Dec 17, 2004 - Kratie, Cambodia

Near the town of Kratie is Kampie, a place right by the Mekong River. I took a motorcycle to this spot and then a boat to look at the Irrawaddy dolphins. They are very rare freshwater dolphins that live in only a couple of places in the world. There are only about 20 or so living in this area. They look a bit like beluga whales, because they have such a round, snub nosed face. I don't have any pictures because they are quite shy and don't come too close to boats. However, I saw quite a few swimming in pairs and surfacing to breathe not too...

Lale's Travel Log

Dec 1, 2004 - Kratie

Today I did a quick trip up the Kratie, which is on the Mekong. Kratie is a medium size city by Cambodian standards but it is surrounded by rice fields and sparse forest. The town of Kratie was not that special, however the surrounding countryside was a great relief from the congestion of Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. The main draw of Kratie is that it is one of the only places you can see the endangered Irrawaddy freshwater dolphins. At one time they thought there were about 1000 dolphins in Cambodia and Laos, however the civil war and fishing...

Nov 30, 2004 - Kratie - fresh water dolphins

Another early morning went by. We caught the fast boat to Kratie, a town which was all about fresh-water dolphins in the Mekong River. We watched the dolphins from a boat, but it was impossible to get a nice shot, so I'll leave it up to your imagination. We saw another beautiful sunset from the riverside.

Sep 27, 2004 - Crossing the Mekong to Cambodia

The border crossing was easy. We were warned of being ripped off and having to bribe each Officer but we just did a bit of scheming ourselves and we got through with only having to pay 2 dollars to Laos and 1 to Cambodia. The serious money came when we took a boat down to Stung Treng which is the first town you get to. Betty, Deb and I took a ridiculously fast speed boat down the Mekong passing half drowned trees for 35 Dollars! We have been used to paying 2-3 Dollars each! Because there is no other way though we had no choice but to pay or...

Our Big Adventure

Jul 4, 2004 - Speedboating up the Mekong (Kratie, Cambodia)

From Siem Reap we took a bus bound for Phnom Pehn. Enroute we met a group of 5 students all getting their MBAs in Singapore. They too were headed for Laos so we got off the bus a little over half way and made our way to the Lao boarder as a group of seven: 3 Portuguese, 1 Isralli, 1 Italian, and now 2 Americans. This was definately not the typical route for most backpackers. We managed to get a ride to where we wanted to go. Ry shared the front seat of the "Asia" van with the driver and a Cambodian mother who spent most of her time nursing...
