Aug 10, 2013 - Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland

Yesterday Ross was going to accompany several other of the group on an early morning hike in the Gros Morne Park but it was raining and everyone decided not to go the hiking. The water filters we use needed to be serviced and Ross started to service them when he discovered he didn't have one of the two filters needed. So he decided to drive to Deer Lake, about 40 miles south of the campground to try and find a replacement filter. It took stops at three stores but he finally found a suitable replacement. In the meantime the Ables decided to...

Newfoundland 2013

Aug 10, 2013 - Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland

Today will have two journal entries because tomorrow we head north to St. Anthony, Newfoundland and the WIFI availability is unknown If there is anything exciting that occurs during the drive to St. Anthony it will be reported on the next journal entry, whenever that happens. St. Anthony is not looking to good because there have been changes by Adventure Caravans that are not to our, nor most of our fellow caravanners, liking. St. Anthony was supposed to include a one-night stay in a hotel in Labrador and the hotel would allow pets and/or...

Newfoundland 2013

Aug 8, 2013 - Rocky Harbor, Newfoundland

Today we left Twillingate, Newfoundland around 0900 for a 265 mile drive to Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland. We will be here for three nights and we plan on exploring the Gros Morne National Park. This park is a world renown park and is classified as a Heritage Park which is a very prestigious classification for any park. The weather was clear for the most part but there had been rain showers in areas through which we passed as evidenced by the puddles in the streets and parking lots. In Grand Falls we stopped for about an hour where we walked...

Newfoundland 2013

Aug 8, 2013 - Rocky Harbour, Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland

August 8, 2013 Rocky Harbour, NL With Ross and Marge leading, we started out about 8:30 with overcast skies and 62 degrees. We drove 60 miles on highway 340 then another 140 miles on TCH-1, the interstate highway. At exit 16, we stopped for fuel. Diesel was $5.20/gallon. I also filled the truck. Regular was $5.22/gallon. The last 66 miles was on hwy 430; a windy road with steep hills and downgrades. Rocky Harbour lies within the Gros Morne National Park. The park is a vast wilderness area that borders the Gulf of St. Lawrence. We are...

Two free days in Rocky Harbour we are in the Gros Morne National Park. We had the day to explore the park and took a wonderful boat tour of Western Pond. It was a boat ride into their fiords. It was gorgeous with he high cliff. We had to walk 3 miles round trip so got great exercise to get to the boat. Then we went to see a great musical group that night for Anchors Away. Had a wonderful time.

Jul 19, 2013 - Boat Tour

Yesterday was a long driving for Russell, but no problem with his leg. Today we had a boat our of the Bay for 2 hours. The crew were great at their job as well as making us laugh. Saw lighthouses, towns, eagles and rocky cliffs. This place got its name honestly. The church you will see is not in its original spot. The pastor had it moved so he wouldn't have to walk so far from his home.

We took a boat ride on Bon Bay. The scenery is spectacular and we saw eagles and small whales. The crew of the boat is entertaining in their commentary and in their musical performance at the end of the ride. We drove to the Grand Codroy Campground after the boat ride so we would be in position to take the ferry on Wednesday.

Jun 24, 2013 - Norris Point Lookout

We drove 195 miles to the next campground in the Gros Morne National Park. Driving along, it was so beautiful. We drove for miles right next to the Gulf of St. Lawrence with no trees, buildings or "guardrails" obstructing our view. It was hazy this morning so pictures of the shoreline do not do it justice. The winds were quite strong this morning and the roads were very bumpy. Reminds us of an amusement ride. In sorts, it kind of is. The cold brutal winters do a job on the macadam roads and some of the potholes sneak up on you. We were...

Monday, August 20, 2012 – Rocky Harbor, NFLD at Gros Morne RV Park We are back tracking some just to see the group “Anchors Aweigh”. We got tickets tonight and are happy. We parked at the Gros Morne RV Park which is about 3 blocks away from the building so we don’t have to travel much at night. The group started at 8pm and was over at 11:15. They are fabulous – play music, sing, and are a comedy act as well. The best money spent for entertainment so far. We are spending two days at this RV park. Tomorrow we will do housecleaning and...

2012 travel

Jun 28, 2012 - Gros Morne National Park

Today we drove further north on the Trans Canada Highway to Deer Lake where we turned east toward Gros Morne National Park. Even though the clouds were low and it was spitting (What Newfies call showers) off and on, we caught glimpses of some real grandeur. From photos we have seen, this will rival Yosemite, even though the mountains aren't as high. We'll get some pictures as soon as the clouds part and post them for you to make your own assesment. The Halibut are in and we hope to enjoy some of it this evening. It sounds like the fishermen...

Dream On

Aug 9, 2011 - Gran Morne National Park - Day 2

Well it rained most of the night and today as well, we decided to wait and see how the weather is later, if it became better we would do some touring. We decided to go to the wildlife museum, a wonder display of Newfoundland wildlife that a local taxidermist did from "road kill given to him by the local governmental wildlife department, 20% of the animals and fish on display were caught by John Laughter. We then visited the Historical Bonnie Bay Hospital in Norris Point, it was established by a nurse and it was the first hospital in the...

Aug 7, 2011 - Gros Morne RV Park, Rocky Harbour, NL, Canada

We drove to Gros Morne National Park and are staying at Gros Morne RV Park. We will tour the area over the next two days, weather permitting. They call for rain on Monday and Tuesday. The drive was a difficult one, there were several long uphill and downhill stretches, this really is stressful because having to gear down and use the trailer brakes and the truck / trailer brakes. The scenery was beautiful, we went by a ski resort that is only 700 feet above sea level. We ran into some bridge / highway construction. Fishermen were fly fishing...
