Read and rate Travel Journal Entries for Miscou Island, New Brunswick, Canada

Aug 11, 2014 - The Acadian Isles

It was quite cool overnight and a chilly 63 degrees inside this morning. (The fireplace took care of that.) At a bank, we changed some currency; the rate was down to $1.06. We drove up the islands, passing through Shippagan, Lameque (countless fishing boats), had lunch at the Central Cafe, and reached Miscou Island. We stopped at the peat bog interpretive walk. (90% of NB is peat, which is very acidic and hosts unique plants.) Peat is a huge industry and regulations have been put in place to restore the peat as it is used. We went on to the...

Aug 24, 2009 - Ile Miscou and Shippagan, New Brunswick

ILE MISCOU AND SHIPPAGAN, NEW BRUNSWICK CANADA August 24, 2009 After we left the Arcadian Village in Caraquet I suggested to Len that we drive north to Ile Miscou (Miscou Island) and see the lighthouse that was built in 1856. Looking at the map, it didn’t seem all that far – maybe an hour away at most and it was only about 3:00. We decided that we’d drive from Caraquet, through Shippagan, cross the bridge to Lameque (small villages) then drive across another bridge to Ile Miscou. Simple…right? We’d get there, see the lighthouse, snap a few...

Aug 4, 2009 - Treasure Island

We head down to the recomended beach. Here there is a much bigger car park and a boardwalk over the dunes to the beach. It is not very busy but there is a slight wind blowing up the beach. Dragging a large driftwood tree stump acros the beach we can shelter from the wind and enjoy the suns heat. Alex and Flynn dig holes in the beach. After a couple of hours basking we drive up to Miscou Lighthouse. We were going to explore the beach here but there are so many large flies that we decide to move some where else. Before we leave we stop at the...

Aug 3, 2009 - Fire Engines, Ambulances and Police cars.

After stocking up on food/beer we cross the causeway to Lameque and then across a highbacked bridge onto the island of Miscou. Here we see men laying wires across the bridge. Not sure what they are doing. We drive up to where the campsite is but continue past it to see how far the beach is from it. As we are driving down this little road I am supprised to hear sirens behind us. Not speeding (I checked) I pull over to let the police car past. As we drive into the beach car park we then hear more sirens aproaching. Having parked up, I go and...

Jul 22, 2005 - Perce'...the hole in the wall

Passing our northern most point on the loop, we saw the last mountain of the Appalachian chain at Grande Vallee. It was here that we began injecting a southerly component to the course. Our travels to date have brought us 1560 Nm in the six weeks since leaving Baltimore. The stops have been generally the ones that we had planned, using the Down East Cruising Guide. Weather has been wonderful as we left behind the hot, humidity of the Chesapeake and found the breezy days and cooler evenings of the Canadian Maritimes. There have been a few...
