May 24, 2019 - Hell's Gate

Hell's Gate is located in Graser Canyon. In 1808, explorer Simon Fraser described this section of the river as a place "where no human being should ever venture, for surely we have encountered the gates of hell." Each year, millions of salmon battle insurmountable odds on their upriver journey to spawn and die at their various spawning grounds. One of those overwhelming odds is Hell's Gate. Blasting during the construction of the Canadian National Railway in 1913 resulted in a landslide that wiped out millions of salmon and seemed to...

May 24, 2019 - Hope, BC

Our trip to Hope, BC was really fun. It's a small town but there are amazing things to do. Very scenic. In 1981, Sylvester Stallone and his film crew took over Hope to film Ramboo: First Blood and introduced Hollywood to British Columbia. We had a great time and would revisit in a heart beat. In fact, we will in August!!

May 22, 2019 - Canada at last

Today’s trip was 1 hour 45 minutes, to go 78.1 miles. Crossing into British Columbia, Canada. We drove through raspberry farmland eastbound and then north to Sumas. Having done this twice before we tutored everyone on what not to do or say. We had called and looked on the website to make sure we were not bringing in restricted produce or meats ahead of time. The border guard barely asked any questions. Where were we going, did we have guns, how long were we going to be in Canada. The crossing was easy-peasy. I was surprised they asked...

Sep 29, 2018 - Boston Bar to Hope

Sometimes, no matter how much you plan, things just don’t work out. I stopped at Hell’s Gate which is only a short distance from where I was staying but decided not to go on the Air Tram because it was expensive & I didn’t want to spend a long time there. Hell’s Gate is the narrowest part of the Fraser River, just 33 metres wide & they say that the volume of water going through is twice the volume of Niagara Falls which I find very hard to believe. Maybe when the river’s in flood but the bloke at the campground said that it’s very low...

Canada 2018

Sep 11, 2018 - "On the road again, just can't wait to get on the road again, ..."

Alberta showed us more wildlife than BC, but who is counting? A long trip today, enroute to airport, with one overnight stop. Beautiful scenery, and finally stopped at a quirky little town called Hope. Had a lovely dinner and struck up a conversation with some locals. Lovely evening.

Aug 25, 2017 - Went from Hell to Heaven

The next leg of our journey took us up the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Kamloops. Kamloops was horrible. So much smoke. Good thing it was just a quick stop over. We left the RV in Kamloops and drove to Salmom Arm to visit our friends the Peel's. Had a great visit. Salmon Arm is a beautiful area. The lake is huge, at least compared to what we see in the western states. Went from Hell to heaven. As I have said many times "I love waterfalls". Our next stop was Wells Gray Provincial Park. This park is about 30 miles down a small road out of...

Aug 22, 2017 - Hope BC and the Fraser Valley

After spending two days in Washington restocking the RV and doing laundry, we cranked her up and drove across the border. We passed field after field of berries: raspberries, blueberries, and black berries. Yum, yum!. All these freshly picked berries being sold at farm stands with no room for an RV plus tow car. That was a real bummer. Our first stop was at Hope. Hope is surrounded by the towering Cascade mountains and more lush rain forests. It sits at the confluence of the Fraser and Coquihalla rivers. It is also known as the town where...

May 27, 2017 - And they're off

Well after another evening of goodbyes, a few wobbly pops, pixs, laughs and hugs we actually slept in this morning. Had a little later start than planned but plans are made to be changed eh. Off to Duke point for the proverbial last ferry ride and the shock of seeing the fee, yikes. I've added a few pixs for your enjoyment of some of our last moments of island life. We took the Twassen boat and glad we did. It was a real treat not having to drive thru the city for sure. The Mann bridge looked sharp as we passed below it nd no toll HA. Randi...

Jun 14, 2013 - Fort Langley (BC) to Hope (BC)

It rained steadily overnight (despite the local forecast), so we had to take down our tents and store them wet. We then headed off in groups. I rode with Harry and John. The day's route from Fort Langley to Hope took us along the Fraser River Valley. It was generally flat, except for one major 15-20% climb 0.5 km long near the start of the day. We travelled on Highway 7 for most of the way, which was busy but had a good wide shoulder. It rained steadily in the morning, but the weather improved as we got closer to Hope. The bicycles...

Saturday, August 18, 2012 Hope, British Columbia – population 6,815 Hello again! Scott, Little Bear and I are at Wild Rose Campground and RV Park, our last stop in Canada! I drove the rig for 90 minutes today and I’m not sure Scott gets much rest when I drive as he’s busy coaching me on the techniques involved in driving a 50 foot long rig. It will be a lengthy learning curve for me as I consider my pulling a success when I get the rig from point A to point B intact with most of the furniture in place. After arriving at the RV park we went...

Jun 23, 2012 - Hope

Hope In the getting to know other riders from the previous night I came up against another tam wearer. He called them skull caps. We he saw me wearing mine his eyes lit up. When I told him I made mine he was really impressed. We bonded. I was really impressed with Bob because he was doing this ride at the age of seventy six. The previous day I ended up with a group of riders whose pace was above mine. I told Bob O, that we would ride together and go at a relaxed pace. We set off together. We didn’t get too far when we spotted a Safeway...

Jun 20, 2012 - June 20 - Prince George, BC. to Hope, BC.

Wednesday June 20 was a road to hell: We drove 390 miles from Prince George to Hope, BC today. The first 300 plus miles were easy traveling at 60 miles per hour. Then we hit the canyon between the Cascade mountains and the Pacific Coast mountains. It was curve after curve at anywhere from 35 mph to 80 mph with up and down mountains traveling from valley to valley down shifting down to 3rd and 2nd gear and shifting back up through 3rd and 4th gear. Then we arrived at Hells Gate. Hells Gate is a narrrow passage of the Fraser river through...
