West of Stephenville along Route 460 is Port au Port Peninsula. It is an arrow-shaped peninsula jutting out into the Gulf of St. Lawrence from Western Newfoundland. The peninsula is south of Gros Morne National Park. The community descended from French fisher folk and Acadians. As a result of this rich French heritage, the peninsula is the only part of the island that is officially bilingual. Here we want to visit Our Lady of Mercy Church and Museum in Port au Port West. Aug 7, 2007 - Eastport and Salvage, Nfld.

Tuesday we continued as short way to the sandy beaches of Eastport. The water was painfully cold, probably around 10 degrees C. but the beach was clean and fun. Then we drove out to the village of Salvage where we hiked to a lookout and watch a schooner cruise by. That evening as it got dark we spotted what looked like a boondocking opportunity on a stone and gravel beach head. It was a simple but gorgeous spot that turned out to be a new municipal campground.
