Jun 21, 2017 - A Day with Mr Bun
Today was our pre arranged day with Mr Bun. He tried so hard to get us to visit every tourist attraction here in Kampot, but not wanting to spend all day, every day with Mr Bun, we selected 3 of the most popular activities in the region. Kampot Pepper, Kampot Salt and a fishing village, were our narrowed down choices, not thinking at all that these three go together nicely on a BBQ! So at our arranged time of 10am, Mr Bun was there outside our hotel, greeting us with a welcoming handshake and many 'Good morning Brother' and 'Good Morning...Jump to full entry
Jun 20, 2017 - Mr Bun and the Sunset River Cruise
Today, the plan is to explore the friendly and engaging town of Kampot, Cambodia. Actually, it is a city but with a small town feel. Hotel supplied breakfast was included in this accommodation package, so a leisurely breakfast was the order of the day and then a morning walk around town. As the morning was heating up, we decided to call our personal Tuk Tuk driver Mr Bun- who answers the phone "Hello Brother", followed by my reply, "Good Morning Mr Bun, this is Rod from the Boutique Hotel" , Mr Bun replies with-" yes, yes my friend, where...Jump to full entry
Jun 19, 2017 - The bus trip from Hell
Well, we have already managed to break one of the 10 Commandments of travelling in SE Asia- 'thou shalt NEVER travel in a mini van or bus unless it belongs to one of the Top 4 Bus companies' ! We unwittingly allowed our guest house manager in Sihankonville, to book us a trip from there, through to Kampot, which is about 2 and a 1/2 hours away. As it's low season, the larger buses are not plying this route, so a minivan is the most common transport, due to lack of passengers. We check out of our guest house and climb into the most...Jump to full entry
Jun 18, 2017 - Last day in Sihanoukville, Cambodia and another boat trip...
On the recommendations of many that we have met, we booked a speed boat trip to the Island of Koh Rong Sanloem. Our guest house owner kindly booked our trip for today, with a pickup from the front of the guest house at 10am. Shortly after the arranged time, a truck with rows of stainless steel seats arrives, we climb aboard and hold on, after a couple of other pick ups we arrive at the pier, where we are checked in for our trip. Not long after, we board our speed boat for the 1/2 hour trip and as soon as we cleared the Pier, the driver...Jump to full entry
Jun 16, 2017 - Bus Trip Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville
As part of our travel itinerary, and planning, we had originally planned to catch the train which is a recently re opened service from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville, however due to the train timetable, which would not see us arrive till late at night, we decided to catch the train on the return journey and book the bus instead. Fortunately, on the street corner just near our Hostel, there happened to be a booking office for trips, tours and all travel arrangements. We discussed with the man what we wanted and discussed the safest bus company....Jump to full entry
Jun 14, 2017 - The sad history of Cambodia.
As arranged, our faithful taxi driver was out in front of our hotel at 9am, ready for our day of sight seeing, he opened the door for us, gave us a bottle of cold water, and as he headed off, we arranged where we would go and how much it would cost. The journey was about 4.5 hours and his cost $40 USD. First stop was the Killing Fields. This is the actual site where Pol Pot murdered millions of Cambodians in a Genocide that is just impossible to believe. A guided, self paced audio tour lets you understand the atrocities that were...Jump to full entry
Jun 12, 2017 - Phone Penh Cambodia
After a very early start and very short flight to Phnom Penh Cambodia, we arrived to a nice airport, an easy Visa on Arrival system, an orderly taxi system and friendly people. I should have known this was a trick! As we headed through the city towards our hostel, the traffic was appalling, with no apparent system or rules. No problem, this is Asia and we are well versed in chaos from our trips to Thailand. Our driver is a simply lovely guy and we make a mental note to book him for a day trip during our stay. We arrive at our hostel and...Jump to full entry
Mar 19, 2017 - Wat the hell time is it?
Wat the hell time is it? March 19 2017 Siem Reap, Cambodia 4:30am. Seriously. I can download photos from the internet anytime I want to, if I want to see the sun rising over the towers of Angkor Wat. Or buy a postcard of it from any child in Cambodia- they all sell them. But Savath insisted that we had to do this and so, against my better judgment and keen instinctual belief that "sleep is good", we rose at 4:30am this morning....and were back in bed asleep by 8:30am. During the intervening 4 hours, I heard my wife regularly mumbling...Jump to full entry
Mar 18, 2017 - Savath in Cambodia – Shul hopping again
Savath in Cambodia – Shul hopping again March 18, 2017 Siem Reap, Cambodia Well, I officially broke my wife. Not literally. But enough so that last night, when we were discussing our adventures for today, she was almost giddy with delight when I asked her if, for Shabbat, she’d prefer to just sit out today’s full-day of Temple hopping and take a ‘casual day’ while I had Savath schlep me around. I’m shocked, to be honest. I’ve been reading reams of information to her the past week about the intricate details of the different temples and how...Jump to full entry
Mar 17, 2017 - Love & Needlepoint amongst the Ruins
Love & Needlepoint amongst the Ruins March 17, 2017 Siem Reap, Cambodia Well, more accurately put, it’s called ‘Cross-stitching’. So I’ve been told by she who was not content wielding knitting needles in my presence and so has now added to her arsenal of weapons a pair of little but sharper needles. The needles come with the cross-stitching kit that we picked up this afternoon at West Edmonton Siem Reap Market Mall. We have been in more markets now than I can shake a piece of used clothing at. This one is clearly where the locals shop. It...Jump to full entry
Mar 16, 2017 - Jay 7 & the Begettings
Jay 7 & the Begettings March 16, 2017 Siem Reap, Cambodia I have made the acquaintance now of each of the mosquitoes that hang out at the pool at our hotel at dusk. Each of them have left me a small ‘present’. Mostly on my legs. I’ve named them all – my favourite is “Spot”. Lizzy warned us about the small beggars (by this I mean the mosquitoes at the pool, not the children) but unfortunately, I, as usual, wasn’t listening. As a result, I have now (at last count) 17 mosquito bites on my left leg which pretty much coat the leg from the top...Jump to full entry
Mar 15, 2017 - Healing Sick Children
My daughter is always right March 15, 2017 Siem Reap, Cambodia Last night we had dinner with Stefan & Heike at a lovely restaurant called “Haven”, which serves as a training restaurant, helping underprivileged young people to be trained as chefs, servers and administrators in the restaurant business. The young people at “Haven” will do just fine as they brought us all the Angkor Beer that me & Stefan wanted – we aren’t that demanding as it turns out. The food was good, too. This was a last chance to visit with our new friends from the boat...Jump to full entry
