July 26, 2006 Ft. St. James, British Columbia We headed out this morning to tour Fort St. James. It is 36 miles north of Vanderhoof and is currently both a First Nations and a white settlement. . Part of the Carrier or Dakelh people of the Nak'azkli nation made their home in this area long before any white man set foot in the area. Simon Fraser and Alexander Mackenzie were the first to trap and explore the area and in 1806 Fraser established a trading post here, Stuart Lake Outpost.
