Oct 20, 2019 - Last blog - Reflections on our journey.

When I travel, I find it is important to spend time reflecting on my journey and what I learned and experienced. So here are some of my thoughts and reflections I would like to share with you. Terrorism and Security - At all historic sites in both Paris and Italy, there was a heavy police and military presence. These were armed men who strolled among the crowds. This is part of the EU’s security compliance requirements. At all sights we had to go through security screening similar to our airports. On the one hand, it was reassuring to see....

May 6, 2019 - Kelowna

May 6, 2019 Hiawatha RV is really well-located on Lakeshore Drive, 7km from downtown. Across the street are lovely mansions sitting on the lake with lakeside parks and beach interspersed accessible by walkway. Within ¼ mile is the trailhead for Mission Creek multi-purpose trail that runs for miles. Also, there are good roads that allow you to avoid downtown when going north to the Lake Country. Kelwona has a very large footprint extending at least 10km. The main route around the lake, Hwy 97, has every big box store you can imagine...

May 5, 2019 - Winthrop, WA to Kelowna, BC

May 5, 2019 Before dinner we chatted with Joelynn, Delta flight attendant from Bothel, WA. She and her husband had rented the biggest Airstream we had ever seen. Was very roomy but I didn’t think they layout made the best use of space. Very sociable. I got up at 5:15 to do laundry and shower because the facilities were very good. I was greeted by 5 deer who wondered why “in Sam Hill” (of Mary Hill) I was up so early! Joelynn came over to say she was going into Trisp to pick up some cinnamon twisps and would give us some. We had hoped to...

Aug 28, 2018 - Kelowna, British Columbia

August 26th As we leave Nelson we are back on hwy 3 back along the very same route we took east almost 4 months ago. We are heading back for a short visit with Lindsay and Ben in Kelowna to catch up on their lives. It really feels like we are already home as this is turf we have driven several times and home is just one day’s drive away if we were to push it. We pass through towns that had significant flooding back in May, Christina Lake, Grand Forks and points along the way. It is incredibly smoky as we pass through; flooding and fires are...

May 11, 2018 - Victoria to Manning Park and on to Kelowna

Day 1 and 2 We decided that an appropriate start to our journey should be Mile “0” on the Trans Canada hwy at the foot of Douglas St in Victoria; then a dip of our toes into the Salish Sea (Pacific waters) at Island View Beach for the classic touristy start to a trip that spans ocean to ocean. As we head off the island in a mad rush we realize that we have forgotten some key items (sitting at home on the dresser)! What is a trip without forgetting something? Our first stop is not a lovely vista of the Fraser River or a lush park were we...

Sep 6, 2017 - Slow day fishing

Harvey and I were to meet Ted at the El Dorado boat launch at 8:30. After waiting until 930 Harvey and I left on our own. We later on found out that Ted was driving around Kelowna looking for the boat launch. I had told him where to go yesterday but obviously he got confused and arrive shortly after we had left. The water and temperature was perfect but there was definitely a lot of smoke preventing the sun from poking through. Even with the smoke, the temperature was wonderful and the conditions on the Lake were perfect. However the boat...

A day in the life

Aug 17, 2017 - Kelowna

Kelowna It is about a four and a half hour drive from Vancouver to Kelowna. I bought a SIM card for my iPad and we use it for navigation and for finding cafes on the road. British Columbia is having a very bad fire season and there was a lot of smoke hanging in the air as we approached Kelowna. I did look up the official fire website while we were having lunch but none of the many fires were at all close. Kelowna has a huge natural lake and is in the Okanagan a very fertile valley. Many orchards and wineries. About 260 wineries! We took a...

Nov 11, 2016 - Final Update from Kelowna Nov. 1 – 11

Our stay at Holiday Park is fast coming to an end. We have decided to leave a few days early and head south. When we originally checked into the park we had checked in for a full month planning to leave Nov. 16 but now looking at the long range forecast it looks like the weather and the temperatures will be taking a turn for the worse and we should get while the getting’s good. We will now be leaving on Sunday Nov. 13th. The weather has been quite good with temperatures averaging between 10 to 17 degrees Celsius each day. This has allowed...

Oct 31, 2016 - Update From Holiday Park Kelowna

The move to Holiday Park in Kelowna went smoothly until we tried to park in our new site. We departed Lumby without a problem, the drive to Kelowna was excellent as it was a Sunday and very little traffic was on the road. We arrived at Holiday Park RV Resort around noon. When we had first visited the park and again when we were in at the office the staff advised us that we had to proceed all the way to the end of the road, make a U turn and then come back to Fun Cres, the road our site was on and back down that road to our site because the...

Sep 3, 2016 - Kelowna

Aug 24th to Aug 29th We had a great family visit while in Kelowna. Once we got Morris back in driving shape we moved to an RV Park close enough to Lindsay and Ben's apartment that we could walk back and forth. We did a short hike up Knox Mountain which is across Okanagan Lake from Bear Creek campground. I have included some family photos from evening out and the hike. For those of you who don't already know our next trip will probably be pushed back a bit as we now have a wedding to plan for Lindsay and Ben for 2017! One more entry to come!

Jul 13, 2016 - West Eagle Campground

We went to the "Two Eagles Golf Course" with John's sister last night for supper. What a gorgeous golf course. We ate outdoors on the patio and thoroughly enjoyed the food and scenery. Today we went to the "Mission Hill Family Estates Winery" for a tour and tasting. We are not wine connoisseurs by any means but this was a first class establishment. The tour was informative, the tasting enjoyable and the retail store, expensive. Tomorrow will be more sight seeing and touring the area.

Jul 12, 2016 - West Eagle Campground

We left Clearwater about 9:00 am headed for Westbank or more commonly called West Kelowna. Hwy 97 south was a very nice drive. For the most part. Everything that goes uphill must come down at some point. I wish I knew what some of the elevations were. The constant uphill climb got crazy after awhile. One decent varied between 6 & 7% for 19 kms! Still, lots of scenery and NO rain. It seemed the further south we got, the dryer the landscape looked. The temperature sure came up as well. We're now parked at West Eagle Campground for 3 nights...
