Since we are travelling close to home, and we both have spent a fair amount of time in Victoria, we don't dip down into the city. Instead, we duck over to Highway 1A, and explore some new territory, lollygagging our way along the Saanich Peninsula, through beautiful rolling farmland, past charming old homes and a couple of interesting shopping areas, with a few peek-a-boo views of the ocean. Dec 19, 2009 - Goldstream Provincial Park

Heading north from the campground we headed for Goldstream Provincial Park. Here we found an ancient forest of Douglas Firs and Western Red Cedar. Our first walk was to the Nature Centre and the viewing platform overlooking the Saanich Inlet. The walk along the stream was a little smelly as there was many dead and decaying salmon. The salmon spawn here until early December. At the viewing platform we watched blue herons and bald eagles. At one point we counted over 25 bald eagles.
