May 14, 2013 - Crossed into Canada
The V-8 engine was not sufficient; it struggled. Slowly we climbed hills, racing down so we could get over the next hill. Forget about using the cruise control. In Great Falls, MT we stopped at Wheat Montana Bakery, 116 8th St S., for bread and goodies. Lunched at Good Eats Coca-Cola Cafe, 801 2nd Ave N, opens at 11:am, chili is available to go for $7 a quart or $20 a gallon. Be sure to pick up any supplies you may need, once you cross the border the price goes Up on everything. Topped off the gas tank several times before crossing into...

Apr 30, 2007 - Fort MacLeod
Fort MacLeod is a quaint old town on the plains of Alberta, Canada. It's also very near the famous Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. The buffalo jump is the site where Plains Indians have herded buffalo over the cliff for more than 6700 years and possibly for as long as 10,000 years. They didn't just herd them; the Indians had to skillfully direct the herd in such a way that the animals were channeled into a gradually narrowing path which led to the cliff. For most of this history the Indians didn't' have horses. After the buffalo were herded...

Crossing the border into Alberta, Canada took longer than we were expecting. It didn't help that the idiot American in front of us with his Canadian girlfriend was trying to cross with no passport (no suprise there as most Americans don't own a passport) and a suspended drivers licence. They let him through after he assured them his girlfriend was driving, sure enough ten minutes later he's in the drivers seat when they pass us at 100 mph. On our way to the Rockies we stopped at an internet cafe in Fort McLeod. Trying to update this journal...

Besides our passports we had to show "K's" birth certificate to verify she is our daughter. I'm so glad I brought everything with us because "J" only had a copy. They asked the typical questions (bringing in alcohol, tobacco, have you been convicted of a felony, etc.) but I was surprised they didn't ask us about fruits and vegetables. We waiting a short while and were sent on our way. I'm happy I got to keep all the fruits and veggies as I plan on cooking and snacking "in-doors" as we go through Canada. Becuase of the crazy prices for gas...

Jul 25, 2006 - Macleod Canada
Macleod Canada, July 25th, 2006 We're on our way to Glacier National Park and in order to break up the long trip decided to stay in a place called Macleod. Macleod's claim to fame is that it served as the first headquarters of the North West Mounted Police from 1876 - 1878. It's a real small town desperately trying to draw in more residence for survival. They must be making some progress since the historic downtown area, approximately half a block long, is getting a face lift. However there's not much to do there. We toured Fort Macleod...

Jun 12, 2006 - Ft. McLeod, Alberta, Canada
Rain, rain, go away. Raining for the fourth day in a row. So gray that you couldn't see any mountains. We drove from St. Mary into Canada at last. Last night, I peeled all of the apples, made a pie/tart, baked all the potatos and chopped all of the onions and froze them because we were told they would take all fresh fruit and veggies at the border. Didn't quite finish the grapes and didn't get rid of the lemons/limes either - but when we got to the border, they didn't even ask us if we had fresh fruits and vegetables. Bob had to go inside...
