Jul 22, 2018 - quidi vidi brewery and harbor

Today is an off day. We drove around the city dodging in and out and around barricades for a 10K race we weren’t aware of. The dodging around put us in Quidi Vidi at the brewery, (by accident, no kidding, we swear). We were just in time for the Sunday morning tour and tasting after which we hiked out to the harbor entrance and saw more whales and several boats making their way thru the small entrance and into the harbor with their limits of cod, which can only be fished on Sat and Sun. Next we visited Water Street in the middle of down town...

Jul 21, 2018 - St Johns tour, Signal tour, Quidi Vidi

Most of this day was spent with a thorough bus tour of the area and another boat trip to see whales and puffins at Bull Bay. Our trip began driving through St. John’s and out to “Cape Spear Light House” at the most easterly point of land on the North American Continent. Here we say major WWII big gun bunkers and other shore defenses. In St. John’s we toured through the city and around the harbor to the narrow entrance. This is a naturally protected harbor that can provide shelter for large vessels and drill rigs. A smaller harbor with a...

Jul 20, 2018 - Travel to St Johns

188 miles to St. John’s, The capital of Newfoundland, and the Avalon Peninsula. This small city is about 500 years old and is the center of the maritime and offshore oil industries in this province. It is also the Irish heartland of Nfld. Our evening was spent working on this blog since we were back to good wifi and phone service.

Jul 6, 2018 - Last day in St. John's

Being our last full day in Newfoundland, we decided not to make it too strenous as we had done most of what we wanted to. I researched nearby hiking trails after breakfast (yes we barely made it but brought back our breakfast to the room) and after a quick shower, headed out to Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre which had some nice riverside trails up and downstream from the Centre. We arrived there around noon and after being briefed on the length and quality of the trails, headed out, first upstream. The well groomed and...

Jun 26, 2017 - Pippy Park Campground (6/26/17)

We didn't have a place to stay when we arrived in Newfoundland so we tried our luck at Pippy Park in St. John's. We were lucky, they had a spot for us. The park is very wooded and nice, but we were in an area at the back of the park. We found a caravan group of RVers. They travel together as a group all over the States and Canada. In talking with some of them, Tim was given a catalog of all of the trips planned. They are amazing. There is a flat fee which is all inclusive. We may seriously look into trying a couple of those trips. After we...

Aug 15, 2016 - Coloured houses, water, and Iron

Aug 16 - 18 We toured a small Village Quidi Vidi . Really cute! Tuesday - Johnson GEO Center near Signal hill. They had numerous displays on rocks and the formations. Also, quite a large tribute to the Titanic.. our Grand daughter is interested in Geology. Wednesday - went to the most easterly piont in Canada, Cape Spear National Park. The coast line is amazing with the waves crashing against the rocks. I could have sat there for hours, oops, I did.. while we had a picnic lunch. The lighthouse is perched on a hill that overlooks rolling...

Aug 13, 2016 - Road Trip section 3 - Newfoundland 4th August - 12 August

I wake and it is dawn. Zak is nowhere in sight so I go back to sleep. I wake up when he returns and he tells me that he spent most of the night on deck under the stars and that the sunrise was amazing. He has hardly slept at all. We are one of the last to leave the ferry so we sit and chill for a while before packing up our things. Once in the car it takes an age to get moving but eventually we are off the ferry. Ireland. Overcast, moody, green with lots of rocks and a rugged landscape. If Nova Scotia was named after Scotland, Newfoundland...

May 8, 2016 - St Johns

Sitting at St John's airport waiting for our return flight to Dublin. We had another lovely day on the road today doing a coastal loop around St Johns. Found a great restaurant to have Mother's Day lunch. Glenn is pretty impressed with the Iceberg Beer, brewed with 25,000 year old iceberg water and I was pretty impressed with the homemade Sangria.

May 7, 2016 - St Johns

Spent most of the day wandering the streets of St Johns. The town is full of those beautiful coloured houses, they call them Jelly Bean houses and lot's of local craft shops. Good opportunity for some souvenir shopping. This afternoon we took a drive up to Signal Hill. Great views looking back to St Johns Harbour and great walking track. The highest point is called Ladies Lookout because they believe that's where the women went to look out for their men coming home in the ships.

May 6, 2016 - Newfoundland - St Johns

After another beautiful breakfast at Twillingate we head off for a 5 hour drive back to St Johns and it was atrocious. To start with, the roads here, even on the highways are pretty bad but it was raining as we left and only got heavier the further we went. Pretty scary at times. 𯘱𯘱𯘱 But St Johns is awesome. You all need to come here. It's a really old town that is working hard to reinvent itself. It's got real character with an Irish influence. And again the locals have surprised us with their friendliness. If we stand on the sidewalk...
