Jul 21, 2014 - Twillingate, Day 2

This morning we had a tour scheduled for 10:00 at the Long Point Lighthouse. It was about 3 miles away. Everyone drove their cars or doubled up with someone else. We went by the iceberg to get a closer look before heading to the lighthouse. It had turned some since yesterday. The coastline at the lighthouse was spectacular. We were able to climb to the top of the tower which had a wonderful view. The afternoon was free time so we both drove around the area. That evening we went to the All Around the Circle Dinner Theater. We had a choice of...

Jul 20, 2014 - Twillingate, Nfld Day 1

Today was just a drive day. We continued backtracking on Highway 430 until we got to Trans Canada #1E. The was clear and appears it will be warm. All the lakes we passed were as clear as glass. We had lot of hills to climb and step downgrades. The roads were fair and then got better when we reached the main highway. We drove 150 miles until taking off on 340N toward Twillingate. This road was called The Road to the Isles. It was a terrible road all the way to the end. Many chuckholes. As we arrived in town we saw a beautiful iceberg out in...

Jul 15, 2014 - Twillingate - Day 2

Today we went exploring the area around Twillingate. The scenery was beautiful, although very hilly. Norm and I took the truck off-roading and searched out an iceberg in a nearby bay. I’ve included a couple of pictures. We drove up to the town of Crow Head and saw the lighthouse and viewed off the cliffs down to the ocean with the icebergs and whale touring boats. We had a nice lunch at the Crow’s Nest Cafe, a nice little cafe perched on the side of the hill with a beautiful view of the bay from their outdoor patio. Glenna and Ria went on a...

Jul 15, 2014 - Twillingate

We drove back south from Rocky Harbour to the Trans Canada Highway ( TCH ) and then started east. Our goal today was a 350 km drive to Twillingate, a town on the north shore, about 100 kms off the TCH, and almost in the centre of Newfoundland, from an east/west perspective. We had been warned about rough roads, but they really weren’t any problem. We had a good drive and arrived at Peyton RV Park in Twillingate by mid afternoon. This is a nice little park, almost right on the Atlantic, with views of icebergs in the bay from our RV window....

It has been over a week since our last entry and it is going to take a couple of days to catch-up. We did not have WIFI access for three days and we have a very busy day today and a very long travel day tomorrow. Aug 6, 2013 - Twillingate, NL

August 5, travel day to Twillingate, NL Distance to Twillingate is 217 miles. We started out with intention of stopping at the Air museum in Gander but I got distracted and missed the turn; that’s what I get for leading. We stopped at a grocery store in Gander but it is a holiday in Gander and everything was closed. Canada has a lot of holidays. Up this point we were traveling on TCH-1, there major highway which is mostly good. At Gander we turned onto highway 330 which was rough is some places. From 330 to 331 to 340 to the Twillingate...

Driving to Twillingate we stop at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum Gander in route. The most interesting thing was what their town did for the USA people on the planes during 911. Take a look at the pictures and the story. That night after arrival we had a Newfie Dinner and Show, really good dinner and show. The next day we tour the Prime Berth Fishing Museum which was very full of Information and wonderful stories. Then tour the Long Point Lighthouse and looked at the wonderful views. That night we had a musical performance of the Split...

Jul 22, 2013 - Quiet day

Wasn't feeling too good today, probably last night's dinner. But it was really good at the time. Tonight a hamburger cookout was provided for us and everyone brought a side dish or dessert. Then the entertainment began. Several of the gang had bought "Ugly Sticks" which were played to taped music. One of our group played the harmonica. Eventually, they had everyone in on the act. Nice way to end the day.

Jul 21, 2013 - The afternoon and evening activity

A wine factory tour was on the afternoon activity list. And once again the "odd" group went first. We're starting to get a complex. Unfortunately, it was not very interesting as there is no production going on at the present time. But...the wine tasting made up for it. This evening we went to the Dinner Theater, all of us this time. We had already chosen what we wanted to eat ahead of time and wondered as we ate what the "theater" was all about. Well, did we ever find out. The 3 male musicians and 4 women sang several beautiful songs. And...

Jul 21, 2013 - Twillingate

Had a wonderful time here. The morning we took a fishing museum tour. Privately owned by a gentleman whose came from a long line of fishermen. Since our group is so large, we went in 2 shifts. The "odd" numbers first. A picture referred to as "the stage" was originally his father's in Boyds Cove. He floated it to its current location which was a 5 hour process. Not long after beginning construction of the museum as a memorial to his father, he discovered a beached whale close by. You see its remains in one of the pictures. In a picture you...

Sep 26, 2012 - Day 73 - Twillingate area

Today we toured up to Twillingate and area. I can not get the song out of my head."Hip your partner Sally Tibo, hip your partner Sally Brown, Fogo, Twillingate, Morton's Harbour, all around the circle." We didn't go to all the places but they were just a short boat ride away. It did not seem to be much point in taking the tour as most of the tourist sites are closed for the year. We went for a lovely hike at Twillingate lighthouse out to the point. We could see fellows out in their dory's fishing as the cod season was open for sports...
