Oct 3, 2017 - Swan Hill

Tuesday 3 October 2017 Up late this morning. Daylight saving is tricking us as it is still dark when we should be getting up! Spent some time on house keeping which was badly needed! We then walked up to the Pioneer Settlement and bought our tickets for the 2.30pm cruise this afternoon & the light show tonight. They offer a Devonshire tea at the Paragon Cafe. How could we resist the fresh warm scones, jam & cream served by the volunteer ladies all dressed in period dresses! A delightful bunch of very happy ladies. Back to the van to pick up...

Oct 2, 2017 - Moama to Swan Hill

Monday 2 October 2017 Not far to go today, so didn't rush and were on the road just before 9.30am. Decided to stay on the highway today as we headed to Swan Hill. Checked availability for Mildura, and there is still heavy bookings, so now we are having two nights at Swan Hill and two at Mildura. Just need to be flexible with the school holidays. Stopped at Cohuna for morning tea on the river and had the company of a couple from Sydney. They were heading right through to Mildura, and did have a booking. Very pleasant sitting on the river...

Apr 25, 2012 - Days 49 - 50 UPDATE NOTES

Hi All, After the Flinders Ranges we headed back south to take up the initial “purpose” of the trip. To be honest we really do not need an excuse to travel but I guess at least it legitimises the excuse. Our original (excuse) plan was to follow the Murray from its head waters in the Snowy Mountains to its mouth at Goolwa. The heavy rains and floods in the region 8 weeks ago meant that we could not run “down“ the river as the flooding was too extensive. We have been able to follow the flooding with information we have obtained from a...

Aug 24, 2011 - sunny Swan Hill

A lazy day in Swan Hill…. The weather was so nice today we just laid around in the sun with a brief punctuation for lunch and to buy some solar rocks (don’t ask, you will have to wait and see). Nice lunch though at the very exclusive “Swan Hill Club” where, as its Wednesday, they had porterhouse steak and chips for $10. It was not a small “pensioner” serve either. Bendigo tomorrow…. A very long drive of over 187km…

Aug 23, 2011 - Swan Hill

Here we are in wonderful Swan Hill…. Some distressing news is just to hand however regarding the staple diet of our group. I quote from the ABC: Ouyen to pass the baton on vanilla slice event!!!!!! On the 2 September this year, Ouyen will hold its last vanilla slice event. The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph has been hosted by the North West Victorian town for 14 years, but now organisers want another community to take on the task. The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph arrived in Ouyen in 'an unusual way', says the Chair of...

Dec 13, 2009 - Day 145 – Mildura to Swan Hill – The Caravan Club

The boys are now getting the hang of this holiday thing, regularly sleeping in until 7 or 8am. It creates a different problem where we are rather late to leave a van park. We lost another 30 minutes yesterday coming into the eastern states which helped even more. Lucky we do not have a reality to get back to, for a while at least. It was remiss of me not to mention a new sub species of traveler we discovered in Tanunda. The ‘Caravan Clubber’. Yes we crossed paths with the South Australian Caravan Club for a couple of days. So what does a...

Mar 30, 2008 - Swan Hill

Well I thought we were going to have a sleepless night with the party next door. The road to the house goes right past the back of our row of vans and up till about 11 pm there were cars racing up to the party. After that they stopped though and we all got a good nights sleep. We got up for our 9am pancakes which were delicious! They had maple syrup and everything! Very progressive caravan park owners with plenty of energy. After pancakes, the kids hired some pedal bikes and spent an hour on the bike track. The kids then met with all the...

Mar 20, 2005 - Swan Hill 20-24/3

Last time here we stayed at a different park - whose managers encouraged us NOT to return - they didn't know much about caravans - they what?? Stayed this time at the Riverside CP - and it really is riverside - steam whistle on a paddleboat ensures that both morning and afternoon naps are disturbed. Aside from that a very nice park. took the scooter for a 'walk' to a nearby park and met some odd characters. It is the considered opinion of both of us that Swan Hill has some of the best fish and chips we have had - recommended. Found to my...
