Jun 12, 2016 - Crow & Gate Pub

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD Just as we were winding up our yoga retreat on Saltspring Island a week earlier, I happened to mention that we were heading north to explore Vancouver Island to one of our senior yoga teachers. Almost immediately, she asked if we’d be interested in seeing a traditional-style English pub along the way. She told us about the Crow & Gate Pub and gave us a general description about where it’s located. It sounded like a terrific place to have lunch on our way home from Courtney. Thank goodness for Google Maps and GPS...

Jun 6, 2016 - Mount Brenton Golf Course

@@@@@@@ KAPOORS ON THE ROAD After arriving on the ferry from Saltspring Island, we decided to walk into the lovely town of Chemanius to have dinner. We have visited several times in the past and explored the dozens of murals depicting the history of the town – murals that have made Chemanius famous and a very popular tourist destination on Vancouver Island. It was a surprisingly short walk along the old highway, one now almost devoid of traffic on a Sunday summer evening. We chose to have dinner at the Odika Restaurant as it billed itself...

Sep 8, 2009 - Midway down the Island

Hi all my armchair travellers! Here we are in the mural town--lovely sunny day, sitting in an outdoor cafe checking emails and catching up on the news. Yesterday, after a nice lazy morning in Port Hardy, we headed down the Island through even more wilds and wilderness. Gawd, there is a lot of wild land still in this part of the world. We stopped at Painter's Lodge, where we thought we might stay, but it was still early. We did wander the dock there, seeing a fresh-caught 35 lb salmon (Tyee)that was massive and apparently a fish that size is...

Jul 30, 2009 - Back across the Island

Today we packed up and left paradise for the East side of the Island. Wow is it warm today with Temps in the Mid to High 30's everywhere on the East coast of Vancouver Island. We packed up slowly and hit the road for our 3 1/2 hour drive to Chemainus. We picked our rest stop here as this was the home of Grandma and Grandpa Denney's restaurant that they operated several years ago. We drove to our landing point and set up, relaxed for a bit then headed into town. Here we tried to tour around checking out the famous Chemainus Murals and the...

Aug 19, 2008 - Country Maples in Chemainus

On August 12 we arrived at Country Maples in Chemainus and got settled. The weather is beautiful and hot. Country Maples is part of the Resort chain that we are members of - Holiday Trails. It's nestled in the forest, far enough off the road so you don't hear any cars. It's a little dusty and the sites are a bit narrow but it's nice. Larry had spotted a company in Nanoose Bay that manufactures cottages so on Thursday we headed up there. On the way back we stopped at Parksville to see if Larry's brother, Glenn, was at his RV. Turned out he...

Oct 20, 2006 - Chemainus, Vancouver Island, BC

The only way back to the east coast was via the winding highway 4 again, a road that tests car sickness sufferers to the fullest. We saw more than one impromtu stop along the way! Decided not to drive all the way to Victoria and we'd missed the ferry anyway so we stopped in Chemainus for the night. The town turned itself into a tourist attraction after the sawmill closed in 1982 by commissioning artists to paint murals illustrating the town's logging history.
