May 1, 2017 - Castlegar to Cranbrook

All the roads in this region are scenic but today I chose to take a longer, super-scenic route following the Kootenay River from Castlegar where it meets the mighty Columbia River, through the small town of Nelson then on a car ferry (free) across Lake Kootenay. The ferry took 35 minutes to get across the lake, then I had another beautiful drive down the east side of Lake Kootenay. This road had a 60 kph speed limit & I had it pretty much to myself all the way to Creston where I picked up the Crowsnest Highway again so I could just take my...

Jul 12, 2016 - Cranbrook, British Columbia

I woke up around 0730 in the morning and by 0900 we were rolling out of the park. We had a very enjoyable stay at the Beaver Dam Golf & RV Resort and we enjoyed the people we met there. The owners were very friendly and very flexible. If we return to Calgary someday in the future we will very likely stay at this facility. We would recommend this campground to anyone visiting the area. The sky was clear when we left the campground and we were taking the same track we took coming until we reached the turn-off for Cranbrook in British...

May 30, 2016 - Day 8 Cranbrook, BC

Today was a beautiful sunny travel day to Cranbrook, BC. We saw beautiful snow capped mountains and lush Pine and Cedar trees along both sides of the Highway almost the entire way. Several Lakes with Blue, Blue waters. We crossed the Border with no problems and the Boder Guard was very courteous and a Cutie as well. We saw Horses and Live stock but no wild anamals. We are staying the night in a small RV campground called Baker Mountain Campground. We had lunch at Tim Hortons and it was delicious. Looking forward to tomorrow headed to Banff,...

Apr 17, 2015 - Canada Here We Come

Looking at the map it seemed that we were soon getting close to crossing back into Canada. One problem, we had too much alcohol still with us. The solution was simple... This morning waking up was a tad bit harder than most and looking at more than 5 hours of driving... hmmm this would be a test. Once on the road, the scenery started off with rolling hills covered in grasses and scrub. We could see for miles to the horizon... and so on it went for a couple of hours. Just before we drove through Spokane and turned north at Coeur d'Alene we...

Sep 26, 2014 - Day 48 - Cranbrook

Took a walk around the campground after breakfast. There is a trail along the St. Mary River which is quite nice. After lunch we drove back into Cranbrook - got some needed BC travel info, then went to the Canadian Museum of Train Travel and toured their collection of antique restored rail cars dating back to the late 1890's . Passenger train travel in those days was certainly a lot more luxurious than it is today. The cars that have been restored are very impressive. They even have one called the "Omemee"...not sure how they got that name....

Jun 19, 2013 - Small Town Events

Art and I grew up in large cities and it was only when we started RVing that we were exposed to small town events. We intended to stay in Cranbrook for only two day to restock our food supply but extended for an extra two days. This small city of 10,000 was having one of its bigger events to kick off the summer season – Sam Steele Days – in honor of a legendary Canadian soldier and police officer in the Canadian Rockies. We enjoyed watching the parade featuring local businesses including a team of Clydesdale horses, listening to music by...

May 28, 2013 - O Canada!

It was a rainy day for our drive into Canada today. No problem with the roads but the clouds covered a lot of the mountains so our views were curtailed. We had no problems at the border - gave them our passports & answered their questions. They didn't even ask if we had any pets. We were out of there in under 10 minutes. We're spending the night in the Mt Baker RV Park in Cranbrook, BC. It's a Good Sam Park & is a nice little park. We went downtown to exchange some money into Canadian currency for our trips thru Canada & fueled up while we...

Oct 27, 2011 - Train Ride To Lhasa

I am in Lhasa now. The train ride was long ( 46hrs ). Happy to be able to get a bed now and to take a shower. First day on the train was not the best ride, we kept stopping in big cities as we moved away from Beijing. Today the views were magnificent, just what I expected you can see it on the pictures. Went out for dinner for real Tibetan food, eat Yak and had also Yak butter tea. The food was tasty and the tea was almost like a cream soup taste like. Internet is controlled in China and there are many topics I can not talk about so I will...

Oct 23, 2011 - Beijing

Today I spent most of the morning walking around. It was raining but decided to walk anyway.Visited Lama Temple. Yonghe Lama Temple was originally used as the official residence for court eunuchs of the Ming dynasty. It was converted to the royal court of Prince Yongzheng during the Qing dynasty, in the 33rd year (1693) of Emperor Kangxi's reign. In the 3rd year of Yongzheng's reign (1725), it was elevated to imperial palace for short stays away from the capital, and its name was changed to Palace of Eternal Peace (Yonghegong). During the...

Oct 22, 2011 - Arrival in Beijing

Finally, here I am in Beijing. Its Saturday, October 22 7pm local time. Just arrive to my hotel, its nice and clean. I always forget how small the beds are in Asia, still trying to make up my mind which part of my body will get the bed....my upper or lower body??? There is not much for me tonight, I will go out and find a store to buy some water and snacks and probably watch TV for an hour to catch up on my language skills. All I have so far is hello and thank you. Tomorrow I will go out and explore and take some pictures and post them for...

Jul 13, 2010 - Over hill and not much dale

We got up about 6am today and decided we should get our bag of 'bathroom stuff' from the trailer. I mentioned that I locked the door last night. Well, since we don't have a key, the only way we have of unlocking it is to raise the roof high enough to get a hand in and flip the latch. But the crank isn't in its compartment! We find the crank still in place at the back of the trailer, still attached to the shaft. But what is missing is the pin that goes in the shaft to allow the crank to actually make it turn. It appears to have dropped out...
