Jun 24, 2017 - The carnival is over

Today is the end of our tour. We left Budapest at 8:30 en route to Vienna. The day was fine - another 30+ day expected! Traffic was busy - school holidays have started and people were on there way to the Dalmatian coast for some beach holidays. The countryside was industrial and rural, with extensive wind farms. We stopped for a comfort break and coffee then kept on going, arriving about 12 at the Hilton. Luckily the room was already available, so we settled in then went over the road to a bakery for a light lunch. J went to pay with his...

Jun 17, 2017 - Horses in nappies

Today dawned fine with blue skies - perfect for a walk around Vienna. After showering and repacking the extraneous stuff into a sausage bag (to be left at the hotel), we went to the lobby ATM. C spied a woman reading the Insight tour notice and so got talking. She was from Melbourne, and had arrived minus her luggage! First task was to find somewhere for breakfast - an easy task you might think ( breakfast at the hotel is €32/person which is a little steep). However all was quiet in the street with no cafes open. for a Saturday. Into the...

Jun 16, 2017 - He thought there were four of them

Not a terribly early start - we planned a 9am departure from the hotel, so breakfasted about 7:45. There were numerous primary school groups staying in the hotel and entering the breakfast area like animals into the ark (2 by 2). C sniggered to herself as she picked out the naughty ones, the taking advantage of unlimited choice ones, etc…. The teachers looked flustered. C nearly had juice, baked beans, egg and milk tipped on her as they cut the corner past our table on the way from the buffet area! J was excited - the first time he had had...

This morning after breakfast we are off heading to Wien, (Vienna) Austria, again we are traveling in 3 vans, was a good trip with lots of great scenery along the way, a trip of 3 hours with a bathroom break in the middle. We get to our hotel around 1230 and was able to get checked in to our room, dropped off our bags, then off to the subway heading to old part of Wien. Dec 5, 2016 - VIENNA: Music, Coffee, Freud

Monday, Dec 5: Busy busy day! But first...big adventure last night. About 10 pm we went through one of the 27 locks between Budapest and Nuremberg and I (along with about 50 other intrepid souls) stayed on the upper outside deck to watch the process! Oh, my gosh, it was cold - frost on the railing. The good crew, however, circulated among us with shots of some clear liquor to warm us from the inside, and extra blankets were provided to throw over everyone's shoulders. A very interesting and exciting experience. This morning, too, we went...

Nov 30, 2016 - Super Schonbrunn!

We did not decide when we were getting up today. This never goes well. We did eventually become vertical and decide to leave the hotel though, around eleven thirty or so. We asked the receptionist for directions to our first stop: Schonbrunn Palace. She gave us sketchy ones through a cemetery. I was not in favor of following these directions, but the other two went jauntily that way. It was a lovely and very ostentatious cemetery, but as I thought, there was no way through. Back out to the street we went and back to following the map. It...

Nov 29, 2016 - Trapped in Vienna because I can't show my papers

It is night again and I am still in Vienna. Jet lag caught up with me last night. I woke at 3 am and rather than toss and turn I researched something that was bugging me. The tolls you are supposed to pay in each country are signified paid through a vignette, which is either a sticker or an electronic device depending on the country. The good news was that I was lucky in that I didn't get stopped in Austria where the fine is $250 in cash on the spot. The bad news is I will probably owe more than that to Alamo when the get the bill from...

Nov 28, 2016 - Great day in a Bad place

I have been to hell and I have to say it's wunderbar. I spent the first 6 hours of the day at Auschwitz. As a museum it's similar to the Tower of London. Tons to read. Plenty of exhibits. An occasional reminder that they killed one and a half million people. Germans are horrible murderers who try to make up for it by taking amazing notes. No exhibit is complete without ten documents 2 hole punched and signed off by 4 insane krauts. It snowed all day which gave a tranquil beauty to this doorway to hades. There are two camps, Aushwitz and...

Oct 17, 2016 - Day 17 and 18 Vienna, train to Zurich and Slovakia

On Saturday we drove back to Vienna. Along the way we stopped in the capital of Slovakia. This is where the government offices are and had some cute streets filled with shops and restaurants. One we reached Vienna we got ready for our farewell dinner at a restaurant in the heart of Vienna. The food was great and everyone was in a great party mood as this was our last time all together. We met many nice people from all over the world. After dinner we attend a performance at one of the opera houses and enjoyed a little opera, ballet dancing...

Oct 3, 2016 - Visiting Austria - Vienna

Few weeks ago, I had a chance to visit Austria’s biggest gem - Vienna. Now, finally, my quest to visit Linz, Graz and Vienna is complete. If you haven’t still managed to visit any of these, you just might want to after you read this text. So, let’s start with the latest, and list the reasons to visit Austria’s capital. When you first enter this city, it might look big and boring with all the skyscrapers and glass buildings at the first site, but as you dive deeper, you’ll discover beautiful remnants of the...

Sep 20, 2016 - Still In Vienna

Day 10 – Tuesday 20th September Vienna Early wake up at 5am with all sorts ticking over in our minds. First off though was for Viv to open her birthday cards which brightened her up a bit. Then it was down to serious discussion on what to do next. We decided that we would stay another day here at the Vienna site instead of moving on to Bratislava in Slovakia. We need to sit back & see if anything turns up, which doesn't seem likely, & at least calm ourselves down a bit. All the signs are that the credit & debit cards haven’t been used & are...
