For the last day of Mum’s holday we explored along the Welland Canal. The ship canal runs 27 miles from Port Colborne on Lake Erie to Port Weller on Lake Ontario. The canal forms part of the St Lawrence Seaway and allows ships to traverse the Niagara Escarpment. It is estimated that over 40 million tonnes of cargo on over 3,000 boats passes through the canal each year. The boats through a serious of eight lift locks drop over 326 feet from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario and take on average 11 hours the traverse the canal’s length. Near Thorold...
