Jul 6, 2017 - Parry Sound to Orillia

The campground is about 10 km south of Parry Sound but I backtracked into town this morning because last night I read about a fire lookout tower you can climb to get a view over the sound. It was worth the effort with a magnificent 360° view & there were only 10 sets of stairs, not the 12 the book said. There was a cruise ship tied up at the wharf which must have come in last night after our trip finished. It’s the Pearl Mist & is sailing around the Great Lakes from Toronto to Chicago – it really dwarfs the Island Queen next to it. My next...

Aug 12, 2012 - Orillia, Ontario Visit

We got up early and hit the road, borrowing Don's Camaro (as it was still raining). We went to Orillia to visit a long time friend that I went to elementary school with.....Martha Ewart (née Cowan), husband Deane and her family. Martha hasn't changed one bit, and it was a thrill to see her brother Ian, and also meet daughter Ellen and fiancé Richard. After a great visit, we headed back to Wasaga Beach and a little bit of sunshine. Don, Trish and Nicky took us up to Blue Mountain in Collingwood for some sightseeing. Blue Mountain is a skiing...

Aug 22, 2011 - Back to Oro

Into Barrie. Value Village for clothes, boom box, etc. CAA for TripTik to Burlington, Oakville, Alberta. Pick up Jono and Ian, lunch at Roosters while Meagan changes my oil. Hugs goodbye. Off to Misty's sleazy dive club. Lasted not quite one hour, not good at all. Dropped off the boys, making plans for moving everyone next week. Went to Hawkestone to explore, got automatically rising pizza and wine. Had a lonely evening, ready to go back home now.

Aug 18, 2011 - Oro 3.0

Left Marmora at daybreak, driving was much better in the light. Stopped outside Lindsay for coffee, and made it to my campsite by 10:00. Not feeling well, slept, read and rested for two days. Pondering the philosophy of camping. People invest a lot in equipment, work hard to do it. Connect with nature, do athletic things like canoeing and swimming in the water, hiking and climbing on the land, also fishing, photography, and just sitting around a fire. Some into serious drinking, some into music, some enjoying the quiet. Some youngsters into...

Jul 18, 2011 - My week at Oro

I woke up at Oro Family Campground with a week ahead of me to fix, clean, read, relax, cook, and regroup. I discovered that the pool was deep enough to swim in, if not to dive, and very clean. The rest of the campground was a bit sketchy, with broken laundry equipment, a missing lock on one bathroom stall and a missing paper dispenser in another, and a general feeling of long neglect. But it had one working washer and a dryer, so I could get my laundry done, a shower for a long-overdue scrub, and power and water for my rig. The first...

Jul 11, 2011 - Setting up camp for a week

I have been staying in the parking lot of Duckworth Shopping Plaza when I am in Barrie, for a night or two. The lovely people at Fil's Restaurant gave me permission to park overnight, I have taxi drivers watching over me all night long, and Tim Horton's opens early and closes late. But now it seems that Tim won't be ready to travel for a while, because he has to recover his body and regroup his life after his long trip to South Africa, and this is the week that his mom and her fiance Greg get to use his family's cottage at The Rock Farm,...

Sep 22, 2010 - Orillia

After her flight from England we had organised a quiet day so she could get herself acclimatised. This included a visit to Orillia nestled between the Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching. We enjoyed a gentle stroll along the shores of Lake Couchiching in the sunshine. It was a perfect day particularly if you found a sheltered spot out of the wind. We watched black squirrels and admired a number of boats moored in the harbour. We finished our walk by finding a local tearoom with lovely cakes, very popular with the locals.

Aug 16, 2009 - McRae Point Provincial Park - Orillia, Ontario - August 14 - 16, 2009

We had been waiting for this, our next camping trip, since we got home from Darlington on July 26. Joe and I both had Friday, August 14 off work and of course the only thing to do with a Friday off was go camping! We decided to go to McRae Point Provincial Park, a park we had been to many times before with our pop-up. We made a reservation three weeks earlier as there was a particular site we wanted. By the time Friday rolled around, the park did show up online as being completely sold out, but while walking around we noticed a fair number...

Apr 26, 2005 - The trip begins

Well last night was one hell of a party, I woke up in a towel on Dave Jr's couch. Sarah really knows how to throw a going away party, I was told about the later part of my night by everyone the next morning. There seems to be a few blank spaces though. Shannon got the most out of the night by getting to put me in the shower, ( Don't Ask ) Sorry Dave for the mess in the bathroom I have no idea how that puke got above the mirror though, someone else must have done it because I certainly would have rembered that wouldn't I. Thanks everyone for...
