. I can’t believe that I was dumb/lazy/stupid enough to let almost FORTY years go by without any contact with any of them. I don’t deserve the love they have shown us over the recent years. My brother called to invite us to a spaghetti dinner the night before we left. How could we refuse? My sugar count (Yeah, in addition to everything...

Jun 9, 2019 - Pretend castles - puh!

We had a slightly less hectic day today but still managed to fit in quite a bit. Our hotel, the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto, is situated in a fabulous position - right on the shore of Ontario Lake harbour. We have a great view from our room and plenty of cafes and restaurants very close by. After an early breakfast, Cheryl and I went for a bit of a walk around the harbour area right near our hotel and then booked a harbour cruise for later in the afternoon. By 8.45, the group was on the bus and ready for a couple of morning activities-...

Jun 8, 2019 - Driving on

After an enjoyably relaxed morning of walking around Ottawa, we were on the bus at 11am and on the road again. To while away the two hours until we reached our lunch stop, we listened to some Canadian music and watched a very interesting video about the Thousand Islands. In an effort to edumacate you, here are some terribly interesting facts (don’t skip them as there will be a test next time I see you!): * The Thousand Islands are situated between Ottawa and Toronto. * There are actually 1,864 islands. * To classify as an ‘island’ it has to...

Feb 13, 2019 - Toronto Airport

Leaving in the midst of a Storm. We headed down to Toronto a day early so that we could take our time. As we drove from Perth into the storm it was a little eerie with no cars on the road. It felt like we were the last ones on earth. I guess we were crazy to start off with the storm warnings, but in the end the drive wasn’t bad and we arrived at our hotel befor the freezing rain started. We are sitting in the airport waiting for our flight to Buenos Aires that leaves in 5 hours. Boring!,,,,, Write to you later when more interesting...

Feb 11, 2019 - Monday February 11, 2019 - Toronto to Guardalavaca

One of the shortest hotel stays 𯘊, we are up at 6:30am and across the street, through security and at Tim Hortons by 8:00am. Our gate is the furthest away you can get from security so we stop at Timmies for breakfast and a coffee. Off to the gate and we board in time for our 9:30am flight. The flight is ontime however we spend over 30 minutes in queue for de-icing. It is very slick, just like the automatic car washes so we are in and out in no time and now I queue to takeoff. And we are airborn - Next Stop Cuba!! The flight was enjoyable -...

Feb 2, 2019 - Toronto departure

After a week of snowstorms and digging out from under the weather, both literally and figuratively (both Lisette and I were recovering from bouts of the inevitable winter 'flu) we were excited that the departure date was upon us after months of planning this mid-winter get-away. It all started with a phone call from our friend and travelling mentor, Trevor. He made us an offer we just couldn't pass up after virtually enjoying all his intervening travels since we spent an awesome fortnight together several years ago on one of our most...

Dec 1, 2018 - Toronto (In Transit)

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD Unfortunately, we arrived in Toronto at Terminal One on Austrian Airlines and departed from the same terminal on Air Canada. In between we had a 6-hour lay over. We weren’t at all concerned when we booked the tickets because we had access to the business class lounges and thought for sure we would be comfortable. We checked out the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge first and though it was spacious, the furniture looked like it was on its last legs. The leather on the seats was split on many of the chairs, and the...
