May 25, 2017 - First Day

I should backtrack. Our first full day in Calgary involved the Telus Spark Centre and other “sight-seeing” with the cohort. On Monday, we attended a group session led by the Calgary Regional Consortium. This session provided a quick, but in-depth, overview to the Calgary Public Schools system. However, I was unfamiliar with a lot of the jargon they used, and I had to keep reminding myself that I was not in Mississippi and Calgarians do not have to worry about standardized testing and the negative implications towards teachers. In Canada,...

May 25, 2017 - RTHS part 2

May 18, 2017 We woke up early to start our second day at Robert Thirsk. I was excited about going back for a second time, because I felt like all of my questions were still unanswered. How do you deal with discipline? How do you grade assignments equally if you allow students to pick and choose the level of difficulty? Where is the line between student and teacher drawn during Connect, if your students are meant to be so open with you? How do you fund schools if there is no provincial sales tax? To me, it never seemed to make sense. But...

May 25, 2017 - Day 7

I wanted to sleep in. No shame. It had been a long week, and the day before had been even longer. So I wanted to sleep a good part of the day away. Sadly, my wants didn't come to fruition. Instead, I got up for brunch around 11 am, enjoying an excellent meal of french toast and mimosas with several of the girls in the program. The place was nearly empty, so we enjoyed ourselves why we could. While there, I noticed how the servers spoke to us. I would say I had excellent service the entire week, but I never thought about what they said that...

May 24, 2017 - Reflection

Canada was an awesome experience. Although I am glad to be home, I will always carry with me the lessons and sights of this trip. I did so many things that I never thought I would do, all thanks to this scholarship. I ate the best meal of my life at the Keg, saw the most beautiful sight of my life at Lake Louise, and learned of various stances on education that will help me grow as a teacher. I also formed closer bonds with many of the other future teachers in the program. I may have come home, but part of my heart and mind will always be...

May 22, 2017 - Calgary, Canada Reflection

I learned a lot throughout this trip to Calgary, Canada. Coming here was a once in a lifetime experience, and I will always be grateful for Mississippi State and the Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program for making this trip possible. I learned a great deal during this visit to Canada, and I hope that I can use the tools that I have been given while on this trip to become a very effective teacher in the classroom. I believe that all of the schools had great qualities that could help our schools in Mississippi perform at a higher level....

May 21, 2017 - I'm coming home!

TODAY WE GO HOME!! The night before I got all packed up and set my alarm for 8:30. I must have been so excited to go home that I woke up a whole hour earlier than I was set to and got up to shower. Then, I finished up any last minute suitcase stuffing and checking to see I didn't leave anything, and I was ready to go! We got to the airport and got through security and customs without any issues, and we were on our way to Mississippi! The first flight from Calgary to Houston International Airport was set to take off at 1:05pm. We all got on...

May 21, 2017 - American Skies Again

May 21, 2017 Calgary, AB/ Houston, TX/ Memphis, TN/ Starkville, MS Today was a very long day of travelling. We arrived at Calgary airport and checked in and went through security and U.S. customs. Even this was a valuable experience for me, because I had never gone through this process before this trip. I had never flown internationally at all. I am thankful that our professors prepared us ahead of time by letting us know what information we might need at the airport; it really helped calm my nerves about our flight. Soon, we were on our...

May 20, 2017 - Day 08 || Out on the Town

Our final day in Calgary was a total free day, so of course we both slept in a little late. We started the day with Tim Horton's after hearing great things about their famous coffee. I was very impressed with their speed! The food that I ordered was in front of me before I had even put my card in the reader! The coffee was extremely strong, I couldn't even finish the whole thing. We left Timmy's and went across the street to the Calgary Public Library, which had a mini fire station museum inside on the first floor! We explored each floor of...

May 20, 2017 - Exploring Calgary

May 20, 2017 Saturday Calgary This week has definitely given us a taste of what life will be like as a teacher. We have been up and ready to go almost every morning by 7 or 7:30, and on most days we haven't gotten back until around 4:00 in the afternoon. Today, however, we got to sleep late and explore the city on our own. Our day started with a late breakfast at Cora, a diner in downtown Calgary. I had a crepe; I love the fusion of English and French culture here. As you can see in the pictures I have attached, most packaging and signs...

May 20, 2017 - Last Day in Calgary

Today was our final full day in Calgary, Canada, and we were given the opportunity to explore the city a little before we return home. Some of my peers and I took the opportunity to visit parts of the city that we had not been able to go to before. We went to a diner that was about a 30 minute walk from the hotel for lunch, and we found ourselves in a part of town that looked very similar to a college town. There were quite a few apartment complexes, dog parks, and restaurants for the students to enjoy. We also went into a candy store in...

May 20, 2017 - Catching up on some Z's

Today we did not have to wake up early, so as the title suggests, I most certainly slept in. I finally woke up at around 10:15 and got ready for brunch. Myself and a small group ate at Milestones right around the corner from the hotel where I got some very good breakfast tacos. After brunch, my group and I decided to venture further from the hotel than usual to go see the Olympic Plaza, Fort Calgary, and the River Walk. Calgary, Canada hosted the Winter Olympics in 1988. In commemoration, the province of Alberta created the Olympic Plaza...

METP Canada 2017!!!

May 20, 2017 - Saturday May 20

Today was our last day in Canada, and we had our dreaded "political encounter." We went to a cool board game restaurant place, and as we were paying our tab, the guy asked us if any of us had voted for Trump. I didn't, but I kept that info to myself, as I do with everyone, but Ross did and was excited to talk about it. Luckily the guy was cool and was just curious, himself being a fan of Bernie Sanders. At night I had one of the best steaks of my life. Calgary's reputation of beef is well-earned. A great way to cap off a great, relaxed...
