Jun 23, 2017 - Twillingate.........as pretty as it sounds
Twillingate is the gem of the central region of NFLD………..that’s what the tourist brochures told us. With this destination in mind we moved on up the line to Dildo Run Provincial Park, about 40km south of Twillingate. The stop at the visitor’s information centre at Notre Dame Junction had proven fruitful as the lady who worked there lives in Twillingate so could give us all kinds of useful tips. Most importantly to us was the condition of the road – well…..”I won’t lie to you,” she said……”there are potholes. It is doable but you have to slow...Jump to full entry

The first town is Cupids and the last is Dildo, Hearts Desire is in the middle. Our first stop was at Baynoody Knitwear, Spinning & Weaving in Conception Harbor. Baynoody is a sheep farm that has been in the family since the 1600's. The owners raise the sheep, sheer the sheep dye the wool and then they spin it. Barb found two hanks of yarn that she will be...Jump to full entry
Jun 22, 2017 - "Fortune"atley we don't live there
The garage stood good to their word has us out by 10:30am - the noise is gone, the oil is changed and we are good to go. As a test we head out along the peninsula to Fortune Harbour at the very tip. Another in a series of tiny, picturesque villages that exude charm and a simple way of life. Stopping to get a drink at their local “corner store”, we chat with the lady, Patty, and her 8 year old son working at one of two employers in town – the store & the restaurant, both owned by the same family. Patty was born here and had lived her whole...Jump to full entry
Jun 21, 2017 - Happy First Day of Summer
First day of summer treated us to another warm, rain free day to tour more of the fishing villages dotted around the peninsula east of ours. Springdale is regional headquarters of this area so we wanted to take some time to enjoy all it has to offer. Well………….it didn’t take long! We hit Triton and Brighton with their brightly colored buildings and stopped at the mother of all souvenir shops. A large building jammed with every possible item from ugly sticks to beautiful jackets! Who they sell to is a mystery as we seemed to be the only...Jump to full entry
Jun 20, 2017 - from Fleur de Lys to La Scie
We will start out this entry with a disclaimer – by the time we finish our travels around Newfoundland you may well be sick and tired of photos of fishing villages, waterfalls, lighthouses and icebergs. This is not our fault – they really are very pretty and we really want to share them with you. Chances are you, however, will NOT be sick of photos of moose – meese??? This, too, is not our fault – blame the meese! That’s right folks, today was a check out the Baie Verte Peninsula day and everything it has to offer. Over 300kms we put on the...Jump to full entry

Jun 19, 2017 - here moosey, moosey!
A rare rainy morning as we headed north through the fog. Many, many potholes in this part of the highway as we bumped and rattled our way toward Cornerbrook. The weather is not supposed to improve for several days so we decided to postpone the north peninsula in the hopes that the weather will have improved by the time we return later in July. Because we hope to do a fair bit of hiking in Gros Morne National Park we thought that working our way UP to a lookout/viewpoint only to be socked in with clouds, fog and/or rain would be rather...Jump to full entry
Jun 18, 2017 - walking in the rain!
It was a windy foggy morning but, undaunted, we loaded up for our tour of the Codroy Valley. The roads here are not as narrow or winding as the ones on the south coast but we still wound up and down and around, past some of the few farms in Newfoundland. This land has been settled for centuries as the wide river gave access to its fertile soil – apparently the most fertile on the island. To this day there is excellent river fishing and despite the weather several hardy souls were up to their thighs in the water casting out into the water....Jump to full entry
Jun 18, 2017 - June 18 and 19th
June 18 A drizzly start to the day, but we headed out towards Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve. This is where 70 000 seabirds nest in the spring. There are gannets, murres, kittiwakes, guillemots, razorbills and cormorants. As we neared the cape, the trees became smaller and eventually disappeared. What was left was rocky barrens covered in small plants that hugged the earth, probably to avoid the constant wind. We passed a small herd of grazing cows behind a fence - later, we were told sheep used to be free to graze the whole cape, but...Jump to full entry
Jun 17, 2017 - Underway for Newfoundland
Underway for Newfoundland LOCATION: Argentia, NL MILES DRIVEN none WEATHER low of 50 high of 65 and very windy WHERE WE STAYED Argentia sunset Park STORY; June 16 Cleaned up and stowed away all loose things in the camper and the jeep. We set the fridge on its coldest temp yesterday and froze 7 or 8 bottles of water. I replaced a broken trailer plug on the jeep. So at 3:30 we headed to the ferry terminal as ready as we can be. The check in went very smooth. We were told to stage in lane 12, all the other campers were in lanes 13 and 14, so I...Jump to full entry
Jun 17, 2017 - talk about living on the edge!
Our first stop was the Port aux Basque Visitors Centre and on the ladies recommendation we chose to spend the morning checking out the road to Rose Blanche and its granite lighthouse. Turning into each of the tiny villages along this road, we marvelled at the colourful homes perched around each harbour. The narrow roads (I use this term loosely as they are about 5’ wide at their widest!) in these villages are certainly a meandering labyrinth, going helter skelter, up & down, around and over! What a hoot trying to figure out how we got to...Jump to full entry
