Aug 25, 2019 - Ferry, Granite Trail, Codroy Valley

We traveled to Newfoundland via Ferry yesterday. It was a 7 hour crossing in very high seas. The Ferry was huge, very comfortable and safe. Seas were about 12 feet but with this size of ship you barely noticed. Today we drove down the Canadian National Highway once again. Through the lower part of the Long Range Mountains and then east on the southern shore of the island. This section is called the Granite Coastal Drive. It is properly named as there is absolutely nothing there except granite. Lots of little fishing ports and at the end of...

Jun 19, 2019 - Norris Point/Gros Morne to Codroy Campground, Doyle's, NL

Wednesday, June 19 Copied this from Parks Canada website.  This is where our KOA is. Very pretty. "Soaring fjords and moody mountains tower above a diverse panorama of beaches and bogs, forests and barren cliffs. Shaped by colliding continents and grinding glaciers, Gros Morne’s ancient landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander coastal pathways and beachcomb among sea stacks. Cruise the dramatic, sheer-walled gorge of Western Brook Pond. Spot moose and caribou. Hike to alpine highlands where Arctic hare and ptarmigan thrive on...

Jun 16, 2019 - North Sydney Ferry to Newfoundland

Sunday, June 16 We boarded the 7 hour ferry from North Sydney, NS  to Channel-Port aux Basque, Newfoundland around 11 am and left at 11:45. It was around 60 degrees. There were comfortable stuffed chairs around small tables for sitting.  You could also pay for a lounger or rent a cabin. It seems like that would be more appropriate for those sailing on the 11:45 pm boat or the truck drivers, but I think people did rent them.  There was a tv, but we didn't watch it. We enjoyed talking a lot of the time with Jerry and Janice, our campground...

Jul 2, 2018 - Back to Codroy Valley

Mon., July 2nd – It was a beautiful day for traveling back down the one and only very long road on the western coast of Newfoundland to Codroy Valley. We stopped for lunch at the Arches Provincial Park…such neat rock formations on the coast. When we arrived at Codroy RV Park, the owner asked if anyone was interested in going on a $60 cod fishing trip….so, even after 400+ miles of pulling the trailer along the bumps and potholes, Steve couldn’t turn down the offer. I fed him a couple of cod fish cakes I picked up at the RV office (a good...

Aug 26, 2017 - Codroy Valley

The day has been cooler, windy and now a bit of rain....again! But I found the best wifi zone where I am sheltered and the Screech flavoured coffee tastes so good! We are in the Codroy Valley on Routes 406 and 407 which is called the Wetlands's Scenic Route. So we drove up the 406 to the end which is where the Cape Anguilla Lighthouse stands. The waves were coming in from the Gulf of St. Lawerence as we talked to a few couples that were braving the wind as well. Let me tell you there are no chain stores, not even a Tim's, anywhere to be...

65 is good!

Aug 25, 2017 - Newfoundland

Another bad couple of days for wifi so this may be a short entry and only a few pictures. Yesterday after it poured all night Mel got soaked - if you are keeping track this is not the first time- and I am sure it wouldn't be the last. However, you know Mel is not a morning guy so add too early to getting wet and an unhappy start to the day. We were at the North Sydney ferry crossing by 8:45 am. Oh well the ferry ride was dry - inside- and it was not raining as we entered Port aux Basques so I did get a few pictures. By the time we departed...

Jul 20, 2017 - Grand Codroy RV Camping (7/20 - 7/21/17)

We arrived at this park and were decidedly sorry that we only had two nights to stay there. It was such a beautiful park, it is one of our top 5 for the time we have been RVing. That is saying something because we have seen some really beautiful places. We could only stay 2 nights because we were already scheduled on the ferry taking us back to Nova Scotia on Saturday. There is a craft store right by the office. It is painted like the colorful houses around Newfoundland. We were in site #1. This park is only about 15 minutes from the ferry...

Aug 2, 2015 - Codroy Valley

Even though it was an overcast day we had a nice drive across eastern Newfoundland back to Doyles and Grand Codroy Valley RV Resort. The rolling landscape and variety of shades of green make this island a real pleasure to traverse. We arrived at about 4:00 yesterday, set up, had a mediocre dinner at Joe’s Country Café and attended mass at a church on highway 407 that we never quite determined the name of. But in the middle of that, as we were wandering around on highway 107 we discovered a great little hobby farm situated on a beautiful...

Jun 23, 2015 - Newfoundland

The weather yesterday was as advertised with an all-day rain and significant winds. But this morning was much calmer with sunshine. So we packed up the Phaeton and headed for the ferry arriving about an hour and a half ahead of departure. To our surprise that put us at the back of the line waiting to drive onto the ferry. We had a reservation so we were still in good shape. There were many commercial trucks that boarded the ferry and it was a half-hour after scheduled departure before we left the dock. To our surprise the ferry went out...

Jul 11, 2014 - Doyles, NS Day 2

Today we arose to beautiful sunshine around 7:30. We boarded the bus at 9:00 for a trip around the Codroy Valley and the coastal region. The fog was appearing over the mountains as we boarded so we were sure our day was probably going to get gloomy. Our tour guide was Alice who is the owner of the Park and has lived in the valley all of her life. We left the park and stopped a short distance away to visit the Wildlife Interpretive Center. Students from the area volunteer to man the center. There were many stuffed birds and other species...

Jul 10, 2014 - Doyles, NS Day 1

We arrived at Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland at around 9:15 to a very thick fog. It was not a very restful night. There were many snorers in the crowd at various levels of tone. Bill and Margaret had seats directly in front of the window facing the back of the ferry. Brad and Linda a couple of rows back. Unloading was fast. Bachman's were the third ones off. We headed to the Grand Codroy RV Park arriving at about 10:15. It was only 28 miles from the ferry and the weather was warm and beautiful. Sunny and the temp about 75 to 80 degrees....

Aug 17, 2013 - Doyle, Newfoundland

We left Deer Lake around noon to drive to Doyle, Newfoundland and the Grand Codroy RV Park. We arrived to find that there is another caravan in the park and all of the sites with a sewer connection are taken. This the second time on this caravan this has happened and not only we angry so are a number of the other caravaners. We are here for two nights and then we board the ferry on Monday for Nova Scotia and the town of Louisbourgh for two nights. The internet service at Grand Conroy is terrible and so we drove 14 miles to the Tim Horrton's...
